Chapter 16 - FIRST DAY

Inside the ward, silence lingered—thick and uneasy. One pair of wide human eyes studied seven impossibly perfect beings, while finally lingered on the boy who looked as if he'd stepped straight out of a comic book.

Bella's gaze swept over them all, but it always came back to him. Lucas. With his scarf and hood lowered, his face fully revealed, he seemed almost unreal—mesmerizing, radiant in a way that made her forget to breathe.

Edward noticed her staring, and a sharp sting of jealousy coiled inside him. At the same time, Rosalie's fingers slipped around Lucas's hand, holding on tightly, as if silently declaring "He's mine", her golden eyes narrowing into a glare at Bella.

Bella felt the weight of Rosalie's glare, but instead of backing away, curiosity shimmered in her expression. She was too intrigued to care.

Breaking the heavy atmosphere, Lucas moved closer to her bedside and pulled out the chair nearby. His tone was warm, smooth, and disarming."Hi, Isabelle Marie Swan. My name's Lucas Brightsun, though you already know that."

Bella blinked at the formality, a faint flush coloring her cheeks."Just Bella,is fine" she said quickly, her voice carrying a touch of awkwardness.

Lucas chuckled softly, nodding. "Alright, Bella. So… what did the doctor say? Everything alright?" His asked, though he already knew the answer.

"Yeah," she replied, still a little dazed. "He said I was lucky—nothing serious. I can go home now." Her eyes flicked to Edward, who stood by the door with the others, their quiet voices pitched too low for a normal human ear to catch but they can hear her clearly.

"That's great," Lucas said, offering her a reassuring smile.

But Bella's brow furrowed, her curiosity getting the better of her."Lucas… wasn't Edward standing with you? Then how did he—" she hesitated, her gaze darting between them, "—arrive at my side in a split second? You were right there. You should've seen it."

At her words, the Cullens stiffened. Tension thickened in the room, especially around Edward, whose jaw clenched.

Lucas leaned back slightly, regarding her with calm eyes."Bella, it's good to be curious," he said gently, "but some questions… you should wait to ask the person directly. If he tells you, then it's a fine. If he doesn't, don't force him." He glanced at Edward before looking back at Bella. "What matters is—be grateful. He saved you. Otherwise, on my first day at school, I'd have ended up seeing a dead body."

The dry joke hung in the air, absurd but effective enough to cut the tension. The Cullens shook their heads, a faint smile tugging at some of their lips.

Bella chuckled despite herself, though the spark of curiosity didn't completely fade.

"You're right about that," she admitted softly.

Lucas's smile warmed. "We'll talk again soon—somewhere better than a hospital room. Until then, get well, Bella."

He rose from the chair and walked back toward the Cullens. They greeted him with subtle smiles, their amusement evident.

"That was smoother than telling her she hit her head, Lucas" Alice teased, casting a mischievous look at Edward.

The others chuckled. Edward didn't reply—he simply walked toward Bella, his eyes troubled.

"Let them be. It's time to go," Lisa said, checking her watch. The Cullens nodded in agreement.

Outside, near their cars, they exchanged their goodbyes. Rosalie lingered by Lucas's side, reluctant to part, and wants to give him a ride but refused by him,her hand brushing his as though unwilling to let go.

"Today started good, turned bad, and then—super good," Lucas said with a laugh, gently squeezing Rosalie's hand as he opened her car door. "Go home, get some rest and relax your mind."

"You're right." Her eyes softened as she leaned closer. "Be careful on the road, and text me when you get home."

"I will," Lucas promised with a smile.

Reluctantly, Rosalie slipped into her car. The Cullens departed, and soon after, Lucas hailed a taxi for himself.

Back in the ward, Bella turned to Edward. Instead of pressing him further, she simply whispered a quiet, "Thank you." Edward gave a faint nod, his mind silently thanking Lucas for his timely words.

Later that night, Lucas sat in his chair at home. A smile lingered on his lips. For five whole minutes, he just sat there, whispering a thank you to God—for this second chance at life.

Today, he was happy. For the first time across both his lives, he had found friends. In his first life, loneliness had been his only companion. Orphaned, he had never truly belonged. But now? He had people—friends he wanted to cherish. And most of all, he had her: a girl who would one day be his wife.

His chest swelled with quiet joy. Very happy. Truly happy.Replaying the day's moments in his mind, Lucas finally rose from his chair, still smiling, and walked to the kitchen. Tonight, he'd cook himself a proper dinner—a small celebration for the new life he was building.
