Chapter 7 - Phantom Step in Action

The giant centipede monstrosity twisted its grotesque shape, dozens of legs scuttering across stone. Its eyes flashed hotly reddened as they bore down upon Yami, mandibles snapping wildly.

Yami smirked, twirling his scythes. "What is wrong? Missed your opportunity to bite?"

The centipede screamed and attacked once more, mandibles as big as buildings out and ready to pound him to a pulp.

Phantom Step.

Yami's body blanched like a spectre as he sidestepped out of the way, mandibles snapping wildly in mid-air.

Reappearing on the creature's back, he didn't hesitate.

SLASH! SLASH!

Both scythes cut through the armored hides, darkness boiling in his trail.

The centipede screeched in agony, its body shaking violently. Yami barely managed to jump off before it slammed into the dungeon wall, cracking the stone.

Landing smoothly, he produced his scythes. "Gotta say, this skill is really awesome."

The centipede wasn't dead yet, though. Its wounds dripped with dark green liquid and convulsively twitched about in a flailing manner—before, in a hideous noise, mangled portions of its shell rebuilt.

Yami narrowed his eyes. "Regeneration, right? That is inconvenient."

The monster rushed him again, faster this time. Yami dodged to the side, but the centipede suddenly curled its body, swiping at him with its razor-sharp legs.

For the first time ever, he felt a swipe across his side, cutting across his fur.

He clicked his tongue. Alright okay, okay, I know how things are.

He tightened his grip on his scythes and took a deep breath.

Time to close out.

Phantom Step.

The moment when he attacked for the second time, Yami vanished—but he reappeared right at its head.

"Reaper's Dance."

He spun in mid-air, swinging wildly in a series of slashes, his twin scythes cutting across the monster joint after joint in succession. The centipede screamed in desperation before its head cracked and thumped to the floor in the cellar.

Silence.

Then—

"Soul Absorbed. Reaper's Will +3%."

Yami landed securely, since the centipede dissolved in a cloud of darkness. He cracked his neck.

"Alright," he smoothed himself down. "Who is next?"

The dungeon went quiet.

Then, from way down in darkness, there arose sound of some gigantic thing moving in the corridors.

Yami grinned.

Looks like he had really faced the trial.
