Chapter 139 - The Ancient One Is Stunned: The Future Has Become Completely Unclear!

"The Avengers…?"

Thor fell into deep thought.

If it had been before he got the diary—more precisely, before he saw Captain America wielding his hammer in a battle against the Destroyer—Thor never would have considered such a thing.

With pride that rivaled Tony Stark's, and as a god of Asgard, how could he ever be willing to stand on equal footing with mere mortals?

But things were different now.

Though he hadn't been exiled to Midgard for long, Thor was no longer the same as before.

Losing Mjolnir, being mistaken for a lunatic—all those blows had made him realize that perhaps he wasn't as extraordinary as he once believed.

Captain America, a mortal, had managed to stand against the Destroyer, and Tony Stark, relying on the armor he built, could even fight it head-on.

It made Thor see that mortals of Midgard were not as weak as he'd imagined.

He wouldn't say it aloud, but deep down, he had already acknowledged them.

These Midgardians—some of them were worthy to stand beside Thor, the mighty God of Thunder.

And besides…

He already had considerable trust in that diary.

Given the brutal future described within it, forming alliances with other powerful individuals might not be a bad idea.

After all, wasn't that what his future self had done?Or rather, what the version of him from another universe had done?

"You don't have to answer me right now," Nick Fury said, noticing Thor's hesitation and skillfully choosing to press no further. "Take your time and think it over."

Since Thor was still unable to return to Asgard, the one-eyed spymaster had already made up his mind.

He would use every moment of Thor's stay on Earth to win him over—whatever it took.

Let Black Widow try to get close to him romantically, let Captain America bond with him through Mjolnir, or employ other means—whatever worked.

In short, Fury was determined to secure the God of Thunder.

"You know," Thor said, his tone turning reflective, "over more than a thousand years, I've led the finest and most valiant warriors of the Nine Realms into countless battles. But leading a Midgardian force… that's something I've never done."

"It sounds… interesting. I might consider it."

With a show of exaggerated deliberation, Thor nodded slowly, pretending to be reluctant.

Nick Fury: "…"

For crying out loud—don't add your own lines! When did I ever say you'd lead the Avengers?

I only said join!

"Get ready, Thor. We're relocating in thirty minutes," Fury said at last, regaining his serious tone.

"Relocating?"

"Where are we going?" Thor asked curiously.

"You'll know when we get there," Fury replied, deliberately mysterious.

Where were they going?Naturally—to the newest secret base.

This one was far too remote and inconvenient for Fury's operations.

And besides, the Asgardian Warriors Three and the Destroyer had both arrived here via massive energy transmissions.

That first "Avengers vs. Destroyer" battle had drawn enough attention already. It was only a matter of time before curious eyes found this place.

They couldn't stay here much longer.

So, the moment the diary's "spoiler" ended and Thor was still struggling to lift his hammer, Fury had already begun making arrangements.

After finalizing his plans, Fury returned to his temporary office, issued a few last orders, and once everything was ready, he and the gathered Avengers boarded a Quinjet and left.

They arrived at another, newly prepared secret base.

Once Thor, Captain America, and the others were settled in, Fury—exhausted—returned to his office.

He allowed himself only a few minutes of rest before straightening up again and diving back into work.

"Barton," he called.

"The New Mexico operation is over. I've got a new task for you."

Hawkeye stepped in. "Sir, not even a short vacation?" he joked, spreading his hands.

Of course, it was only half a joke. Field agents like them didn't get vacations.

"This assignment is easier than a vacation," Fury replied dryly, then got straight to the point. "Peggy Carter. I want you to keep a close eye on her."

"Peggy Carter?"

That caught Barton completely off guard.

Of course he knew who she was—how could he not? But that only made it more confusing.

Wasn't she nearly a hundred years old by now? Still alive, sure, but long since irrelevant to current affairs.

Why would the Director suddenly want her watched?

"I've received reliable intel that another Captain America may be lurking around her," Fury explained before Barton could even ask. "So yes—your true target is that other Captain America."

Another Captain America?

Wait, there was more than one?

That was news to Barton.

"Sir, is there anything else you can tell me about this… other Cap?" he asked after a brief pause.

"He looks almost identical to Rogers," Fury said simply, offering only what Barton needed to complete the task—and nothing more.

Almost identical?

So maybe… a fanatic impersonator?

Barton still had doubts, but since the Director clearly didn't intend to elaborate, he didn't press.

With a curt nod, he saluted and hurried off to carry out his mission.

"Natasha."

As soon as Barton left, Fury summoned Black Widow.

