Wynn and Ignis had grown up together, The Typhoon clan and Flamesouls had good relations and most of her training took place in the central city of Raimei. Wynn had barely been 16 years old when she awoke her powers as a knight, to commemorate the occasion the patriarch of the Typhoon clan had commissioned the Flamesouls for a wolfram weapon to be bonded to her very soul.
Ignis himself was no slouch as he had already reached the level of fire control and forging techniques to call himself a blacksmith of the highest tier just below the level of a Soulsmith, a title only his father commanded across the continent. Ignis could well be said to be at the level of a mystic knight however he commanded no weapon as he had sworn himself to forge his own weapon when the time would come.
Most mystic knights benefitted from having a weapon since it would awaken its nascent soul and boost their main element or even allow them to wield a completely different one. It was not that Ignis neglected his training however he knew that he would learn in due time as his first devotion was to the creation of weapons not their destruction. As he was hammering away at his latest commission, Wynn sneaked into the forge. Her adept use of wind magic silenced her steps as she slowly made her way to Ignis who was completely entranced in his work.
"Hey, what are you working on?" Wynn inquired. Surprised by the sudden intrusion Ignis almost dropped his tongs before he recognized Wynn's sweet voice. "Just finishing up on this claymore for one of the thunder clan's knights, I need to be sharp before I take up forging your Spear." Among the wind users, Wynn was a particular outlier for her use of the spear but make no mistake she was every bit as fast and deadly as her brother who preferred to use twin katars.
Unable to afford Soulram, Wynn had settled for a Wolfram spear made by a senior-craftsmen however as soon as Ignis heard this he volunteered to forge her spear, his form of a birthday gift. This gesture did not go unnoticed by his father who knew of the tradition among the Flamesouls that a true craftsmen must gift their future partner with a weapon forged to the utmost of their own abilities. In fact, Ignis had hoped his father would notice, he was not intent on keeping it a secret that he was smitten by Wynn and he wanted to spend the rest of his life with her. Wynn blushed as she recalled this scene which was soon followed by Ignis confessing his feelings to her right in this very forge.
As he quenched the claymore in a vat of oil, Ignis was left with a pristine blade, the steel already showing hints of the lightning it would one day wield as its own. He quickly set aside the claymore while making a mental note to finish polishing it as well as attaching the handle and pommel. He turned to face Wynn, "I was wondering when you would drop by. I was hoping we could go shopping together for a few items needed for your spear." He could have easily gone alone but doing so would rob him of spending more time with Wynn and that was something that didn't sit right with him.
Wynn teased him as she replied, "Aww, I never pegged you as the romantic type. Don't tell me you brought me flowers as well?" Ignis instead furnished a small silver pendant inscribed with the motif of his own purple hued flame. "I suppose this should suffice for now, it is meant to be a symbol of my protection for you. I even made a matching one with the motif of a raging typhoon for myself, we can wear it as a couple's item" Now it was Wynn's turn to blush, she was overjoyed as Ignis securely fastened the pendant around her neck. She would come to cherish this particular accessory, rarely being seen without. They made their way to the bustling marketplace, enjoying a stroll through the city as the marked one item after another from their checklist.
Soon it was already evening and they decided to part ways since he would have to start the forge early tomorrow morning to have both the claymore and her spear ready. Ignis quickly settled into his bed and waited eagerly for the next morning. Ever since he was a child, he was obsessed with the forge so as soon as the first rays of sunlight shone on his tan skin he was out of bed. His body was toned from years of striking hot steel and his jet-black hair stood out on more than one occasion.
It was said that one's soul reflected the colour of their eyes and Ignis was no different, his eyes burned with the same purple flame that represented his forge and his power. After he was done clothing himself in his signature overalls and baggy pants, he quickly made his way towards the forge. The claymore he set aside yesterday was once again his primary focus as he applied the finishing touches to the blade. After he was done with that task, he picked up the dense wolfram ingot and began the process of forging it into a spear. He slowly heated up the metal, getting it bright hot as he began the process of rhythmic hammering to draw out the metal to its desired length.
This was a crucial step in ensuring a balanced feel to the weapon while not drawing it out to the point that it may shatter. Soon the spear was taking shape, he decided that the entire spear would be made from one single billet, this proved to be quite the undertaking as night was soon approaching and he had barely scratched the surface of what he had set out to accomplish. Soon a week passed as Ignis diligently worked on the spear.
With sporadic visits from Wynn as well as meals with his family Ignis made sure to not neglect his health and get the proper amount of rest each day. After another week of carefully polishing, etching and sharpening the spear it was ready. The wolfram spear had a dull shine to it along with a beautiful acid etching that ran along the length of the spear with intricate carvings along the handle.
He rushed to Wynn with the completed spear and watched as she set out on her journey as a soldier with a bittersweet feeling in his chest. He knew that as soon as she was awakened as a knight she would head off to the imperial army for her mandatory training. The only reason he was so far exempt from it was due to his father's influence as well as his role as one of the top craftsmen in the modern world. He had also known that he must take up arms sooner or later, not that he was particularly patriotic but because he may no longer have a choice with the monster attacks that were on an unprecedented rise. He could not stand idly by and watch as the world burned around him.
