Chapter 4 - In between the lines.

Tristan's POV

Blood trailed down my forehead from the cut the sharp edge of the ID card caused. I stood there dumbfounded as the whispers and murmurs from the employees filled my eyes.

My eyes flickered, with my fist clenched as I watched her leave with her legs stomping angrily and her sobs filling the hallway.

"Mr Ravenscroft!" My Steve called my name carefully, and I heaved a deep sigh. I turned around to look at him, and everyone was staring at me.

I gulped down some saliva and straightened my suit.

"Let's go! Reschedule the meeting." I ordered and walked away. The murmurs and whispers increased as I left, and my anger doubled with frustration.

How dare she?

My mind spiralled with confusion, and I made my way back to my office. I slumped on the chair and threw my head back with my leg thudding vehemently.

The scene washed through my mind, and her face glued to my memory.

Her voice.

Her sobs.

Her lips.

Even her smell lingered as I sniffed some air. All of a sudden, I found myself chuckling loudly, and then I began laughing as well.

No one has had the audacity of speaking to me like that. At least not in the company. I shook my head and shut my eyes as I laughed more.

My lips curved in amusement, and every bit of what just happened replayed in my head.

I heard a knock on the door and jerked up.

"Come inside!" I cleared my throat as I spoke and threw my face away.

"Mr Ravenscroft." I heard Sonia call my name, and my brows creased into a frown.

"You?" My face fell, and she nodded at me confused.

"Yes sir," She answered, and I sighed deeply.

"What do you want?" I asked her.

"Uhmm… Miss Skylar left her bag and phone behind. Her phone has been ringing nonstop, and I don't know what to do with it." Sonia complained.

"Trash it," I answered.

"Uhnn!" She exclaimed.

"You heard me. Don't disturb me for something so irrelevant. She no longer works here anyway." I responded, and she bowed her head. She turned around, and I felt my heart in my stomach.

"Wait!" I stopped her, and she paused.

"Leave them here," I said with my fingers pointing to the couch. She quickly did as I said and was out of my office seconds later.

The moment she left, I felt a pique of curiosity. I stood up from my chair and made my way to the couch. I picked up her phone, and immediately the phone rang.

City Hospital

"Hospital? Why is the hospital calling? Did something happen to her?" My mind flipped, and I quickly answered the call.

"Hello!" I spoke.

"Miss Skylar," I heard a female voice.

"This is her uhmm… This is her boss." I was forced to say.

"Oh! Please inform Mrs Skylar that she needs to get in touch with us as soon as possible. Her mother's health is deteriorating fast, and she might not make it through the night if she doesn't deposit the money." The person informed me, and my hand dropped.

Shit!!

That must be the reason why she has been so upset and disorganised all day. And I pushed her button even more.

My ringing phone jolted me out of my thoughts, and I made way to pick it up.

My eyes darkened, and the blood on my face wiped off as I saw the caller.

"What is it?" My stern voice brushed through the phone.

"Your father has requested that you make it to the inventory dinner tonight. Your brothers will be there as well." Williams informed me.

"Fine!" I replied and disconnected the call. That sixty five year old butler refused to leave me alone.

It took some minutes before my rage dispersed, so I picked up my phone and put a call through.

"Get me the address of Miss Skylar. Also, assign someone to go to the city hospital and look for her mother. Get every information and pay all the bills." I ordered and ended the call.

I grabbed my suit jacket, phone, and Skylar stuff and stormed out of the office.

Twenty minutes later, I arrived at a noisy neighbourhood. I frowned as I looked at the address the welfare department sent to me for confirmation.

"It's here!" I heaved a deep sigh as I alighted from the car.

I felt nostalgic with a smile on my face as I took a look around the houses and sighted a few people staring at me.

Memories of the past came flooding down my mind as I remembered how my mother would wait for me to arrive home from school while she delivered chicken around the neighbourhood.

I was always happy to join her in delivering chicken because we got to make more money, and the owner of the chicken shop would give me leftovers.

Our neighbourhood back then looked a little bit like this. I shook my head, waving my thoughts away.

Who is the rich man looking for?

Someone just hit the jackpot in our neighbourhood.

Should we go ask who he is?

We will wait and see who he's here for.

"How typical," I murmured as I walked to the first one storey building on the street. I observed a noodle restaurant on the ground floor as I climbed up the stairs.

"I'm sure it's here," I noted as I saw a bra and some ladies' skirts spread in the sun. I walked towards the door and knocked.

The door creaked open, and our eyes locked.

Skylar stood by the door in a jean bum short and a white tank top. Her hair was dishevelled, and her eyes were puffy like she had not stopped crying since.

"Mr Ravenscroft!" Her eyes widened with shock, and a gasp escaped from her lips.

She quickly covered her chest with her arms around her body, and her cheeks burned in embarrassment.

"What a tiny house." The words fell out of my mouth before I could think, and she frowned..

"What do you want?" She tilted her head forward, and I chuckled.

"Here, you left your phone and handbag." I pointed them towards her.

"Oh!" She muffled.

"You didn't notice? I guess you were too busy crying." I chuckled, and she snatched her handbag away from me.

"Thanks," she muttered, and I nodded my head.

"Wait a minute? You came all the way here to bring this?" Her face twisted in shock, and my mind went blank.

What should I say?

"Uhmm yeah." I simply said, and her mouth dropped open.

"Besides, I will be attending an inventory dinner tonight with other CEOs and company executives. I need my assistant there as well. So wash up and meet me in the car." I dished my words in a single breath and walked away before she could even protest.
