Both of them remained silent after Kofi called the chapter's name.
He withdrew his hand from behind the book, watching it hover in the air below his face.
"You want to read me a story?"
Arlene looked at the floating book.
"That is how you plan on making me talk?"
Placing the fountain pen between his fingers, Kofi pulled on his gloves.
Then he reached up to his face, scratching his chin.
"Possibly."
"Before you begin, though, the speech you made as you woke up—about equality. What was it for?"
Kofi did not look up.
"It was about equality."
Arlene snorted sharply, but she did not speak further.
He cleared his throat. "Should I read aloud?"
She stared at him, Kofi was sure he heard her mutter beneath her breath. Something about his mother.
He surmised that she'd hurled more insults at him within her mind.
He couldn't be sure.
He wouldn't be peeking inside her mind today.
"Should I?"
Arlene huffed a breath.
"Please do."
Kofi complied.
