Anna stared at Aidan, her mouth agape, guilt rising fast and hot in her chest.
"You… seriously? You were sleeping on the couch this whole time?"
Aidan gave a sheepish nod, his usual lopsided grin tugging at the corner of his lips.
Embarrassment flushed across her face like a slap. How had she not realized? All this time, and he hadn't said a word.
"I'm so sorry, Aidan, I didn't know and I know that was bad of me. I should have known you were not…I figured it was a…."
"It's okay, Anna. Because we're married doesn't give me the right to share a bed with you. It's just a marriage on paper after all."
Silence filled the air, as the word settled heavily between them.
It was just a marriage on paper after all.
She looked down at her hands, her fingers curling into the blanket. "I feel terrible. I can't believe I didn't even notice. You… you must think I'm heartless." Her voice trembled as her guilt turned sharp.
