Jason sat at a quiet corner table in a small café, nursing a cup of coffee while waiting for his guest. The bell above the door chimed, and a woman slipped inside, scanning the room before making her way to him. She sat down without a word—then glanced to Jason's right, spotting another woman sitting there, sipping tea.
Even without the colorful pigtails and her usual chaos, the sharp eyes gave her away.Harley Quinn—disguised.
"Hello… Caitlin," Jason greeted.
"Hi." She extended her hand. "You must be Jason, right? Jason Anderson?"
Jason shook her hand with a small smile. "Yup, that's me."
"So it's true—you wanted to recruit me?"
"Yes," Jason said without hesitation. "Your powers are remarkable, and your story is… interesting. You're not inherently evil like the ones I kill."
At that, Caitlin let out a small breath of relief.
"Ha! Jason, I think she thought you were here to kill her!" Harley grinned.
"Well… yeah," Caitlin admitted quickly. "All I hear in the news is that you're some merciless killer of villains."
"I am," Jason replied evenly. "But not all villains. Only the irredeemable ones—the ones who kill, maim, or rape for fun, only to get out and do it again. Are you one of them, Caitlin?"
She shook her head immediately. "No! No… I just… robbed a few banks because I needed money."
"Why?" he asked plainly.
"Huh?" She blinked, caught off guard.
"Why did you need the money so badly?" he repeated.
Her gaze dropped to the table. "I'm… a freak. At least, that's what people see. But I'm also a scientist. I needed the money to keep researching. To… heal myself."
Jason's eyes softened, though his voice stayed steady. "For one, I don't see you as a freak. You have a gift, Caitlin—a powerful one. And it can be used for good. But I'm not here to force that on you."
He leaned forward slightly. "Instead, I'm making you an offer."
Her eyes flicked up. "What kind of offer?"
"Work for me. As Killer Frost, you'll help my team take down dangerous villains. In your downtime, as Caitlin Snow, you'll work in a fully equipped lab that I'll personally fund for you—plus a high salary. What do you say?"
She stared at him, almost not believing it. "Wait—you'd really do that for me? A personal lab? For me? And all I have to do is fight alongside you? As a hero?"
"Yes. Pretty much it."
"Then yes! I want to. Thank you—this… this means more than you know."
"No problem." Jason slid a sleek black card across the table, the address embossed in silver. "See you next week, Caitlin."
...
"That was sooo cool!" Harley bounced in her seat like an excited kid. "Is that how you felt when you recruited me? Just radiating that cool aura of 'I've got unlimited money'?"
Jason let out a long sigh. "No, Harley. I recruit people to make our team better. Not just by offering endless amounts of money."
"But you do use endless money," she shot back.
"Yes. I do," he admitted flatly.
"So, uhm… how about…" she started, but Jason cut her off.
"No. She's a biochemical terrorist who's killed a lot of people. No, I will not hire Poison Ivy."
"Not even for me?" Harley leaned in with wide puppy eyes.
"Not until I see genuine improvement from Ivy," he said firmly.
"Pleeease!" she whined, dragging the word out.
Then she leaned even closer, dropping her voice into a mischievous whisper. "I can suck it."
Jason didn't even flinch. "I'll consider it," he replied, completely flat, as if the offer had zero effect on him.
...
Wonder Woman sat at a quiet corner table, waiting for her guests. Three seats were empty—until Oliver and Dinah walked in together.
"You're not exactly the 'let's hang out' type, Princess," Oliver quipped as he sat down. "What changed?"
Dinah gave Diana a polite greeting before taking her seat. A few moments later, Arthur strode in, slightly out of breath."Apologies," he said. "As you know, I do have a kingdom to run." He sat down with a faint smirk.
All four were in casual clothes—no armor, no weapons—just themselves.
"So," Dinah began, "why are we here, Diana?"
Diana sighed before speaking. "I wanted to discuss the League's… current problem. Specifically, the issue of Jason Anderson."
The moment his name left her lips, the air shifted.
"Clark, Bruce, Barry, Hal, even J'onn—I know where they all stand," she continued. "Their minds are set. They believe what they do is right. And I agree they do good work… but I have a problem with how they handle certain villains."
"Diana!" Dinah's voice rose. "Jason Anderson is a killer! Do you understand that?"
"Yes," Diana answered evenly. "But so was Oliver when he first started. So is Arthur when he executes traitors in Atlantis. And so am I—I have killed hundreds in past wars."
"That's different, Diana!" Oliver shot back. "I was a different man then. You killed Nazis! And Arthur is a king! That's not the same as a superhero's role."
"Is it really so different?" she countered. "Nazis were irredeemable trash who slaughtered millions. We have villains just like that today—a clown who murders, tortures, and maims an entire city every time he escapes Arkham. And every time, we trust Batman to throw him back in a cell, believing this time he'll get better. Surely!" Her voice dripped with sarcasm.
"Each of us here has faced them—villains we know will never change, who will always seek to ruin lives. And yet we let them live, over and over again."
"Killing them…" Dinah said quietly. "It's wrong, Diana."
"Why?" Diana asked sharply. "Why is it wrong? Could you look a grieving family in the eye and tell them: 'Yes, the villain who murdered your loved one—who has killed fifty others and escaped prison four times—is back in custody, and surely this time he'll change'? Could you honestly say that?"
Dinah said nothing.
"I couldn't," Diana continued. "Because I know the only real closure they'd get is if I brought them that villain's head and dropped it at their feet."
Her gaze swept the table. "And deep down… I think you agree with me. That's why I chose to talk to you, and not the others."
"...Shit," Oliver muttered, leaning back in his chair. "When you put it like that…" He exhaled slowly. "But people can change. I've seen it happen."
Arthur spoke up next, his voice calm but firm. "Even so—do you believe a man who's murdered, destroyed lives, and shattered any chance of peace deserves that redemption? I'm not fully convinced, but I am with Diana on this one. Some of our enemies—some of these monsters—don't deserve the luxury of a second chance… even if it could make them better people."
Dinah stayed silent, her expression unreadable.
Oliver's eyes narrowed. "Fine. Let's say you're both right. What do we do about it? Are we supposed to trust a kid like Jason to decide who lives and dies? Who's worth saving and who's not? Are we making him our god now?"
Diana's gaze didn't waver. "The 'kid' you speak of had the chance to kill Superman—and chose not to. He admires both Superman and Batman. He's as much a hero as any of us… but unlike us, he isn't afraid to step beyond the comfort of that title. He didn't settle for just jailing evil—he's trying to end it."
Dinah finally broke her silence. "Are you saying… you want to support Jason Anderson?"
"Yes," Diana said without hesitation. "Support him, and advise him. His path may be thorny, but I believe it's the right one. And if we're there to guide him, to make sure he stays on course—don't you think we could do more good than what we're doing now?"
Her question hung in the air, heavy and unavoidable—embedding itself in each of their minds.
