In a palace where everyone is valued based on their position, Reginald is rather unlucky. Conceived out of wedlock while his mother was still in her father's castle, there is a strife on both sides. His maternal side never accepting him for being an ornament of shame, and his paternal side never accepting him, making him an illegitimate child and never believing his paternity, carving him into a bastard. His father decides to crown his mother queen and he; crown prince hoping everyone will be convinced and quiet on the whole matter, but a crown is not enough to cover a scandal that huge. But once dejected by his own father-in-law then accepted , Reginald has learnt that the crown makes the prince.Being human, he succumbs. The court will never allow a bastard lead them. They connive with one of the most promising consort , and try to pull Reginald down using intimidation and several attempted murders. They plan another amateur assassination where he almost lost his life to a bullet , but he is rescued by the penine moorland inhabitants. This is where he meets an apothecary who changes his life forever. Meet Charlotte Brumble, a young and aspiring orphan apothecary living with her grandmother in the quiet poor Ramsbottom . Acquiring her knowledge from her late grandfather who once served in the castle as a professional medical official. Bearing a rather unfriendly experience, from a young age, Charlotte has been molded into an unfeeling person, and has no time for vain worries except for money of course. She bears the plague of an unfortunate, possessed crazy girl, running mad as a result of too much knowledge for a girl her calibre. Charlotte meets Reginald unaware of his status, they bond as friends. Reginald knowing who is responsible for his assassination sets to find evidence and on doing that he returns to the castle and the culprits face justice. Because of this, the penine moorlands loses its patriarch, and grand prince Mason Reginald's younger brother is sent to substitute for the vacant space until the best person for the post is found. Mason receives a bill requesting for a clinic in Rivington as the only clinic in Alston is too far. He makes that his first task, but before that, uses the patriarchal infirmary as a clinic in the mean time. And makes Charlotte the doctor. Reginald pays a visit, to see his brother and the clinic in construction. He is beyond pleased to see Charlotte. They get along as they used to and he tells her his predicaments. Noticing the closeness between the two, Mason digs into Charlotte's background for security reasons and discovers she is the daughter of the royal medical officer who was to conduct a paternity test on Reginald as he was born, but got kicked out immediately for an accusation big enough to end him.He confronts Charlotte and she denies knowing anything about paternity tests. Reginald has his fears as well; 'what if he isn't a Gratel?'. Mason brings her into the castle by force. But she doesn't carry out the test, instead she assists the royal doctor who is thrilled at her intelligence.Mason is smitten and drawn in, but Charlotte ignores him, he accepts his fate. Charlotte becomes the bridge between Reginald and his wife who have experienced unrequited love on both sides. She realizes Reginald is going through a whole lot after seeing him tear out, she finds compassion within her and does the test without his consent The tension in the Grand palace increases as the fate of every one depends on the result of the test. Chapter 1 - Charlotte Brumble

Dearest esteemed reader,

I am Charlotte Brumble. A girl of course, aged twenty three... and about to be many more.

My life is almost interesting, so I will be allowing you a read of my adventures in the castle and just before I got in the castle.

An orphan girl living with her grandma In the cold northern parts of England; the penine moorlands where we all rot except for those who live in the Alston moors.

Not everyone likes me, especially the girls in my village. Maybe because I have an 'evil spirit' ...Iknow... crazy people. Well, I have neither an evil spirit, nor demons (which honestly we all do have our demons). I'm just really honest you see, and I bet you I wasn't honest enough yet. And...my patriarch doesn't really appreciate that.

Granny use to enjoy the thrill... but these days when she's just too old for fun, she berates me.

Ilike tit-for-tat ; you do to me I do to you... sometimes I even do more than you did to me, but it's still fair game... after all 'you' did to me. No I am not scary, but I love insects, and most of the time, you can find scorpions in my bag. Good old 'Asberg' . Yup, my bag has a name, it's a pun if you look at it nicely; 'Asberg' - 'as-bag' ??...no, that sounds horrible, I never thought of it until now... what in the world... All the same.

I've never had a 'courtie' like the girls call it, which is a man who asks you to wear a big, heavy dress and attend a gala with him. You both can later get married... that's if you do not piss each other off. Nope I've never had that, simply because I've never been able to afford a dress. Well it's honestly because I hate gatherings of people, and I can't dance. Iam not ashamed. This made me turn all my prospective courters down, and yes... they stopped asking, as planned!!

Granny advised me to join the nunnery, but nah... I like to walk as I want and not slow and steady as nuns. And basically, I do not believe in god. How can one believe in what they haven't seen??. The father calls it 'faith' (scoff), I call it fart. Cause... The Holy spirit impregnated a person's wife? .... unfair if you ask me.

What then do I want?, you might ask... it's a good question. I wanted to be; a scientist. Is that too much?, to me NO.

The king pays them well and they are respected by all, and people can see them even (you thinking what I am thinking?).

But I have to travel to so many regions to acquire the knowledge as well as the skills, I hadn't even gone to school yet. Butttt...grandfather was a scientist in his early days, and worked in the royal infirmary, then he got framed and was kicked out. Unfair if you ask me.

He taught me all he knew (except patience) and gave me his books, told me stories about his journey to; Africa, Asia, America, and even the big bad ice bed; Antarctica, where he met penguins. I love my grandfather a lot. He died seven years ago.

I am also very suspicious of everything and everyone, except insects. I love insects, so honest and pure.they never pretend and will never backbite (that should be a pun), they do it upfront. Unlike humans who betray everyone, because they are scared to die, grow old, be poor, get sick or... humans are sick!!.

I had no friends, just my granny who is old and barely locomotive. I vowed to never have any friends...let me tell you how my parents died; a selfish friend of my father poisoned them both when I was only eight... bastard!!

I am a thief as well, to be honest, I've stolen once or twice...or a lot of times, and granny made me return all of it (dry chuckle), actually no... she doesn't always know.

I may not be beautiful, or have the roundest breast, or the thinnest waist, but I am intelligent, and if it's not good enough for you, it's good enough for me!!!
