Back then, Goku broke his limits by absorbing the power of Gohan, Goten, Uub, and Trunks as adults. That's how he reached a form beyond Super Saiyan 4.
But this time… things are different.
Uub is still too young, and even if he gathered the power of Vegeta, Gohan, Goten, and Trunks, it probably wouldn't even fill half his body with energy.
As a Super Saiyan 4, the amount of energy inside Goku is so huge, even he doesn't know where his limit is.
"This is tough," Goku muttered, scratching his head. "If that way won't work, I've gotta figure out something else… The best option might be training in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber."
Still, he wasn't happy with that idea. Training alone in that harsh place was inefficient, and the time limit wasn't much either. It would be better with a partner who could push him further.
He thought of Gohan first.
"…Nah, he's too busy studying. He only trains enough to keep sharp, he'd never agree to go in there again."
Then he thought of Goten.
"…If Chi-Chi found out I dragged him into the chamber, I'd be in for the scolding of my life."
Yamcha, Krillin, and Tien? Forget it. They wouldn't agree to something that extreme.
That left only two good choices: Vegeta or Piccolo.
"With Vegeta… ehh, he might say no. He doesn't really like training with me. Guess that only leaves Piccolo," Goku said to himself.
He considered heading to Kami's Lookout right away to invite Piccolo. But another thought popped into his head — maybe that would just waste the opportunity. The Hyperbolic Time Chamber was useful, but breaking past Super Saiyan 4 would take something more.
Then, suddenly, an old face appeared in his mind.
The Old Kai.
He was the one who unlocked Gohan's hidden potential back during the fight with Majin Buu. He even gave up his own life span to bring Goku back once.
"That's it!" Goku's eyes lit up. "The Old Kai! He was the one who helped me regrow my tail too. Maybe he knows how to push Super Saiyan 4 even further!"
Without wasting time, Goku locked onto the energy of the Kaioshin Realm. Normally mortals couldn't sense the aura of gods, but this was GT Goku — he had been there before, and he knew the feeling.
Placing two fingers on his forehead, he focused. His energy flared, and in an instant—
Whoosh!
He vanished.
Kaioshin Realm
The sacred world was as peaceful as ever. The Supreme Kai, Kibito Kai, was calmly observing newly born planets, watching life develop. The Old Kai, however… was completely absorbed in something else.
"Hahaha! That's it, just a little more…!" the Old Kai muttered, grinning like a pervert.
Kibito Kai sighed, already knowing his ancestor's bad habits. "Elder, as gods, we shouldn't be watching things like this…"
The Old Kai snapped at him. "Quiet, boy! It's about to be decided!"
"Decided…? What are you talking about?" Kibito asked, frowning.
He looked where the Old Kai was staring. On a faraway planet, two one-horned beasts were dueling in a tree. One finally toppled over, ending the fight.
"Aw, I lost my bet again…" the Old Kai groaned, before glaring at Kibito. "See? You had the wrong idea! I was watching the match!"
Kibito coughed, embarrassed. "R-Right… nice weather today, huh?"
The Old Kai smirked knowingly, but before either of them could say more—
Fwoosh!
The air split, and Goku appeared out of nowhere, smiling.
"Yo! Long time no see!"
"Goku?!" the two Kais shouted in shock.
The Old Kai's eyes went wide. "Impossible… you made it here on your own?!"
Kibito was just as stunned. Normally, no mortal should be able to teleport directly into the Kaioshin Realm. But Goku… wasn't just any mortal.
But Goku still managed to reach the Sacred World of the Kai on his own, and that was something completely different.
Kibito Kai was confused why Goku had suddenly shown up, but deep down, he was also thankful. Goku's sudden arrival had actually saved him from the Old Kai's weird antics.
"Lord Old Kai, Lord Kaioshin—long time no see!" Goku said cheerfully, giving them a friendly wave.
The Old Kai narrowed his eyes at him. "Hmph… so, you've learned how to move freely between the mortal world and the realm of the gods, huh? That must mean… you can already sense divine ki, can't you?"
Goku nodded without hiding it. "Yeah, I can feel this strange energy coming off you guys. It's different from regular ki."
The Old Kai's expression turned serious for a moment. Even he hadn't expected Goku to grow this much in just three short years. Without anyone guiding him, the Saiyan had already started touching the power of the gods. That kind of progress was insane—even if divine ki wasn't as overwhelming as a God of Destruction's power, it was still the power of a god.
Kibito Kai stayed quiet, watching them talk.
"I get it," the Old Kai finally said, folding his arms. "You didn't come all the way here just to say hello. You want advice on how to get stronger, right?"
"Hehe, you got me." Goku scratched the back of his head, then grew serious. "To be honest, I pushed past Super Saiyan 3 a year ago and reached Super Saiyan 4. After training for a year, I've mastered it. But if I want to go beyond… I don't know how."
He bowed his head respectfully. "That's why I came here to ask for your guidance, Lord Old Kai."
Seeing Goku's honest attitude, the Old Kai stroked his chin. He's strong, but he's not arrogant. And his heart's still pure… Hmph, not a bad candidate for my teachings.
But then he frowned. "It's not impossible for me to help you break past your limits… But shouldn't you fulfill the promise you made me three years ago first?"
Goku froze. His smile dropped instantly, and he looked embarrassed. He knew exactly what the Old Kai was talking about.
"Uh… well, about that… Lord Old Kai, it's been so long, maybe we can just… forget it?" Goku laughed awkwardly, sweat running down his forehead.
