"Commander John," Ava continued, "would you please ensure May's bags are taken to Beta Kade's residence immediately?"
"Of course, Luna." John bowed slightly.
With that done, May found herself walking beside Ava through the fortress gates. Her skin prickled under their stares, but Ava's easy stride beside her offered a shield, an invisible bubble of safety. "Kade tells me you have been doing an exceptional job with Adelita," Ava said.
"Ah…I don't know if I would put it that way. Half the time she drives me crazy. Honestly, I think she's the one doing an exceptional job with me." She rubbed her arm.
Ava threw her head back and laughed. "Oh, Nolan is going to love you," she said as if May had already passed some invisible test.
"Nolan?"
"Oh… my son. He's a few weeks younger than Adelita. We're planning his birthday. Looks like you've arrived just in time for some cake."
May smiled.
"Turns out, I love cake." May said.
