Ryosuke and Yuki came home in the late afternoon.
The boy's arms were loaded with shopping bags, his face slightly flushed. He cast a quick glance toward the front door, but before he even had the chance to set the bags down, Sayuri suddenly appeared in front of them, arms crossed and chin held high.
"Ah, there you are," she murmured, glaring at Ryosuke, clearly displeased.
Without another word, Sayuri shot them a look that revealed all her resentment before storming up the stairs. She seemed intent on making her displeasure obvious, each step of her little feet producing a sharp sound that echoed through the house.
A bit unsettled, Yuki turned her head toward her sisterâthe mother of Ryosuke and Sayuriâwho was waiting in the living room with a knowing smile on her lips.
"Don't worry, Yuki. Sayuri's just a little upset⊠She wished she could have gone with you. She told me she wanted to spend some time with you too."
Yuki let out a small sigh and turned toward the stairs.
"Sayuri, sweetheart! Come down here, please!"
At first, silence answered her call, but after a moment, Sayuri slowly came down the steps, her face lowered, still damp with stubborn little tears she tried to hide by wiping them away with her fingers. She stopped in front of her aunt, then lifted her eyes, a half-pout, half-curious expression on her face.
Yuki smiled and affectionately ruffled her hair.
"Come on, Sayuri, tomorrow it'll be your turn, okay? I just needed a little one-on-one time with Ryosuke today, but tomorrow, I want to spend the whole day with just you, just us girls! We'll do whatever you want."
Sayuri's eyes instantly lit up, and a timid smile spread across her face, erasing the last traces of sadness. She nodded eagerly, a spark of excitement shining in her gaze.
"Really, Auntie?"
"Really! Promise!"
At that moment, Ryosuke, who had been watching quietly, stumbled into the living room under the weight of the bags. He finally dropped them to the floor with a sigh of relief.
His mother looked at him, amused, an impish smile forming on her lips.
"Well, my boy, looks like you really enjoyed your outing," she teased, glancing curiously at the colorful bags.
A little embarrassed, Ryosuke made as if to hurry away, then stopped and shrugged.
"Uh, this is just a one-time thing, okay? Don't go thinking this is going to become a habit or turn into some big deal!"
His mock-serious tone made the whole family laugh, and even Sayuri couldn't help but giggle, her mood completely changed.
Now in excellent spirits, Sayuri slid over to the bags, her eyes sparkling with curiosity as she examined them.
"So, what did you buy?" she asked eagerly.
Ryosuke rolled his eyes at his little sister snooping through his things, but he didn't stop her.
"Boy stuff, Sayuri. Don't worry, nothing you'd find interesting!" he replied, trying to sound serious.
"Well, if it's that boring, then you won't mind if I take a look!" she shot back with a mischievous grin, pulling out a brightly colored cap.
Ryosuke stepped closer, pretending to look annoyed, and gently took the cap back from Sayuri before ruffling her hair.
"Alright, alright⊠you'll get your surprises tomorrow, so be patient!"
Sayuri's eyes gleamed with mischief as she turned toward her mother, an impish smile spreading across her lips.
"Mom, guess what? Ryosuke took the cap from hisâ" she began, her teasing laughter lighting up her face.
Ryosuke's cheeks flushed red. Before he even thought about it, he clapped his hand over his sister's mouth to shut her up.
"Shh! Stop talking nonsense, Sayuri!" he exclaimed.
But Sayuri only burst out laughing behind his hand. She wriggled and tried to pry his hand away, her muffled little voice still managing to taunt him with playful, unintelligible words.
The situation quickly escalated into a playful scuffle. Ryosuke finally let go, but Sayuri, determined to keep teasing him, threw herself at him, shouting:
"Admit it's the Spoukman cap! You want to be like him!"
Ryosuke tried to ruffle her hair again, but Sayuri skillfully dodged, darting away to annoy him further.
Laughter filled the room louder and louder, and even their mother, who had stayed quiet until now, couldn't help but smile at the cheerful sibling squabble.
Yuki clapped her hands to get their attention.
"Hey, you two, listen to me for a second!"
The children froze and turned their eyes toward her, intrigued by their aunt's playful tone.
"What if we made a cake?"
Sayuri's eyes instantly lit up.
"A cake? Really? Can we decorate it ourselves?" she asked, already swept up in the excitement of having fun in the kitchen.
The children's mother, who had followed Yuki's suggestion with a warm smile, nodded with a laugh.
"Great idea! Come on, let's get everything ready."
In no time, the whole family was in the kitchen, each one bustling around to gather ingredients. Sayuri was bouncing everywhere, eager to help, while Ryosuke tried to keep some kind of orderâthough his attempts at seriousness were constantly undermined by his little sister's enthusiasm.
"I'm cracking the eggs!" Sayuri shouted, grabbing the carton carefully as though it were a precious treasure.
Ryosuke, arms crossed, gave her a half-smile.
"Just be careful, Sayuri. Last time you dropped one on the floor!"
Sayuri scrunched her nose at him and carefully cracked each egg with the focus of a pastry chef, sneaking quick glances at her brother.
Meanwhile, Yuki measured the sugar and butter, exchanging knowing smiles with her sister, who was weighing the flour. The two adults were clearly delighted to see the children so happy and involved.
As the minutes passed, the kitchen filled with laughter and lively chatter. The counter was soon covered in flour, and at one point, Sayuri's excitement even sent a splash of melted chocolate flying out of the bowl.
Ryosuke grimaced, but couldn't help laughing at the chocolate smudges on his little sister's face.
"You're almost more covered in chocolate than the cake!" he joked, sneaking a spoonful of batter to taste.
"Hey! Hands off until it's baked!" Yuki scolded, pretending to be strict before winking at him.
When the preparation was finally done, the two children looked proudly at the cake as it went into the oven. Then they all settled around the table.
A sweet little while later, the dessert was gone.
