Nick Fury quickly realized a crucial point: S.H.I.E.L.D.'s recruitment and vetting processes weren't always strict. Right after its founding, the agency was fairly lax.
At that time, the United States absorbed a large number of Nazi scientists, and S.H.I.E.L.D. did the same with many Hydra scientists.
This was normal for the era. Germany had been at the forefront of global technology, and both the U.S. and USSR scrambled to acquire German talent after the war.
Though the Allies had defeated Germany militarily, they lagged behind in cutting-edge tech. By integrating German scientists, the U.S. and USSR quickly became global technological leaders, paired with their massive industrial capacities—eclipsing old powers like the UK and France.
S.H.I.E.L.D. absorbing Hydra talent was part of this context. They needed expertise, and recruiting these scientists seemed harmless—Hydra's main forces were thought destroyed.
But now, Fury realized the consequences of that policy. Hydra had clearly survived and infiltrated S.H.I.E.L.D., hiding within its ranks.
"To achieve large-scale infiltration, they had to be in leadership," Fury thought. Only high-ranking officials could control recruitment and policies, determining who entered and who didn't.
Even partial infiltration would be enough for Hydra to secretly take root. And it was happening right under their noses—without them knowing. Without Lin Feng's diary, they would never have suspected that S.H.I.E.L.D. had become Hydra's puppet.
Through the agency, Hydra could absorb resources from across the world. No wonder their military technology was so advanced.
The group considered the grim implications: everything they'd done so far might have inadvertently benefited Hydra.
Tony Stark shivered at the thought. Fury had once hinted at acquiring Stark tech for S.H.I.E.L.D., and Stark had been tempted—under extreme global threat, his personal stance meant little.
Luckily, he had resisted. If he hadn't, his technology would have likely ended up in Hydra's hands. Having grown up on Captain America stories, he knew Hydra's evil all too well—the eternal villains of comics, movies, and shows, always plotting world domination.
"Now we don't know how deep Hydra has infiltrated… funny how Lin Feng's 'Serpent Shield' actually refers to S.H.I.E.L.D.," Hawkeye said with a bitter laugh.
The others nodded; the consequences were terrifying.
Fury, however, saw a silver lining. Previously, S.H.I.E.L.D. operated in the open, and Hydra in the shadows. Now, armed with the diary, they knew of Hydra's presence—they could investigate and counteract.
Fury began tracing Hydra's influence, starting from the earliest scientists. Slowly but surely, they'd uncover the truth.
Yet the extent of Hydra's corruption was unknown—even many high-ranking officials might be secretly Hydra agents.
If they rushed, the plan could backfire. Fury, naturally suspicious, even doubted his superiors: the representatives of the five major powers might also be compromised. Reporting too soon could provoke Hydra's counterattack.
So they had to proceed cautiously.
Everyone felt the weight of the revelation, yet were relieved to know in advance—otherwise, the consequences would have been catastrophic.
"But this assumes Hydra never gets the diary," Stark warned. "It appears randomly, meaning it could fall into their hands anytime. Then, is our advantage really an advantage?"
The thought chilled them further.
Captain America Rogers said solemnly: "If it comes to that, there will be a final battle. This time, we must eliminate Hydra once and for all."
Meanwhile, on the scene, Strucker was cornered by Cap. "Relax, once you're in our custody… you'll cooperate fully," Strucker said.
"I'll charge you for illegal human experiments. How many of you are there?" Cap demanded, unaware of Wanda's presence nearby.
Cap moved to capture Strucker—but a shadowy figure attacked him, hurling him down a staircase. Cap couldn't pursue and watched helplessly as the attacker escaped. He called out on the team channel: "Found a second superhuman, female. Do not engage!"
Within moments, he subdued Strucker.
Stark, witnessing this, also saw something alarming: in the sky, remnants of a massive Leviathan ship hovered—the same used in the Battle of New York, a symbol of terror and destruction.
This confirmed their earlier suspicions: the events occurred after the Chitauri invasion of New York.
"Thor, I think I've found the prize!" Stark said, noticing the Mind Stone.
Unbeknownst to him, Wanda was approaching from behind, outside the protection of his armor. Without the armor, he was vulnerable.
Stark's future self had been reckless—leaving the armor exposed was a grave mistake. Wanda silently neared, launching a Chaos Magic attack on his mind.
Meanwhile, the Leviathan remnants rose, leaving destruction in their wake. Familiar faces—Captain America, Thor, Black Widow, Hawkeye, even Hulk—fell in the carnage, hinting at a terrifying future.
As Stark tried to comprehend what had happened, the future Captain America grabbed him, gasping: "You could have saved us!"
And then, he died.
"You didn't try hard enough!"
A voice whispered in Stark's ear. Cap, watching from the outside, protested: "That's not me! I would never say that…"
