Chapter 31 - Nonsensical Jealousy

Ruan Chanchan raised her head and looked at the little mer who was running towards her. At first, everything seemed normal; however, when she looked at Ruan Zeqiu, she saw that there were many injuries on his arms and scratches on his face. When Ruan Chanchan saw the injuries on the face of her little brother, she felt her heart lurch in her throat.

Don't tell her that this mer went ahead and fought with Daddy Zhou! She had already taught a lesson to that mer; there was no need for Ruan Zeqiu to sacrifice that pretty face of his.

"What happened to you?" Because Ruan Chanchan was worried about Ruan Zeqiu, she completely forgot about her pretense of acting as a fool.

At first, Ruan Zeqiu didn't sense anything wrong. However, two seconds later, his eyes lit up, and he rushed towards Ruan Chanchan, flushed with excitement. He said to her, "Sister, you—you are really getting better!"

When others told him that Ruan Chanchan had fought back vociferously, he thought that they were all lying to him because they wanted to protect Daddy Zhou, but now that he had heard and seen his sister care for him, he was so excited that his eyes turned red.

His sister was finally getting normal.

Oops, thought Ruan Chanchan when she heard the remark of the little mer. In her worry, she completely forgot about acting like a fool; fortunately, she didn't say anything more, or else the situation would have turned even more chaotic.

Ruan Chanchan didn't want to make things any worse, so she immediately fell silent and then pointed to the wounds that were on Ruan Zeqiu's face and questioned, "What?"

When Ruan Zeqiu saw that his sister had stopped speaking, the light in his eyes dimmed at once. However, he still held some hope in his heart. Since his sister was able to say a sentence, one day she would be able to speak normally as well! He just needed to continue holding on!

The curve of his lips lifted once again, and Ruan Zeqiu said to Ruan Chanchan, "It's nothing, sister. I fell a bit when I was trying to get the flame fruit." As he spoke, he turned his body to the side and then rummaged in the small bag made from leaves that he was carrying on the side.

"Here, your favourite," he said as he thrust the fruit that he brought back for Ruan Chanchan.

Ruan Chanchan swallowed hard as she looked down at the fruit that Ruan Zeqiu had given to her. Even though she had eaten lots of fruits in her past life, for some reason, this fruit, which looked like a melon except that it was bright orange with hues of warm yellow that shimmered under the light like gold, looked more delicious than anything she had ever eaten in her life.

"...Thank you," she said to Ruan Zeqiu, whose lips curved up into an even wider smile. He then said to Ruan Chanchan, "Let's go. You haven't eaten anything, right? I will break it open for you. You can eat it."

He then brought Ruan Chanchan inside the cave before taking a small rock that was sitting on the side of the cave and smashing the fruit open on the short raised platform inside the cave.

Then, without keeping even a single piece for himself, he handed it all to Ruan Chanchan before saying to her, "Here, sister. Eat it."

Ruan Chanchan looked at the fruit in Ruan Zeqiu's hand and then raised her head to look at the mer who was smiling at her.

"What are you waiting for?" When Ruan Zeqiu saw that Ruan Chanchan was not reaching out to take the fruit that he had broken, he frowned and urged his sister, thinking that she needed a little more push.

Sure enough, just like always, Ruan Chanchan reached out and took the fruit from his hand when he pushed her a little. Except that she didn't take the entire thing. No, she only took half of it and then left the rest in Ruan Zeqiu's hand.

"What's this? You are not hungry?" Ruan Zeqiu frowned with a deep furrow between his brows. "Should I keep it? But it will go bad. The weather is so hot; how can we keep it for long?" He knew that his sister was rather fond of this fruit and would like to keep it as long as she could, but Ruan Zeqiu didn't think that they had the option to do so.

"You eat."

"What?" Ruan Zeqiu was sure that he had misheard something. There was no way that his sister, who was obsessed with this fruit and would attack anyone as long as they tried to snatch it from her, would ask him to eat the fruit with her.

However, Ruan Chanchan raised her head and looked at him before repeating, "You eat." Ruan Zeqiu had to believe that his sister was really asking him to share her food with him!

Even though this was something that a four-year-old would be able to do, Ruan Zeqiu knew very well how much this meant for Ruan Chanchan and him. This meant that she was getting better and was no longer the same age as a two- or three-year-old.

"Of...of course, I will eat it," Ruan Zeqiu said as he wiped his eyes with his arm and then started eating the fruit.

Ruan Chanchan watched him when he was not paying attention, and heaved a sigh of relief. Fortunately, the mer was not questioning her rapid recovery, or else she would be in a hell of a lot of trouble.

The two siblings finished eating the flame fruit, and it was a good thing that they did because that night, Ruan Zeqiu didn't get any meat from the tribe. The reason was that he didn't go to hunt with the warriors. Even though they said that, Ruan Chanchan knew that it was just because some of the warriors were jealous of him.

"You…"
