Serein pressed her lips together, hastily slipping her jacket on as if it were armor. She strode across the room, her pace quick and restless, desperate to flee the sharp glint in Zane's eyes before it could pin her to the wall.
A quiet laugh slipped from him. His hand lowered, fingers brushing against a photograph resting on the desk.
He lifted it into the light spilling through the bedroom, revealing a still image extracted from the concert broadcast. The girl in the picture wore a mask, but the outfit matched Serein's down to the last detail.

His voice was steady, neither rushed nor languid, even as Serein's steps brought her close to the door. He paused, allowing the weight of his words to settle before continuing.
"A Guide appeared on stage to stabilize him. Ash-gray jacket. Ripped jeans at the knees. Short black hair brushing the chin."
