Chapter 1 - The CEO and his assistant

Skylar's POV

I exhaled sharply with a gasp echoing out of my mouth. My fingers clutched around the hem of my peach knee-length gown, and my toes curled up nervously inside my black shoe.

"Wow… this is beautiful." My eyes flickered with excitement. After a few shaky breaths, I stepped into the glass-fronted world of the Ravenscroft group.

I beamed with excitement as I scurried through a group of workers rushing off to their respective floors. No wonder everyone wants to work here. Everything is simply exquisite.

From the crystals hanging on the walls to the luxurious decoration and rich-looking staff.

"Watch where you are going!" I heard someone echo into my ears, and I quickly looked up.

"Forgive me," I apologised and rushed into the elevator.

I got an email at the last minute to resume work this morning by eight. I've been applying to this company since I graduated from college two years ago, and to finally be accepted is a dream come true.

I made it to the presidential floor and quickly checked my email to confirm the office I will be resuming in.

"Bingo!" I clicked my tongue against my teeth in excitement.

"Good morning…" I greeted the front desk receptionist.

"Are you Miss Skylar?" She grumbled, and I nodded my head with a smile plastered on my face.

"The president is waiting for you." She said swiftly and went back to her work. I bowed my head and walked to the office she pointed to.

I knocked on the door a few times and finally heard a muffled grunt. I pushed the door open and froze on the spot.

Gorgeous….

My mind screamed at me, and my body shivered. My eyes lit up, and I was mesmerised by the most exotic, green, enigmatic eyes I have ever seen.

He had his fingers flipping through some documents with his sleeves rolled up and hair sprouting out. My eyes fell on his bare chest, peeking at me through a few loosened buttons.

I gulped down some saliva and subconsciously licked my lips.

"Are you just going to stand there like some statue and drool over me all day long, or get in here and get some work done?" His deep, sturdy, and firm voice made my heartbeat accelerate, and I almost went into a trance.

"Uhmm… Mmm… I'm sorry…. I uhmm…" My tongue wrapped together, and I turned away in embarrassment.

Words… Skylar, words…

I reminded myself as I had rehearsed the line a few million times.

"I'm sorry Mr…" I quickly checked his desk for his name.

Ravenscroft?

Shit!!

"Mr Ravenscroft!! I was just a little bit overwhelmed. My name is Skylar Lakewood, and I'm your…." My words caught halfway.

"I don't care about your name. Competence impresses me, and not names. The only reason you are my assistant is because I chose you, not because you qualified." He spoke sternly, and my face twisted into a frown.

"So do this job like your life depends on it, because it does. You will never find a better job, now leave my office and wait for further instructions." He concluded and looked away from me.

"Yes, Mr Ravenscroft.." I shrugged and walked out of his office looking dejected.

"How rude!!" I muttered beneath my breath.

Even though he's right. I will never find another job like this. I graduated from college a while back.

This is my first job, and I'm working as an office assistant to the CEO of the biggest corporation in the country.

And my salary? All I can say is that it's ten times better than any offer out there. So yes! I will have to put up with my pain in the ass boss.

I have a lot of debts to pay off after all…

"Your office is over there. Don't bother setting up. You won't last a month. No one ever has." The receptionist said, and my eyes widened with shock.

"What!" I couldn't help but blurt out. The receptionist scoffed and returned to her work without paying me any attention.

I drew in sharp breaths to curb my nervousness as my body was already shaking and my palms were sweaty. I dragged my heavy feet to the office and dumped myself on the chair.

With teary eyes, I took a peek at my office and noticed how big it was. It was painted in white and has really fine furniture and aesthetics.

I have my own complete set of computers, an extra laptop, and even a file box. My lips spread into a thin smile. This is the kind of office I have always dreamed of ever since I was in college.

"A water dispenser!" I gasped in excitement and flipped out of the chair. I walked around the office and picked up the TV remote, placed side by side with the AC remote.

"Wow…" I giggled excitedly, but then my happiness was cut short the minute the office telecom beeped. I had no idea what that meant, but I'm sure it was Mr Ravenscroft calling for me.

My face fell, and I walked away from the TV. I passed by the mirror hanging on the wall and paused. I turned around and stared at myself in the mirror.

"I can do this, I'm not going to let him intimidate me. Others before me might have given up, but I won't. I need this job and all the money I can get from it." I reminded myself and shut my eyes.

I forced a smile, adjusted my dress, and walked out of my office with my head up high.

"Mr Ravenscroft, you called for me, sir." I cleared my throat before speaking with a smile plastered all over my face, but he didn't spare me a glance.

A hard thud on his desk sent me flinching, forcing me to frown.

"Those are your tasks. Finish them before leaving." He said, and my face twisted in shock as I stared at the stack of papers and documents on the desk.

"All of these?" I couldn't help but ask.

"You have a problem with that?" His stern voice filled the room.

"Not at all, I just wanted to make sure." My voice shook as I spoke, and I quickly picked up the files. They were super heavy, but I didn't dare show my discomfort.

I managed to carry it to my office and dropped it on the desk while some fell on the floor.

"Phew!" I sighed in relief. My eyes caught sight of something on the floor, and I quickly picked it up.

"Rules…" my voice trailed as I sat down to read every one of them.

"7:30…"

"He wants me to resume at 7:30 in the morning? What is wrong with that man? Everyone resumes at 8:00 in the morning, but I'm supposed to resume thirty minutes earlier." I read the rule out loud with a scoff.

"Coffee… Documents…"

"What is he? A child?" I murmured.

Ridiculous….

"What a jerk.." I complained with a pout and dropped the paper. I will just memorise them when I get home.

I picked up one of the documents and began working on it. I'm supposed to transcribe and upload every one of them to the company's system.

"This is going to be hard, but what choice do I have?" I murmured and got to work.
