Captain Rogers instinctively denied the accusation. Both he and Tony Stark were the kind of people who shouldered responsibility—they were not the type to shirk blame.
It was inconceivable for him to ever question why Tony hadn't saved him.
Tony nodded. He didn't doubt Steve's words; instead, his gaze was fixed on the screen: a massive spatial rift.
Everyone present recognized it immediately. This was the very rift through which the Chitauri invaded Earth during the Battle of New York—back then, it was viewed from the ground. Now, from space, they saw the battle from above.
Countless Leviathan ships poured through the rift toward New York. The sheer scale was terrifying. Even with the Avengers, Earth had barely survived the first invasion.
The Leviathans were too numerous. Even Hulk and Thor, individually capable of destroying them, could not possibly eliminate them all.
The horrifying sight left everyone's hair standing on end, as if falling into an icy abyss.
"This scene…" Tony muttered under his breath, his face grim.
He knew this feeling all too well. After learning of the Chitauri threat and simulating their combat capability, he had run countless battle models with J.A.R.V.I.S. No matter how he adjusted the parameters, the conclusion was always the same: humanity stood no chance.
This knowledge tormented him day and night. Once asleep, the nightmare returned, replaying the same terrifying scene.
This wasn't the actual future—but it was Tony Stark's nightmare. A scene he feared more than anything.
Earth's victory in the Battle of New York had been pure luck. Tony constantly analyzed the variables: the Chitauri had no full-scale army and used a rift to invade. When the rift collapsed, the battle ended.
But that was just the first invasion. What if the next time, the Chitauri came in full force?
Even more concerning, their mothership had been destroyed with a nuclear strike. But were there more motherships? And what if they learned from their first defeat?
If another invasion occurred, the Chitauri would be prepared. They would deploy their full force. Could Earth withstand that?
Tony's foresight drove him to build his armored legion. Though tiny on the scale of interstellar civilizations, it was better than doing nothing.
Tony's personality—meticulous, cautious, preparing for the worst—bordered on severe paranoia. He never left his fate to chance. Every failure taught him to improve: if a suit froze at high altitude, next time it wouldn't. If the number of suits was insufficient, he'd build an army of them.
This was why, despite being just a human, Tony became the soul of the Avengers and one of the "big three."
Even Wanda, who could manipulate minds, was momentarily stunned by Tony's fear. When Quicksilver attempted to act against him, Wanda's subtle smile halted him, allowing Tony to seize the Mind Stone.
The team could now understand the depth of Tony's terror.
"Tony, sometimes you worry too much," Steve Rogers said reassuringly. "No matter what, you have us. You're never fighting alone. Whatever the future holds, we can face it together."
Tony, touched, responded half-heartedly: "Don't be so optimistic… I'm not that cheerful."
Nick Fury added, "Your paranoia is serious, just like Lin Feng mentioned."
Tony retorted, "You're not much better—aren't you also paranoid?"
According to Lin Feng's diary, both Tony and Fury were severe paranoids, always preparing multiple contingencies. You never knew how many backups a seemingly friendly person had.
Hawkeye interjected: "We seem off-topic. Shouldn't we focus on Quicksilver? His speed makes him hard to counter."
The team nodded. Quicksilver had already caused chaos in just a few moves.
Natasha added: "But he can be swayed. According to Lin Feng, Quicksilver died trying to save someone, so he's not irredeemable. He hasn't tried to kill us—otherwise, we'd already be dead."
"However, the truly important one is Wanda," Bruce Banner said. "She's the key figure. Her existence affects the entire timeline. Compared to her, Quicksilver seems like a minor problem."
Tony asked J.A.R.V.I.S.: "Have their appearances been recorded?"
"Yes, scanned, modeled, and archived," J.A.R.V.I.S. replied.
Tony shrugged: "Let's search using these details. We might locate the Hydra base, at least identify the country. The Strykers said the Avengers were sent to test them—so it's likely outside the U.S."
Fury added: "We need to be vigilant. Before fully confronting the Chitauri, we must uncover Hydra agents. If they infiltrated S.H.I.E.L.D., they could sabotage us at critical moments. A thorough internal review is necessary—even retired officials might be compromised."
Fury had no respect for hierarchy here; anyone could be a hidden Hydra agent.
However, he ruled out his predecessor Alexander Pierce—Pierce was likely not Hydra, or else he wouldn't have allowed Fury to rise. The council balanced S.H.I.E.L.D. leadership, ensuring Pierce's faction couldn't dominate.
