Chapter 1 - 1

1330 The god-talkers forecast a mild Dark season.

The pig-herder Enastakos left his grave every night to demand food from his family. We held a ceremony at Enastakos's grave, imploring his revenant to join our honored ancestors in the afterlife and trouble his family no more. The grave grumbled, then fell silent. That night, Enastakos remained in the earth, and his family ate dinner in peace for the first time in weeks.

Kagradus of the Enhyli came seeking our help in a raid against the Blue Jays. "The Blue Jay storehouses are like a tantalizing fruit, ripe for the picking" said Kagradus. Instead of sending warriors, we sacrificed to Kagradus's war god. The Enhyli clan had good fortune on its raid, and generously rewarded us for our part in their success. Women found a talking fox in our woods. It wanted us to make an agreement not to hunt foxes or clear more forest. We told the any fox that we would not hunt its kin. The fox said that this would satisfy the spirits of its ancestors, but not the tree spirits.

Aransanda, a trader of the Vanstali clan, warned us to be wary of another trader, Asborn of the Wildcat clan. We sent a party to beat some sense into perfidious Asborn. They found him and struck him until he bled and begged for mercy. The people were glad to hear that Aransanda's enemy was so decisively laid low.
