Kai stood beneath the flickering corridor light, clicking his tongue as he rubbed the tip of his nose, reddened from the blow of Serein's grocery bag. Still, he crouched down, picking up the scattered items one by one and placing them back into the crinkled plastic bag.
Serein's heart was pounding relentlessly inside her chest. Her breath came ragged, heavy with lingering terror. It felt as if she had just stared death in the face and stumbled back alive.
"What in the world are you doing?" All of that fear, with nowhere else to go, broke apart into irritation. She snapped at him, eyes wide with a mixture of anger and disbelief.
After tucking the last item into the bag, Kai straightened, shuffled closer, and blinked innocently. "Picking up your things."
"That is not what I asked." Serein inhaled deeply, restraining the urge to strike that fiery red head before her. "Why on earth were you trailing behind me like that?"
