Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: An Early-Morning Home Invasion?

Mason Cross had already sealed off all the traffic routes. No matter how skilled the other party was, not even a fly could escape.

Yet, there was still no news.

If it was a kidnapping, why hadn't the kidnappers called?

In contrast to the restless night at the Hawthorne Family, things were quite harmonious on Laura Quincy's side, though there was a small incident before she went to bed. She had just finished applying her face mask and was getting ready for sleep when there was a knock at the door.

Opening the door, she saw young Mars holding a pillow and blinking his big, teary eyes at the doorway, his voice soft and adorable, "Sister, I'm scared."

For some reason, motherly affection surged within Laura. Maybe she thought of the fact that she grew up without a mother, and impulsively she blurted out, "Don't be afraid, sister is here."

Justin Hawthorne happily threw himself into Laura's arms, just as he imagined, with the scent of a mother...

If only sister could be his mommy...

Laura, who was used to sleeping alone, surprisingly didn't mind being held by Justin Hawthorne and strangely had a particularly sweet sleep.

The next morning.

Laura was awakened by the unusual noises outside her door. She hurried to get dressed and went out to find a group of men in black suits barging in.

She stared at them in shock. What the hell! A robbery invasion early in the morning?

Then, she saw a man and several police officers come in, uncompromisingly conducting a search. After they found Justin Hawthorne in the bedroom, the group visibly breathed a sigh of relief.

The man in the lead walked over to the bed, picked up Justin Hawthorne, and headed out. Still half-asleep, Justin Hawthorne was carried out without fully understanding the situation.

At the door, he suddenly turned and said, "Captain Linden, with conclusive evidence now, proceed according to law!"

The person called "Captain Linden" immediately nodded respectfully, "Rest assured, Assistant Cross."

Mason Cross gave Laura a meaningful look and then left with the still half-asleep Justin Hawthorne in his arms.

Laura was completely baffled, then unhappily demanded, "Who are you people? Why did you forcibly break into my house? This behavior is illegal!"

Captain Linden replied coldly, "Miss Quincy's courage is truly impressive! Daring to kidnap Mr. Hawthorne's son, come with me to the station for a statement!"

Laura looked bewildered, "Who are you accusing of kidnapping? I took that child in out of kindness! And who is Mr. Hawthorne? Do you have the wrong person?"

Captain Linden sneered, "Did Miss Quincy not do her research before the kidnapping? Playing dumb now won't help you!"

With that, the two police officers standing by handcuffed Laura's wrists and forcibly took her out. Laura just felt her mind go blank. Mr. Hawthorne? That name seemed familiar...

Suddenly, she thought of the renowned Hawthorne Family in Dravenfall, involved in the military, political, and commercial worlds. No one dared to cross them...

Could it be that Mars was actually Hawthorne?

Just as they reached downstairs, Laura saw a row of black cars parked by the roadside, each accompanied by two burly men in black.

It was just like the mafia had arrived...

Captain Linden suddenly jogged to the first car, after which the rear window slowly rolled down, but only halfway.

Due to the distance, Laura couldn't clearly see the features of the man in the car, only a vague profile.

Nor could she hear what Captain Linden was saying, only that his expression was respectful, as if reporting to some big shot...
