Kade closed his eyes. "I cannot be with you either," he said finally.
May nodded, her lips trembling. "I understand," she said softly. She took a shaky breath and continued, "But that's not why I said that." Her eyes burned into his. "I cannot marry Mark because he isn't the one I am in love with."
The confession knocked the air from his lungs. Kade's body moved before his mind caught up. He reached for her, his big hands trembling as they cupped her face. His thumbs brushed across her damp cheeks, wiping away the evidence of her tears. His forehead nearly touched hers as he whispered, "I wish so hard that things were different for me. I would love you like you wouldn't believe."
