Chapter 5 - ACQUAINTANCE?

"Yo!" Water's loud boisterous vice rung out in the wide space of the academy library's ground floor. Aryan lifted his head from between pages of the book he was reading to watch the blue-skinned demon waltz his way to his seat a huge grin on his luminescent face.

"Why aren't you in class?" Aryan questioned unable to help the display of his annoyance on his face at the other's presence. Water huffed taking his seat in front of Aryan and completely ignoring Aryan's deathly look. "And you don't have class? Why are you always here?" he asked back instead.

Aryan's eyes narrowed at the blue demon. "What makes you so sure I'm always here?" he asked instead. Water shrugged, managing to completely mask his short panic with the casual gesture. "Just a guess" he muttered picking up the round yellow fruit that had been sitting on the table in front of Aryan.

"Keep your hands to yourself!" Aryan growled snatching the fruit back so quickly Water didn't have time to process the action. His eyes widened in response at last and he stared at the back of the exiting Aryan. 'Damn....'

* * * *

Aryan's brow lifted in a show of disbelief as he was met with the sight of Water seated in his usual booth upon entering the library. Two plates of cake and cups of tea sat in front of him, one for himself and the other presumably for Aryan.

Aryan wasn't interested though and he made that very obvious by straight up ignoring the blue demon. Walking into the place, he went to pick up the book he wanted, checked it out then left. He was completely oblivious to the mischievous glint and unsettling smirk on Water's face as the demon watched him leave.

The same thing happened the next day and the day after that and the day after that until eventually, four days had passed and Aryan really wanted to get his library time back.

"What do you want?" Aryan demanded, his hands slamming down on the table gently, not loud enough to make excess noise but enough to draw the blue demon's attention.

Water looked up at Aryan, his ever present smirk on his face as he lifted one questioning brow. "What's up half demon?" he asked with the intention of taunting Aryan. Aryan was, however, not that sensitive about what we was but he was aware that the academy was actively trying to hide him from the rest of the school and figured it wouldn't be too great to be called that out loud in uncertain grounds such as the building for regular students.

His eyes narrowed sending Water a warning message. "Why are you so hung up on pestering me?" he asked going straight to the point. Water stared at him for a short moment feeling amused. "How are you so sure I've been trying to pester you?" he replied throwing Aryan's words right back at him.

Aryan grit his teeth. 'Why is this creature so annoying? I've been obvious enough, why can't he just take a hint?!' he exclaimed already throwing hands up in his mind. His eyes travelled down to look at the multiple empty plates that once had cake in them. No sign that the demon had been reading.

"Don't you have any place better o sit around eating cake?" he enunciated each word with great annoyance. Water's smirk widened, very much enjoying the reaction his next words were going to elicit from Aryan.

"No. As a matter of fact, the library is one of the best places to lounge around and waste time in. The smell of old books give a much desired lulling effect" he replied confidently spouting rubbish because he knew how naïve Aryan actually was when it came to social opinions.

Aryan's brows furrowed as he processed what the demon had said. He could agree with the fact that the scent of books and homey feel of the library were of great comfort even to him who didn't know what counted as a home. He wouldn't want to deprive anyone of that feeling especially since he knew nothing about them. 'But his presence keeps disrupting my studying, I can't possibly compromise on that. The next solaroid happens in three weeks and I'm yet to learn all there is to know about it-'

"-ey! Hey!" Water's voice drew him out of his thoughts and he looked down at the blue demon, now realizing that at some point he had begun to stare at the ceiling. His mismatched eyes stared directly into Water's blue ones making him flinch.

"Don't stare too hard okay?" he muttered letting out a nervous chuckle as he tried to mask his panic with a casual attitude. Aryan pursed his lips but said nothing only raising up a brow.

"Why don't we just become friends?" he asked now smiling, a plan forming in his mind already. Aryan's expression went blank immediately as he stared straight at Water, eyes dead cold. Water's hackles rose and the hair on the back f his rose as a strong feeling of danger assaulted his nerves. His hands instantly rose in a surrendering gesture as cold sweat ran down his back.

"We can just be acquaintances! Familiar enough for you to tolerate me!" he quickly exclaimed in a desperation to mediate the situation. Aryan's ice cold gaze instantly warmed up. He folded his hands, his eyes going up to look at the shelves as he appeared to be considering the proposal.

"Elaborate" he finally spoke making Water relax. Letting out a breath of relief, the blue demon proceeded to explain. "An acquaintance is someone you simply acknowledge. You aren't anything special to each other and you're not obligated to share things with each other. You are, however, able to tolerate each other as you are okay with the other"

Aryan nodded slowly in response. "Doing that will allow me enjoy my library time despite your presence huh?" he muttered to himself. Water's lips curved into a shaky smirk as he suppressed his deep hatred for the mixed race teenager.

'The end result is all that matters Water. Getting my hands dirty shouldn't matter' he thought, the crooked curve of his lips masking the disgust he felt on the inside. He stretched out one blue hand, his smirk now more confident.

"Acquaintance?"

Aryan's gaze lingered on the hand for only a moment before he stretched out his own hands to accept the handshake.

"Acquaintance".
