Chapter 5 - A Somber Goodbye

"If you had to sacrifice a village of 1000 to save the city of 1 million residents would you do it? Knowing you would forsake the very place that raised you in favour of the greater good. Either answer is horrible and we can only hope that we are not the ones making that decision."- A debate on moralism.

After receiving Wynns last letter Ignis was in a rather good mood as he headed to the forge. Still stumped by the mystery that was the soulram he had asked his father how it was made. His father only replied that no one was privy to its secrets but the emperor and thus he was left without answer. Staring intently at the block of soulram in his workshop, Ignis began hearing a faint sound emanating from the metal.

An unnatural coldness permeated from the piece of metal as Ignis began heating it up. Entranced by the metal as if it spoke to him about its agony, he began forging a slender katana, he expertly folded the metal as he continued to hammer away. As he prepared to quench he blade a epiphany rushed over him and as soon as the katana was ready he felt as if he had finally stepped beyond the boundary that once restrained him. He requested an audience with his parents, Efernis and Meiko Flamesoul, to display his achievement as well as asking his father about the phenomenon he had experienced. Enfernis was overjoyed to hear of his sons exploits, even Meiko who was known to be as cold as ice suddenly had a smile across her face as they prepared to meet their son in the dining hall. A 20-year-old soulsmith was unprecedented, his own father had only achieved the feat at the age of 40 while he was already an Apex knight. Now it was time that Ignis would forge his own weapon and set off into the world.

He imagined the grin on Wynn's face when he would tell her the news and ask her to adventure with him. He was soon in the dining room along with the slender katana that he had dubbed "Silent Night" for its precise edge and sleek look. He bowed as his parent soon made their presence known. They exuded an Aura of power subconsciously that befitted their rank as current generation of humanity's zenith.

"Father, I would like to present this blade to you as proof of my ascension as a Soulsmith. I would like to formally put in a request to forge my own soulram weapon."

Enfernis was stunned by the formal tone of his son.

"Ignis, raise your head, after looking at this blade I am convinced that not only are we family but you are also my equal in the forge. You may one day surpass me but on that day I shall only cry tears of joy."

His mother soon embraced him while congratulating him with a kiss on his cheeks. The atmosphere was one of celebration and cheer however that changed as one of the butlers rushed into the dining room.

"What in the blazes is wrong with you Russel?" Enfernis bellowed as the butler nearly crashed into them. The butler steadied himself as he clutched a single letter bearing the imperial army insignia. He began to read the letter aloud.

"It is with deep regret that we inform you of the passing of Sergeant Wynn Typhoon, there was a breach in the northern wall where a pack of infernal hyenas broke the perimeter. Lady typhoon valiantly fought until her squad was allowed retreat and Reinforcements could arrive. Due to her unmatched bravery no casualties were reported among the civilians. However, she soon succumbed to her injuries as we attempted to resuscitate her. To all the soldiers that laid down their lives in this fateful incident I offer my sincere condolences."

Signed- Strike Thunder, Emperor of Raimei.

Upon hearing this Ignis felt numb. He clutched the necklace he wore as tears welled up in his eyes. His parents rushed to him knowing how much she had meant to him. At that moment all Ignis could think about was the sheer helplessness he felt at being weak. Had he accompanied her would she have survived? Regret plagued his heart; he was plunged into darkness as the realization hit him that he would never hear her voice again. He recalled their first kiss, a moment in which he felt his heart was full only for it to shatter into a million pieces at the thought that me may never gaze into her eyes again.
