The morning sun rose slowly over the horizon, spilling warm light across the sea and turning the waves into a rolling sheet of gold and crimson. Their small boat rocked gently on the swells as Orange Town came into view.
At first, it seemed like any other quiet harbor town, with its cluster of small houses along the shoreline and a wooden dock that should have been bustling with fishermen and merchants. As the boat drew closer, however, a strange silence settled over the town, as if the life had been drained from it.
The streets were empty, the docks abandoned, nets and barrels scattered as though whoever had been there had fled in a hurry. Not a single villager walked among the streets, and no sound of work or chatter reached their ears.
Zoro was the first to step onto the pier, landing with a firm thud. His eyes swept over the silent town with a swordsman's instinct, scanning every corner, every shadow. "Looks like a ghost town," he muttered in low tones, his voice carrying a note of caution that reflected the unease that had begun to creep into Magnus's own thoughts.
"Perfect. We'll have it all to ourselves," Luffy said cheerfully, springing onto the dock with his usual reckless grin, the kind that seemed to carry the energy of a dozen people. Already, his mind seemed to be racing ahead to all the fun and excitement an empty town might provide.
Magnus followed last, his boots striking the wood softly but deliberately. He studied the town carefully, taking in every detail. Boarded windows, walls marked with faint gouges, barrels and nets abandoned as if the town's life had simply evaporated overnight.
A scrap of cloth fluttered weakly from a broken pole ahead. On it was crudely painted a wide grin and a red clown nose. Magnus stopped, his gaze tightening on the symbol. "Buggy," he murmured.
Zoro glanced at him, curiosity flickering across his expression. "You know him?"
Magnus's eyes narrowed slightly. "Only by reputation. He is a pirate who plays the fool to hide just how dangerous he really is. He doesn't just take towns. He enjoys toying with them, with their people and their fears."
A high-pitched, theatrical laugh echoed faintly from somewhere deeper in the streets, confirming Magnus's suspicion that the town was far from empty.
Luffy tilted his head, grinning as he followed the sound. "That's him, right?"
Magnus did not answer immediately. His expression remained calm, but inside, thoughts churned. He recognized the quiet suffering that clung to the town like a heavy fog.
This is what happens when fear becomes louder than hope. When the weak are pressed under the heel of those who wield power thoughtlessly, the people stop moving, stop resisting, and simply hide. A clown pulled the strings while the villagers held their breaths, waiting for disaster.
The three of them stepped onto the streets of the town, their footsteps echoing against the cobblestones.
The silence felt unnatural and heavy. Somewhere ahead, the sound of drunken pirates rose and fell, shouting and laughing as if daring anyone to intervene.
Magnus's eyes swept the alleys, the corners, the shadows, noting everything with precision.
Even without a weapon in hand, he could sense danger, detect movement, and read the story that the town itself was trying to tell him.
"Stay alert," he said quietly, his voice low and measured. "This isn't just a pirate's hideout. It is a stage, and he is already watching."
The streets smelled faintly of salt and stale ale. Shutters rattled in the morning breeze, but no one peeked from the windows. Magnus's gaze swept across the town again, noticing the subtle signs of struggle.
A barrel had been split clean in half. Chalk marks on a wall had been half scrubbed away. Footprints led toward the plaza and disappeared, leaving only the impression that someone had been forced to vanish.
"This town is not empty," Magnus muttered under his breath, the observation leaving his voice tight. "It is strangled. Its people are here, but they are too afraid to breathe, too afraid to exist openly. Buggy does not rule through strength alone. He rules by making fear louder than hope."
Zoro raised an eyebrow at the philosophical remark. "Strangled?" he asked, clearly less interested in the moral examination and more focused on practical outcomes.
Magnus did not turn to reply. His gaze lingered on the clown banner swaying above them, and in that moment, he considered the countless people he had seen across the seas whose lives had been wasted.
Suddenly, shouting broke the silence. Three drunken pirates stumbled out of a side alley, carrying sacks of stolen goods. One bellowed, "Oi! Where'd she go?!" swinging wildly, while another wheezed, "She took the whole bag!" and the third cursed and kicked over a barrel. "Buggy'll have our heads if we lose his treasure!"
A flash of movement darted across the rooftops above them. A slim figure with short orange hair moved with the fluidity of a cat, leaping between buildings and clutching a heavy bag to her chest.
"Ohhh! A thief!" Luffy exclaimed, eyes wide with excitement.
The girl landed lightly on a lower roof, expression sharp and focused. She had not noticed them, but Magnus followed her every movement with attention.
This was Nami, the Cat Burglar. She was clever enough to rob pirates blind, fast enough to escape their grasp, and desperate enough to risk everything to survive.
Magnus studied her carefully, recognizing the same drive he had seen in both Zoro and Luffy. She was already fighting for her freedom, even if she did not yet fully understand it.
Zoro snorted quietly. "Looks like trouble."
"Shishishi!" Luffy bounced on his heels, excitement lighting his face. "I like her!"
Magnus's steel-gray eyes lingered on Nami a moment longer. He observed the precision of her movements, the way she balanced risk with speed. She thought she was running from pirates, but in truth, she was already running toward her destiny.
He would build his own crew. He would not merely survive. One day, he would rise to the level of the Emperors, a force that none could ignore, and his name would echo across the seas.
The sun climbed higher, painting the town and docks in gold and orange. Magnus followed Luffy and Zoro silently, ever watchful already planning and already thinking ahead.
The crew he would build, the empire he would carve and the legacy he would leave were already taking shape in his thoughts and he swore silently.
