*Chapter 27: The Warning*
Sophia and Alexander decided to lay low for a while, staying in a safe house to avoid any potential danger. But even in hiding, Sophia couldn't shake off the feeling that they were being watched.
One night, as they were settling in for bed, Sophia heard a strange noise coming from outside. She got out of bed and looked out the window, but there was nothing to see.
Suddenly, a piece of paper slipped under the door. Sophia's heart racing, she picked it up and read the message scrawled on it: "You're not safe. Get out while you still can."
Sophia's hands trembled as she showed the note to Alexander. "What does this mean?" she asked.
Alexander's face was grim. "I think it's a warning from my father," he said. "He's trying to intimidate us, to make us back down."
But Sophia knew that they couldn't back down now. They had come too far, and they had to see justice served.
"We need to go to the police," Sophia said. "We need to tell them about the threats and the note."
Alexander nodded. "You're right," he said. "We'll go first thing in the morning."
But as they lay in bed, Sophia couldn't sleep. She was too scared, too worried about what might happen next. And she knew that she wasn't alone. Alexander was scared too, but he was trying to be strong for her.
As the night wore on, Sophia heard another noise outside. This time, it sounded like footsteps. She sat up in bed, her heart racing, and looked at Alexander. "Do you hear that?" she whispered.
Alexander's eyes snapped open, and he nodded. "Stay here," he whispered back. "I'll go check it out."
But Sophia knew that she couldn't just sit there and wait. She had to be brave, had to face whatever was coming their way.
