She tried to keep her mood up with Daniel.
However, once she entered into her house, she felt the heaviness push down on her shoulders. The smile and ease on her face disappeared into blankness.
Exhaustion overcame her.
Just as she wanted to go to her room and sleep through the long day, Jude's voice stopped her in her steps.
"Samuel called me earlier and said that you ran out with your boyfriend. What type of behavior is that?
After all, Samuel took you there to meet his friends, and that boyfriend of yours— Emma, I get that you're willful. However, he is too unseemly. You need to grow up."
The anger slowly began to rise in her veins.
Her sharp eyes shot towards the woman.
"Do you actually care about me or are you pretending to?" A sneer made its way on to Emma's face.
Hurt flashed through Jude's eyes. "How can you say that?"
"You didn't want me, right? If you don't like me, you don't have to pretend to want me."
This brought Emma back to a memory she forced herself to forget.
At the age of seven, she ran into her parents sharing an argument. The scared Emma hid herself well and peeked her head through the open door to see the scene inside.
Jude pushed her dad back, saying, "I didn't want that child! Simply looking at her face disgusts me! I want to strangle her and get rid of her! Why did I have to give birth to her!? I never wanted to have her in the first place!"
The seven year old was heartbroken after hearing the following words. A couple years later, Jude gradually converted to gain this loving image of a woman who cared about her family.
Emma kept the memory hidden, treating it like her illusion.
How could her mom not want her?
"Emma, how could you say that? I was advising you for your own good. You're too hostile to your mother," Jude said in disapproval.
Unable to control her emotions, Emma's eyes darkened, and she exclaimed, "You should have aborted me if you hated me that much. Who asked you to give birth to me?"
If only she wasn't born, she wouldn't have to fall victim to these all.
Jude's head spun at her loud words, and she stumbled. But Emma didn't care about her, turning her back and walking into her room. She slammed the door harshly behind her.
Diving into the bed, Emma's chest felt suffocated with all the frustrations within her.
She wished there was someone whom she could talk to, ask for advise, and rely on, but in the end, she felt all alone.
Ellie was a good friend, but she never experienced any troubles growing up. Emma wished it remains that way.
As for her dad, he was already concerned enough about her. She couldn't burden him further.
And Daniel...
Even before her rebirth, she never had a heart to heart discussion with him. After her family went bankrupt, most of her emotions converted to shame and inferiority.
To her, it seemed everyone's eyes silently let her know how she wasn't suitable for being with Daniel. Maybe, deep down she understood this well and therefore, she maintained her arrogance.
She acted as though her life went well, and even though her mom had sold her to be tortured, when she returned to Daniel, she pretended her life was going fine.
Although she loved him, it was as though Daniel happened to be her worst enemy.
Anyone can watch her crumble and be desolate, but Daniel couldn't.
She always maintained her last bit of pride in front of him.
Emma sighed.
A curious part of her wondered how Daniel would react upon finding out about her death.
°°°
Standing in the police station, Daniel was in a disheveled state. The top button of his wrinkled shirt was undone, and the tie laid casually around the neck. His hair was ruffled as dark circles settled under his eyes.
He slammed his hand on the table and stated, "You are simply trying to sweep this matter underneath the rug. Emma won't commit suicide."
His eyes glared at the police officers.
The police officer sighed and stated, "No matter how much you insist, Mr. Daniel, she indeed overdosed on drugs and committed suicide.
The medical reports and CCTV footages all show concrete evidences. We will have to lock you up next if you keep on making trouble here for not letting us do our duty."
Daniel's eyes only darkened in anger.
He reached out to grab the police officer's collar and pulled him closer harshly. After that, he threatened, "I swear to find out the truth behind it, and once I do, I will make sure you will be there to go down. I will not let anyone who treated her unfairly have it easy."
Daniel opened his eyes the next second, sitting up on the bed. There was a pounding headache, causing him to rub his forehead.
He wasn't the one to usually dream, but these days, he kept on having these vague flashes during his sleep. Although they disappeared from his memory the second he gained consciousness, it brought on to him a strange feeling.
And he felt they were all connected to Emma.
