Chapter 1 - Chapter 1 Memory Reader

My name is Shiroto Akatsuki.

I got hit by Truck-san and ended up in another world. But unlike the usual isekai settings, this wasn't some fantasy land with magic or monsters—it was just a normal world, only with technology far more advanced than anything I knew.

So, I figured I'd just live peacefully here…

But there was one problem.

The original owner of this body—also named Akatsuki—was a total delinquent.

He was a thug who extorted money from classmates, constantly picked fights, peeked at girls in the changing rooms, and even nearly assaulted the school idol once. Just recently, he fought against a gang from the neighboring school and broke his arm in the process.

…Seriously, what kind of mess did I get dumped into?

No wonder everyone hates me.

So today, my plan was simple: sleep through class and keep my head down.

[Announcement, announcement! There will be a special event today. All classes are suspended—please gather at the gymnasium immediately.]

"Tch… whatever. I'll just nap there. Then I'll head home, draw some manga, and read in peace."

With that thought, I shuffled to the gym, picked the last seat in the far-left corner, and immediately dozed off.

Meanwhile, everyone else was buzzing with excitement as the principal began his speech.

"Thank you for gathering so quickly, students. Today is a historic day.

Our school has been selected to test the Memory Reader, a device developed by Tesla Community Company.

Some of you will be chosen to participate, and this test will be broadcast live to the entire world!

Now then, are you ready to display your past memories to forge a brighter future? If so—let the very first Memory Reader Beta Test begin!"

The entire gym erupted in excitement.

A machine that could display one's memories—something that could reveal their talents to the world.

"This is amazing!""Yeah, so exciting!""But isn't it kinda embarrassing, having the whole world see your memories?""Relax, they'll probably just pick the idols and star athletes.""Either way, this is awesome!!"

The first chosen student was Yoichi Isagi, the ace striker and captain of the soccer team. He'd even trained with the U-13 and U-15 squads.

His memories began playing—dribbles, passes, a stunning 30-yard strike into the top corner—like scenes straight from a sports manga.

"Whoa, incredible, Senpai Yoichi!""Kyaaa~ so cool!!""That pass was legendary!""That goal… thirty yards into the top corner… insane!"

[This kid's got a bright future.]

[I hope Manchester Kingdom picks him for their U-17 squad.]

[No way, I want him in Livergoon!]

While I snored away, one student after another showed off their memories. The principal beamed with pride; this would boost the school's reputation for sure.

Then came the turn of the most popular girl, Kitagawa Marin.

Her memories were mostly normal daily life—until one moment.

A thug tried to harass her.

"Hey, how about becoming my girlfriend?""No! Stay away from me!"

He grabbed at her, but Yoichi appeared just in time.

"Didn't you hear her? She said no. Leave her alone.""Don't get in the way of our fun!""Fun? She clearly hates it.""You bastard—wanna die?"

The thug pulled out a knife, but Yoichi launched a soccer ball straight into his face, knocking him out cold and rescuing Marin.

The crowd watching the broadcast went wild.

"It's the legendary 'Save the Heroine' scene!""Senpai Yoichi is so damn cool!""…Wait, doesn't that guy look familiar?""Holy crap—that's Akatsuki!"

And just like that, my body's past was exposed to the world.

The live comments exploded with curses.

[Who's Akatsuki?]

[He's the thug of the school, tried to assault Marin-chan before. They call him the 'King of Osaka District.']

[What the hell, this is huge!!]

And then came the worst part—

"Drag Akatsuki to the Memory Reader! Let's see for ourselves!"

Before I could wake up, students hauled me to the device. It activated instantly, projecting the memories of the original Akatsuki.

"Akatsuki, what do you want to be when you grow up?" an old man asked.

The younger me answered, "I… I want to be a cool delinquent, like the man who saved me and Mom."

The old man laughed. "Why not be a policeman? That's way cooler."

"No! I wanna be just like him!"

The scene shifted—young Akatsuki, bleeding heavily, shielding his mother from thugs.

[Shit… I think I get it now. That's why he became a delinquent.]

[Wait, what? The cops were just standing there? Why didn't they help the kid?!]

Before the viewers could question further, the policeman in the memory spoke vile words:

"Why haven't you finished off that brat yet?"

"Relax, I'll handle him," one thug replied.

"I won't let you lay a hand on my mom!" little Akatsuki shouted.

"Big mouth, huh? Here—take this!"

Whack!

They beat him again and again. His consciousness began to fade.

The cop smirked, unbuckling his belt. "Finally… time for me to have some fun with his mother."

"Damn it… I just wanted to go home peacefully…"

A new voice cut through the alley.

"Boss Gin, we've got trouble!"

"What now? Can't you see I'm about to enjoy myself?"

"It's the Four Emperors of Tokyo… one of them is here."

"So what? I don't care how strong he is—he can't beat a gun."

The corrupt cop aimed and pulled the trigger.

BANG!

But instead of piercing the man, the bullet was stopped.

The figure—tall, imposing—held a glowing card.

"Seriously? I was just walking home, and you point a gun at me? Bad move."

"Barrier."

A shimmering blue shield appeared, deflecting the bullet back into the cop's shoulder. The thugs panicked and fled.

"Tch. Every damn street on the way home is like this… Alright, let's patch the kid up and move on."

He pulled out another card.

"Heal."

Green light enveloped little Akatsuki, closing his wounds.

Before leaving, Akatsuki looked up at him with awe.

"Mister, are you… a superhero?"

The man smirked. "No, kid. I'm a delinquent."

"…That's so cool!!"

"Hah, nothing else. Take care, brat."

"Bye-bye!"

[Wait, what the hell were those cards?]

[They created shields… and healed wounds… what IS that?!]

The world watching was thrown into chaos.

The memory shifted forward, showing Akatsuki a little older.

"Hey, mister! When can I use those cards like you?"

The man chuckled, handing him two cards. "Here, kid. Just these—Attack and Defense, Level 1. That's all I can give you."

Akatsuki's eyes shone. "Thank you, mister!"

And that's where the scene ended.

The entire world was left stunned, whispers filling the gym and chat exploding online.

Just what were those mysterious cards?
