Chapter 4 - Chapter 4

"Dad didn't die a normal death. He was killed, wasn't he?" she asked looking at her mom shocked face.

"Who told you that." her mom asked with a frown. "Although your father died young, he wasn't killed by anyone. He died of a strange sickness."

"strange sickness? How? Why?." she asked as her voice kept on raising.

"Fiona stop it, now is not the time for this."

"If not now then tell me, when will you give me answers to my questions—the questions that have been hunting me since I was born." tears fell down her check as she wiped them away.

"I'm sorry dear, buy there are some things that have to stay hidden."

"And my fathers death is one of them. Forget that anyway. This necklace, what is it for?"

"Fiona please stop being difficult. I told you it was from your father and her said you should never take it off. I swear he never told me why."

Fiona laughed bitterly as she touched the necklace. She was very happy as a child to have it. It was the only thing she had of her father who died before she was born. But know she couldn't explain how she felt. Maybe she just wanted to know the truth, her origin. "If there is no reason for putting it on, I should better take it off."

"Fiona don't, it's for your protection. Please don't take it off." her mom pleaded.

I thought you said he never told you why I shouldn't take it off." she said as her voice broke. She was pained in her heart, her mom could easily lie to her. Why? She couldn't tell. She could see tears rolling down her mom's eyes. Whether it was real or fake she couldn't tell. "Mom please leave, I want to rest. I had a long day at school today." she said as she laid on the bed. She could hear sobs behind her. Few seconds later, she heard the sound of her door. She knew her mom was gone. She faced upward as she allowed the tears to run down her check freely without delay.

The next day which was a saturday, she woke up quite late. She felt tired and emotionally drained. She opened her eyes but immediately put a hand on her face to protect it from the sun. Her mom must be waiting for her downstairs. Maybe she shouldn't have talked that way to her yesterday. She stood up from the bed as she walked into the restroom. Few minutes later, she was out. She dressed up and went downstairs. "Mom" she called out as she sighted her mom setting the table.

"Fiona dear, come sit."

She walked slowly as she sat opposite her mom.

"Im sorry dear, about last night.".

"If you are sorry then will you tell me the truth?" she asked with a raised brow.

"Its saver for some things to be left untold."

"Is that so?" she said and inhaled sharply. "Sorry that I yelled at you yesterday. I'm going out. I would be back in the evening. She said as she stood up and peck her mom.

"Don't come back late, okay."

"Okay mom." she said as she walked out of the house.

Fiona walked into a superstore. She was out to get a gift for her mom's birthday. After getting the things, she decided to take a stroll to a playground nearby. When she got there, the play ground was empty. She dropped the things she holding and sat on a swing. She was still feeling hurt inside. Maybe she was wrong, maybe she was not suppose to be too curious. She knew that her mom tried for her. She had been the only one there for her since she was born. But why was she still feeling this way. She heard footsteps behind her. It was strange because when she came here, she didn't find anyone. She looked back but she didn't see anyone. Maybe she was hallucinating, she thought. Before she could react, she was surrounded by three men and they were laughing ferociously. She was scared, who were they? Why were they here? Looking at their faces, she couldn't recognise them. She quickly dropped the money left with her on the ground. " please, that is the money I have with me. Please don't hurt me." she pleaded. Her plea was followed by laughter from the three men.

"Who told you we need your money?" the first man said as he laughed more.

"Yea we don't, we are here to end you just like we did to your father." the second man said.

The last man standing at the middle smirk as he saw fear and curiosity on her face. "I know you have a lot of questions, but we aren't here to answer that." he said as they rushed at her together. She looked around trembling trying to find anything to defend herself but she found none. Is this how she was going to die, she thought as she closed her eyes. She just hoped that she would be given a painless death. "hurg," she heard a scream. Opening her eyes, she saw a man fighting with the three men. Who was he? She couldn't tell. The new man was faster and seemed stronger than the other men. Before long, the the three men were rolling on the ground. Her knight in shinning armour turned back as he walked towards her. Her eyes widen as she saw his face. "That was the look you gave me when we first met." he said with a smirk as he got closer to her.

"Rex? What are you doing here?"

"Well, that's not how to say thank you for saving your life." he said as he stopped in front of her.

She looked around as she just realised that she escaped death by the tip of the teeth. "Thanks." She said in a small voice.

"Who were those men, did you offend anyone in the city." he asked with a concerned look as he picked up her bag and money.

"No, i don't. Never seen them before."

"Are you sure?"

"Yea, but they talked about my…." She stopped as she looked at his face. They were almost out of the playground and it was getting late.

"I know you don't want to talk about some things because you don't really trust me. But if you have any problem, I'm here." he said as they kept on walking till they got to her street.

"I hope you would be safe from this point." he said as he handed her bag to her.

"yea, thanks a lot."

"Dont mention." he said as he walked away.

When she got home, it was already dark. She was tired and had no appetite. She got into her room and bolted it. Memory from her attack rushed to her and tears rolled down her eyes. Thousand of question went through her mind but she had no answer to them. Why? What was the connection between those men, her dad and this necklace?" she thought as she touched the necklace on her neck. She remembered the middle man was looking at the necklace. She was tempted to take it off but she didn't. She would have asked her mom but her mom have been keeping things from her lately. She laid on the bed exusted. The next day was her mom's birthday. How was it going to be, she couldn't tell. She had ordered cake for the next day and it was gonna arrive very early the next day.
