Paul's pov
The day began like any other, filled with the responsibilities of an alpha hosting an inter-pack retreat. The event was designed to foster alliances and teach younger pack members the values of leadership and teamwork. It was a tradition I'd upheld for years, yet today felt different. The usual sense of pride in hosting such a significant gathering was overshadowed by something else, something I wasn't ready to admit to myself.
My focus wasn't on the tasks at hand, nor on the mingling packs or the laughter of children echoing through the camp. Instead, my attention was locked on her.
Pecan.
She was late this morning. It wasn't like her, and the absence hadn't gone unnoticed. I tried not to think about why it bothered me so much. I had responsibilities, a schedule to keep. Leaving without her felt wrong, but waiting felt like an indulgence I couldn't afford. Frustration clouded my judgment, or maybe it was something deeper.