The Old Kai's face twisted in fake disappointment. "Hmph! I gave up the rest of my life to save you, and you repay me by breaking your promise? I never thought you'd betray my trust!"
Kibito Kai gave him a look—he could tell the old man was acting.
Sure enough, Goku panicked at the sight of Old Kai's "sad" face. "A-alright, fine! Lord Old Kai, whatever it is, as long as it's in my power, I'll do it!"
The Old Kai's lips curled into a sly grin. That's what I wanted to hear.
"Heh heh… since you're being so sincere, I'll forget about the past. But there is something you can do for me now." His eyes sharpened, his tone suddenly serious.
"You remember I told you I was sealed away long ago by a powerful being, right? That guy… he's still out there."
Goku blinked in surprise. "Wait—you mean, the one who trapped you in the Z Sword?!"
The Old Kai nodded slowly. "That's right. Looking at the whole universe, you might be the only one with a chance of beating him someday. If you agree to fight him when the time comes, then I'll help you surpass Super Saiyan 4… and I'll pass down everything I've learned in my lifetime."
He stared hard into Goku's eyes, serious and determined.
Goku was stunned. In his old world, the Old Kai never mentioned anything like this. He didn't even know who sealed him away.
"Wait… Lord Old Kai, are you saying that even with my power now—even with Super Saiyan 4—I still couldn't beat that guy?"
"Exactly." The Old Kai didn't hesitate.
Goku's eyes widened. Someone stronger than Super Saiyan 4? Could they really exist?
The Old Kai smirked. "What's the matter? Don't tell me you're scared before the fight even starts."
Goku suddenly grinned, fists clenched, his eyes shining with excitement. "Scared? No way! Now I'm even more pumped up! Just who is this guy that managed to seal you away… and how strong is he?!"
When Elder Kai saw Goku's reaction, he smirked inside. His bait had worked.
For Saiyans, nothing is more tempting than two things: more power and a strong enemy to fight.
"Heh, so what do you say? You got the guts to agree?" Elder Kai teased with a sly grin.
"Why wouldn't I? If there's someone out there stronger than Super Saiyan 4, I want to see it for myself!" Goku said with confidence.
"Good. Since you agreed, I won't break my word," Elder Kai replied. "But first, show me. Transform into Super Saiyan 4. I want to see just how strong you've become."
"No problem."
In an instant, Goku called on his power. Golden energy exploded around him, shaking the ground, before shifting into a deep, burning red aura. His body grew covered in crimson fur, long black hair spilled down his back, and his primal ki roared like a storm.
This was Super Saiyan 4.
He skipped straight to it, not even bothering with the earlier forms. That alone showed how well he had mastered the transformation. His wild energy surged but stayed perfectly under his control.
"This power… amazing," Kibito muttered, barely able to breathe under the pressure. "Super Saiyan 4… it's terrifying."
"You've mastered it well," Elder Kai said, nodding as he studied Goku. "Even as a mortal, your strength is brushing up against the level of the gods. A little more, and you could rival them."
Goku scratched his head. "It's nothing big. I just worked at it." Then, with a calm breath, he powered back down, returning to normal.
Elder Kai thought for a moment, then spoke seriously. "With your strength now, there are only two paths forward. The first is one you know well—I unlock your hidden potential and push your power beyond its limits. The second… I teach you how to cultivate godly ki. The power of the gods themselves."
Goku's eyes lit up. He remembered what happened when Elder Kai unlocked Gohan's potential—it gave him strength rivaling a Super Saiyan 3. But godly ki? That was new.
"Hey, Elder Kai… why do I have to pick one? Can't I do both?" Goku asked with a grin.
Elder Kai froze, then chuckled. "Heh. You're smarter than you look. Wanting both, huh? …Fine. Seeing how eager you are, I'll allow it."
"Thanks, Elder Kai!" Goku said happily.
"Come with me." Elder Kai turned and led him to the center of the Sacred World of the Kais.
They both sat cross-legged. Elder Kai spoke: "Relax your mind. I'll pass on the method to sense and control godly ki first."
"Got it." Goku closed his eyes and followed Elder Kai's instructions.
Through their connection, Elder Kai poured the knowledge directly into Goku's mind. Goku felt the information settle inside him, new and mysterious.
"All the basics of godly power are in your head now," Elder Kai said. "While you focus on that, I'll also begin unlocking your hidden potential."
Then the old man stood and started moving around Goku in his strange, silly dance—just like when he had awakened Gohan's power.
Meanwhile, in his mind, Goku was exploring the new knowledge of godly ki. But then—something strange appeared before him.
"Huh? What's that?" Goku blinked at the odd energy floating in his spiritual world.
It pulsed with a strange familiarity, like it was part of him, yet separated for some reason. Curious, Goku reached out, but the moment he touched it, he was blasted back by an invisible force.
"What the—?!" He shook his head, confused. "This thing… it feels like me, but it's not… Weird."
With no clear answer, he left it alone and focused back on understanding divine power.
Time slipped by. Three long hours passed. Elder Kai's dance grew slower, sweat dripping down his face. The strain of unlocking Goku's power was enormous.
At last, the Elder Kai stopped, panting hard. "Haa… haa… That's as much… as I can do. Your potential… it's bottomless. No matter how much I draw out, there's always more."
Goku slowly opened his eyes. His body felt heavier, but at the same time overflowing with strength. "So it's over? Elder Kai… you okay?" he asked, noticing the old man practically out of breath.
"Yes, it's over—for now. That's all the potential I can draw out of you. The rest… you'll have to awaken yourself." Elder Kai gave him a long, meaningful look.
