At this moment, no matter how high their standards usually were, everyone had to admit it—Quicksilver was truly great.
He had already earned the qualifications to be a superhero.
He and his sister Wanda were both products of Hydra, born from its human experiments, yet even in the midst of all that mud and filth, they could still grow something pure and beautiful.
"This shows that there's still hope for the two of them," Nick Fury said. "When we face them in the future, we need to be mindful of our approach. They're not hardened villains through and through. On the contrary, there's a chance to save them—they could even become our teammates."
For once, everyone reached a rare consensus on this matter and nodded.
For true fanatics, of course, they'd have to be stopped by force—but for children like these who could still be saved, a helping hand was necessary.
At the same time, deep in Hydra's base, Wanda suddenly felt a surge of heat boiling within her body, illuminating the entire room.
The instant she saw her brother die, it felt as if some switch had been flipped inside her.
"Calm down, calm down, little sister!" Pietro shouted. "You're not right… you're glowing red."
"Glowing red?" Wanda froze. There was no mirror nearby, so she couldn't see herself, but she seemed to realize something. "Glowing red… like in the video?"
"Yes, exactly like that," Pietro replied hurriedly.
"So that's it… this must be what Lin Feng called… Chaos Magic?" Wanda murmured.
Instinctively, her mind began to recall some applications of Chaos Magic, as if someone had sealed knowledge in her brain, waiting for her awakening to make it usable.
"Lin Feng said our powers weren't due to the Mind Stone, but the energy inherent in our own bodies. I thought he was exaggerating, but now… it seems it's true," Pietro said excitedly.
This meant he could potentially awaken his own superpowers as well.
Yet he hadn't expected that upon witnessing his own death, his powers didn't awaken—but Wanda's did instead.
It was awkward. Shouldn't he be the one more devastated than his sister?
"Looks like it," Wanda said. "This makes me more certain that what's written in this diary is true. So why did you use your body to take the hit? With your speed, couldn't you push them away? Couldn't you use your arms to shield them instead of putting yourself directly in harm's way just to prove you're a superhero?"
Wanda shot Pietro a scolding glance. Seeing her brother die before her eyes had triggered her Chaos Magic, something that should have only awakened under the influence of the Mind Stone—but here it was, manifesting early.
And seeing Pietro act so casually afterward only made her angrier.
Did her brother even think things through? He'd become a superhero in one swoop… and what about her? Left alone?
Then she remembered Lin Feng's diary: her brother's death was just the first step—later, her husband would die, and even their two children would be lost.
She couldn't even imagine what that would look like—it was terrifying.
Now she felt immense relief. Her brother was still alive, and this was merely a potential future, on a different timeline—they hadn't reached that point yet.
There was still a chance to save them.
"That damned robot… next time I see him, I'll rip out his core immediately," Wanda said with murderous intent.
Killing her brother was absolutely intolerable. Even if it was only a possible future, the pain it brought her was already excruciating.
Beside her, Pietro trembled. He'd always been a little afraid of his clever sister, worried she might punish him if she got angry.
But after the initial fear came anger—why had he been the one to die?
His future self had been reckless. So many superheroes were fighting, none of them died, and yet he was the one who perished? Why him?
He was furious and unwilling to accept it.
He had been annoyed at Lin Feng calling him the "Shame of Speedsters," but now it felt personal.
Especially since he'd made such a flashy entrance, outmaneuvering the Avengers all by himself—so why was he labeled the "Shame of Speedsters"?
And that other Quicksilver from another universe could beat him… he didn't believe it.
But after witnessing it, he had no arguments. The logic was hard to grasp. As a speedster, he should have been able to dodge at the last moment—but he couldn't.
Sure, he was trying to save someone, but that explanation felt a little weak.
It was simply that he wasn't fast enough. If he had been, none of this would have happened.
"Being a superhero… you can die too?"
Gwen's chest tightened slightly as she watched Pietro die in the video.
She had faced life-and-death situations many times as a superhero, and had survived.
Plus, from the information in Lin Feng's diary, this was the first time she'd seen a superhero actually die.
It gave her a false impression: superheroes don't die—they have what Lin Feng called a "protagonist aura."
In other words, being the main character should keep you safe; at worst, it's the people around you who are in danger.
But now, even superheroes were so fragile—they could just… die.
This made her realize that survival really depended on that "protagonist aura." Without it, their deaths came as quickly as enhanced soldiers'.
Her perception of superheroes had just been completely rewritten.
Thor had a similar experience in another timeline—he'd been accidentally killed by Hawkeye.
Yes, utterly humiliated. A god brought down so easily.
How was that different from Pietro's humiliating death?
Quicksilver appeared to be a formidable speedster, yet he was so fragile.
"So even in the correct timeline Lin Feng mentioned, those without a protagonist aura… can die this easily?" Thor said in disbelief.
"Without absolute strength, the protagonist aura is the best explanation," Odin said, glancing at his son. "If he had your physical strength, would he still fear this level of attack?"
Odin spoke the truth, and Thor realized he was right—it wasn't just a lack of aura; it was a lack of power.
But then Thor worried again. Compared to the enemies he'd face in the future, he too would be "underpowered."
There was no comparison.
What Pietro faced now, Thor would face later—it was terrifying to think about.
The S.H.I.E.L.D. team also felt helpless. From Lin Feng's diary, they knew Quicksilver would die, likely in a messy way—but they hadn't expected it to be this sloppy.
No soft BGM, no heartfelt farewell—he was just gone.
Even Hawkeye felt guilty. By the laws of cause and effect, Quicksilver died trying to save him and the child he carried. It hadn't happened yet, but it already felt as though he had caused the death of a boy.
He was only eighteen or nineteen—a prime age—and hadn't yet enjoyed life. He died to save him.
"Though I knew Lin Feng would tease him about dying badly, I didn't expect it to be this sloppy," Hill said with a wry smile.
"But I feel like I owe this child," Hawkeye sighed. "He got me gravely injured, almost killed me, but in the end, he saved me. It's… hard to describe."
"Clint, don't overthink it," Natasha said. "It wasn't intentional—it's just an accident. You both have the heart of a superhero, and you protected that child."
"But I couldn't save the other child. I'm the useless one in the Avengers… maybe it should have been me instead," Hawkeye said, filled with self-blame.
If he'd paid a little more attention, if he'd been a little stronger… maybe it wouldn't have ended this way.
"We should learn to accept it. Being a superhero means facing things like this—even if one of us eventually dies, it's normal," Captain Rogers said with a sigh.
This had already happened—for example, in one timeline, Tony Stark's death was a stark reality.
"I know. I'm not unprepared… it's just that he was still a child…" Hawkeye sighed.
"Then make sure it doesn't happen this time," Natasha comforted him.
