At the same time Edward was fighting Rex had also encountered his own demon beast to battle and unlike Edward, Rex was fairing better.
Upon encountering the beast Rex immediately unleashed the formations from his body allowing to slither across his surroundings. The only one he kept on himself was earth element formation that would protect him. Along with that he pulled out various talismans as his current main method of quick explosive damage.
Formation were split into 2 types arrays and primordial script. To use arrays one must understand that each element has its own natural distinction to draw power from the world. On the other hand formation created using primordial script draw their power from the cultivator being imbued with power at the moment of their writing.
Flying through the air the appearing as symbols moving towards the beasts were the words for dark, space, light and wind.
Being as aggressive as the other beast it chose to attack Rex sensing the energy contained in the script flying around it but that was a mistake. The hands that attacked him were blocked by a barrier from the earth script still tattooed on his body as an brown earthly glow appeared around him.
At the same time he activated the script for space. Once activated the script began to glow with faint purple glow as the character used in the script changed forming the new word spelling 'prison' trapping the beast. Now that the beast was trapped the 2nd script with a white glow began to overlay the first one. The characters used in this originally spelled 'light' but once it overlaid 'prison' it changed into the word 'absorption' creating a complementary effect but he still had one left to add. The last script he needed to overlay was the script for darkness and despite being devoid of light it still had a managed to have a black glow. Once overlaid the script changed from 'dark' to 'dispersion'.
At this moment in time this was Rex's strongest method for dealing with a single enemy. Once trapped within enemies could not break out thorough brute force alone since the darkness script would disperse the Sencia of attacks allowing the light script to easily absorb the energy and further fuel the barrier.
While still strong at his current level Rex's attack still had downsides the biggest of which being that if he waited until the enemy ran out of power it would take at least an hour assuming he did not run out of Sencia to continue maintaining the formation since it was a script not an array.
With that said he waited until he the beast was no longer recklessly going wild while trapped and entered to quickly finish off the beast so he could go help the others. As he stepped into the prison his hands held various talismans as he was prepared to be attacked the moment he entered.
Instead to his surprise the beast had balled itself up even keeping its arms wrapped around its body ignoring Rex who had just entered.
Seeing this Rex's plan didn't change even if he didn't know what the beast was doing. Holding four talismans in his hand he charged them up with Sencia before sending them flying at the beast.
Multiple explosions rang out but when the smoke cleared the beast had not moved with only its arms damaged as an eerie dark glow began to emit from its body.
"Stupid beast you're wasting your time." Rex was unsure as to what it was doing but he knew it couldn't be good as he began attacking with talismans regardless of the cost. Only after using more than 20 talismans did he stop to see the damage.
What he saw surprised him the beast was still there balled up only now the the energy that had once been covering had vanished along with various wounds covering its body.
Before he Rex could do anything else the beast suddenly emitted a wave of dark energy. Once the energy came into contact with the formation it spread like a fire through eating away at it along with Rex's energy as the one sustaining it.
At the same time Rex could not just focus on maintaining his script as the dark energy was also heading for him. With his focus on defense the script trapping the beast began falling apart as the scripts began returning to Rex's body.
Since the formation had fallen apart he sent out his earth script focused all his Sencia into his earth script creating a barrier to contain the energy and beast. If it wasn't for the fact he was still inside the town and he knew people were hiding inside their homes he would not have attempted but as a disciple of Star Sect this was something he had to do.
As the stalemate continued Rex ended up in a dangerous situation. He was unable to move while focusing all his energy on the barrier but it was slowly being destroyed along with his Sencia reserves. Faced with such a predicament he decided to take a risk and do something he had been failing to do even in practice Mind Dividing.
Rex's earlier move to imprison the beast was done by using a combo script where he could use a predetermined combination of scripts to consistently create the same effect. The benefit to this was that it was strong, easy to use, and would not interfere with each other but it naturally had its downsides. The biggest was that effects could not be modified or changed in an instant to address various situation as he was in now. This is why being able to divided one's consciousness was a necessary skill for script users. By dividing one's mind it meant they could use multiple scripts and adjust them in real time to work flawlessly with each other. If one could not do this they would be limited in their future attainments in the path of formations.
Rex's goal in dividing his mind was to apply the light script to absorb Sencia but not from the attacks like in the combo script because that required the aid of the darkness script. Instead he wanted to modify the properties of the absorption to absorb the Sencia in the surrounding and apply it onto the earth script. If he did this without modifying the original script in the best case nothing would happen but in the worst case applying to the earth script would disrupt its natural flow and cause it to self destruct.
As Rex was attempting to divide his mind blood began flowing out of his nose and eyes as the attempt was causing a huge strain on his brain along with still having to maintain the barrier.
His first attempt ended in failure but the strain was still tolerable.
His second attempt got him closer but still resulted in him failing as felt the world around him distorting.
His third attempt was the worst by far falling to his knee just barely maintaining the barrier through sheer will. At this time a healing pill he had gotten from Vera appeared in his mouth as his body quickly recovered but the strain on his mind could not so easily be healed.
On his fourth attempt he got close to succeeding but failed in the end and almost completely blacked out but manged to hang on.
He wanted to make his fifth attempt but knew this was his last chance if he failed he would almost assuredly be dead. He thought about giving up on the people of the town and temporarily retreating but to do so was the coward's way out.
Before his fifth attempt he began boisterously laughing as this was what he imagined he would be doing when he joined Star Sect. He enjoyed following the path of formations but this he enjoyed even more the thrill of overcoming his limits in a dangerous situation.
"Just wait you stupid beast you'll die soon!" He shouted before his next attempt.
On his fifth attempt he finally figured out he was doing wrong dividing your mind did not mean to completely divide it in half since the toll would be to great. No what it meant was to cut off a sliver of your mind that you could assign specific duties.
Once he figured this out he immediately did it but the actual act of cutting away a piece of mind to separate it from the main one was still an incredibly painful and delicate task. As he felt a piece of his mind being cut of the pain was excruciating but his grin was just as big because he feel this would work. Pushing through the pain he finally succeeded although the sensation of having a second mind was still new and odd to him he immediately put it to work.
He assigned the light script to this piece of his mind and the light script immediately flew from this body onto the earth script. 'Absorption' was quickly modified to apply to absorb the natural Sencia and applied to the 'Barrier' with no issues.
At this point Rex's Sencia was about to bottom out since he was not blessed nor did he have a body like others able contain enormous amounts of Sencia. Still now he could keep what he channeled to a minimum as the light script was doing most of the work.
With the upper hand Rex focused on maintaining the barrier since the beast would no longer be able to overwhelm him in terms of Sencia.
After five more minutes the energy finally disappeared as what was left behind was a beast on the verge of death having expended all its energy. With that being the case Rex took out multiple talismans and explosion soon rang out. This time once the smoke cleared all that was left was chunks of a corpse.
Seeing that Rex finally relaxed and began to shout into the sky, "Master you useless piece of garbage teach me better!"
Although he blamed his master for not teaching him whether she was actually at fault was an entirely different matter.