"The investigations into the black Captain America and the serum are suspended," he ordered.

"The Hulk situation—also suspended."

"For now, you'll stay here at the base and focus on getting close to Thor."

"The best outcome," Fury said without a trace of shame, "would be for you to replace Jane Foster."

There it was—the Director's ambition laid bare.

"Sir, are you sure?" Natasha raised an eyebrow skeptically. "Thor's an Asgardian god. Isn't this… a bit much?"

"Don't tell me you wouldn't want him to grant you your own spell—make you a female Thor like Jane Foster," Fury replied, perfectly serious.

He'd thought it through.

There was no way someone like Natasha could lift Mjolnir through moral purity alone.

Over the years, she'd done too many dirty jobs for him—and before that, as part of the Red Room, she'd been a killer through and through.

So the "traditional" route was out of the question.

But the diary had revealed something important—there was more than one way to wield the hammer.

If Odin's enchantment could be bypassed by Thor himself creating a new one… then why not try that?

If Natasha could truly win Thor's heart, perhaps she could earn her own special enchantment.

Fury figured it was worth a shot.

"I'm a spy, Director," Natasha replied meaningfully.

A spy doesn't need to want—only to obey.

"Excellent."

Fury nodded with satisfaction and waved her off.

After that, he gave Coulson another set of orders, then left the base himself to meet Tony Stark in secret.

"This is everything I've uncovered recently," Fury said, handing over a folder of printed documents. "You'll find it useful."

They were Hydra files—collected through old-fashioned, offline methods that JARVIS couldn't access.

Tony took them smoothly, his movements practiced. The two of them had been secretly collaborating against Hydra ever since its assassination attempt on him.

He was used to it by now.

"You've got something else on your mind," Tony said sharply, eyeing Fury. "You know I hate it when people beat around the bush. Just say it."

"Good," Fury said with a faint smile. "I like that about you."

"It's about the Tesseract—"

"Nick Fury!"

Tony cut him off immediately. "For God's sake, have you learned nothing? Are you seriously planning to gamble with the safety of the entire planet again?"

He was already annoyed.

The diary had explicitly revealed that the Battle of New York would be caused by the Tesseract. And yet here Fury was, still messing with it?

What was going on in that bald head of his?

"No, Stark, you misunderstand," Fury said quickly, shaking his head. "I'm not asking you to study the Tesseract. I want you to build a new global defense system around it."

Ah.

That was different.

Tony's expression softened instantly, and he agreed without hesitation.

In fact, even if Fury hadn't asked, he'd planned to do it anyway.

After all, the Chitauri invasion had relied on the Tesseract's portal.

It was far too important—there was no way he'd let Loki get his hands on it.

The two men came to an easy agreement, then casually parted ways.

They even pretended not to know each other—discretion at its finest.

But neither of them realized… their "secret" meeting had been watched from start to finish.

By who?

Not Zhou Cheng—he had no interest in spying on people.

Nor was it Hydra.

Though Hydra constantly monitored Fury, he was still the world's top spy, more than capable of evading them.

So who was it, then?

The Ancient One.

"This scene… it wasn't among the countless futures I once saw," she murmured.

In the vast chamber of Kamar-Taj, the Sorcerer Supreme gazed at the floating projection before her, her brow furrowing slightly.

Having lived for countless years—no, as the guardian of the Time Stone, one who could perceive the future itself—her existence was usually monotonous.

She had always known everything that would happen.

It was like watching Detective Conan already knowing who the killer was—mind-numbingly boring.

Perhaps that was one reason she wanted to retire.

Her days held little meaning anymore.

But two years ago, everything changed.

The Ancient One had noticed something strange: the once-fixed future had started to blur.

Timelines she could once observe clearly began to vanish—or worse, turn completely opaque.

Even she couldn't see through them anymore.

That had never happened before.

And since then, more and more possible futures had been erased or obscured.

The events unfolding in the present were no longer entirely visible to her.

Just like the scene she had witnessed moments ago.

She didn't understand what was happening.

She had tried countless times to investigate, but every time she reached for the source of the anomaly, she felt an immense force blocking her vision—as if a great hand covered it all.

Whatever that power was, it was beyond her reach.

She could do nothing but keep watching—keep observing the future.

Taking a deep breath, she raised her hands before her chest.

Click, click, click.

The Eye of Agamotto opened, revealing the glowing Time Stone within.

Light flared brilliantly as she peered once more into what lay ahead.

Moments later, her eyes flew open—filled with shock.

"The future… has become completely obscured!"
