Chapter 33
Xavier
Sitting in my office, I waited. My mind raced with a thousand thoughts, but I focused on one: the elder I'd ordered to be locked up. Normally, I didn't let things get to me. I had learned to keep my emotions in check, to stay calm, even in the face of confrontation. But his words had gotten under my skin, and I'd acted swiftly. Maybe too swiftly. I half-expected his family to come by now, pleading for his release, begging for mercy.
But no one came. Hours passed, and still, no sign of them. It was strange. Usually, when someone was thrown into the cells, their family would rush to negotiate, hoping for leniency. But there was nothing. A small, nagging voice in the back of my mind whispered that maybe I had overreacted. That maybe I should have handled it differently.
