Chapter 35 - Chapter 34:Mutation pills

From what Fai knew, People could have any type of mutation yes, based on the mutation pill they consumed it would be formed.

But wasn't it meant to be elemental? His confusion only began to pike up ... not like he knew much about Mutants to begin with, apart from the war and sone other minor details, not much was said about mutation in school, and Fai ignored why.

Then came the question of how Johnson came to have this specific mutation power.

From what Fai knew, for mutation pills to be made, it must have been studied to perfection, but how do you study something you didn't even know existed.

In all just to say that Fai was curious of how Johnson had aquire his mutation.

"If I may ask," Fai said, his curiosity finally spilling over, "how did you get that kind of mutation?"

Johnson raised an eyebrow, then grinned slightly. "It's cool, right? I'm guessing you'd want to have it too?"

Fai didn't smile. He shook his head honestly.

"Not really. I'm just curious. From what I know, mutation pills are what transform normal humans into mutants.

And to make a pill, scientists need to study a mutant who already possesses that specific ability.

But I've never heard of anyone with a mutation like Blink before. No record, no report, nothing. So how did they even make the pill that gave you your power?"

Johnson stared at him quietly for a moment, then smiled again, wider this time. There was amusement in his eyes, like Fai had just asked a question he had been waiting for all along.

"I see what you're getting at," Johnson said. "You're thinking, if no one else has this mutation, that must mean I'm the first, right?"

"Exactly," Fai replied. "But that doesn't make sense. The energy that caused the first mutations entered our world fifty years ago. You don't even look seventeen. Sixteen, maybe. So how are you possibly the first?"

Fai was clearly frustrated. He wasn't accusing Johnson of lying, but his logical mind just couldn't fit the pieces together.

Seeing his frustration only made Johnson smile more. It was a mystery to Fai, and he hated being left in the dark.

"What's so funny?" Fai asked, narrowing his eyes.

"Nothing," Johnson replied quickly, brushing it off. "Look, I'll explain how I got my powers. But before that, there's something you need to understand."

He took a breath, growing serious.

"You see, the science behind mutations doesn't work like physics or math. It doesn't follow a fixed set of formulas or predictable rules. In physics, you can use the same formula to calculate density anywhere, and it will always be correct. No matter what changes around it, the formula stays the same."

Johnson paused to make sure Fai was still following.

"But when it comes to mutations," he continued, "nothing is absolute. There are no guarantees. No fixed rules. It's unpredictable. If you try to box it into scientific laws, you'll never fully understand it. You have to think outside the usual lines."

Fai listened intently, trying to process what Johnson was saying. It sounded strange, even contradictory. After all, wasn't science supposed to be about logic and certainty?

'What does he mean by "nothing is certain"?' Fai wondered. If mutations couldn't be explained through logical rules, then what did that make them? Random miracles?

Sensing Fai's internal conflict, Johnson decided to clarify.

"What I'm trying to say is, you need to have an open mind. Now, to answer your question about how I got my mutation."

"There are two types of mutation pills," Johnson said, lifting two fingers. "The Certain Mutation Pill and the Random Mutation Pill."

Fai's eyes narrowed. This was new information.

"The pill you were given before this assessment? That was a Certain Mutation Pill. It's made by studying a specific mutant, analyzing their core, then replicating it in pill form. The result? You get a guaranteed ability, whatever the pill was designed for."

Johnson paused and continued, "But there's another type, one that's not widely distributed. The Random Mutation Pill. As the name suggests, it gives you a mutation completely at random. No guarantee, no known outcome. You could become incredibly powerful… or end up with nothing useful at all."

Fai's eyes widened slightly. He had never heard of such a thing. If it existed, it had been kept far from the public's knowledge—or maybe only shared with a few privileged individuals.

"So wait…" Fai said slowly. "You're saying Blink came from a random pill?"

"Exactly," Johnson confirmed. "I didn't inherit this power from anyone. No one studied it. I took a Random Mutation Pill and this is what I got."

Fai stared at him in disbelief. "But why would anyone take something like that? The risks…"

"Are massive," Johnson finished. "I know. But for some people, the chance to get something rare, something no one else has, is worth the risk. You might end up with an ability nobody can counter… or you might end up with something useless. Or worse, unstable."

"Isn't that dangerous?" Fai asked, clearly unsettled.

"Extremely," Johnson replied. "That's why most people stick to the Certain Pills. Safer, predictable, and controlled. But those Random ones? They're for people willing to gamble."

Fai was quiet for a moment, then finally asked, "Where did you even get one of those pills? I've never heard of them being distributed publicly."

Johnson gave a short laugh. "Yeah, you won't find them on the public market. The government doesn't hand those out. They're either restricted, black-market, or part of secret experiments. Let's just say… I had connections."

That only raised more questions in Fai's mind, not only did John son seem to know more about mutation, he seemed to be well informed than a regular student should be,and now he also had connections? 'Who is This guy? ' , but for now, he didn't press.

Johnson added, "And if you're wondering why you've never heard of Blink before, it's probably because no one else has gotten it yet. Random pills produce abilities that sometimes can't be duplicated. At least not immediately. Scientists would have to study my core and break it down if they wanted to create a Certain Pill from it."

Fai was stunned. The system, the science, the rules he had understood—were not rules at all. Just guidelines. Loose ones at that. He had entered the maze thinking he knew how the world of mutations worked. But now, it felt like the ground beneath his feet had shifted.

"So… you're saying that a random pill could produce anything?" he asked.

"Anything," Johnson confirmed. "You might get something elemental. You might get something like mine. Or you might get nothing at all. Some people don't even survive the transformation."

Fai swallowed hard. The more he learned about this world, the less certain everything became.

"But hey," Johnson said, changing the tone, "you don't need to worry about that. You've got your own path. One way or another, you'll awaken something—just make sure it's something you can control."

Fai gave a slow nod, absorbing the weight of the conversation. Johnson's power wasn't just rare, it was unpredictable, unreplicable, and maybe even dangerous. Yet it also gave him an edge, something that couldn't be copied or countered easily.

And for the first time since entering the maze, Fai began to realize that this world wasn't just about power, it was also about risk.
