Hot blood courses through his veins and adrenaline was at its peak. Avon looked around and saw two cadets overpowering one mech by working together, he thought of helping them but behind them one cadet was barely dodging another mech's attacks, so he went past the first two cadets to help the one about to die.
He went above the mech and fired a laser beam targeting the mech's joints. A few cables burned, the laser beam wasn't strong enough. But this was enough to catch its attention. Avon didn't give it much time and using his jets he rushed down towards the mech and spinning mid-air using his blades he had go at its neck. The attack didn't land properly so very little damage was done. The mech tried to attack Avon when from behind, the cables at its knee joint were cut in a single slash. The cadet whom Avon helped was attacking now. The mech lost balance and tumbled, taking advantage Avon again targetted the neck.
Again his attack couldn't land properly, this time because a bullet shot out of its body and hit him square in the chest, protected by his armour he got thrown back. Then a missile was launched at him, the one that could break the armour and kill. He used his jets to go upwards, with the sudden thrust, he felt a strong jerk but seemed like the missile wouldn't hit him.
He was wrong, it changed its course,
'Tch, guided missile!'
He didn't have much time to react now, the missile came very close, still he couldn't just let it hit him.
He tried to spin out of its way, but his shoulder touched the rear end of the missile, he braced for the blast in his mind.
But nothing happened and the missile just went forward and then took u-turn following him again. Knowing he can't dodged forever he shot a laser beam at the missile and it blasted immediately.
He felt the impact but his armour protected him. It seemed that the rear ends of these missiles had no sensors. He looked down and saw the cadet slashing and shooting at the mech relentlessly, not giving any opening or chance to it.
He too went below and slashed at the neck again, this time all the cables were cut. Then not wasting a second he caught the bare cables and pulled them out, the moment the heart came out the other cadet shot it and it blasted to smithereens.
They looked at each other in relief, but they couldn't spare even a single moment, again the footing began to rise. Not wanting to see what it had in store this time Avon just moved away using his jets and the other cadet did the same too.
They both saw another cadet running away from two mechs at once and knew they had to help. They fired at the mecha from distance to distract them and went closer to help the cadet.
Just as they got closer, a third mech appeared from the ground and caught hold of the cadet, Avon and his fellow fighter slashed hard at it and Avon inserted the exploding ball in the cables.
It exploded and damaged the neck joint severely and his friend used the opportunity to pull the heart out and blast it. The two mechs began attacking then too. Now all three of them were ready to destroy the two mechs. Avon lunged at one of the mechs trying to slash its neck, but the second one tried to attack him midway, another cadet blocked the attack and the third cadet slashed at its neck. All this time the first mech had a lot of time to react.
Instead of attacking Avon right before it, it launched its missile the Avon had saved before. The poor cadet had no time to react and was blown away. His armour had broken and burn marks could be seen. This made Avon and the third cadet hesitate for a second and that was enough.
The claw of the mech slashed hard at the third cadet, beheading him. Shocked at the turnaround Avon felt fear in his heart, but that was only momentary, at this moment when his body and mind were at peak, his senses were overclocking, his instinct told him now, when the mech had just turned its back to him was the perfect chance to attack. He lunged at it and threw three exploding balls right in its joints. Three balls were enough to destroy its heart too. He could see flames coming out from inside the metal. Then glanced at the cadet who was hit by the missile, he hadn't noticed earlier but that man's head split open.
Avon knew fighting mechs who appeared endlessly was pointless so he rushed towards the centre to reach the commanders.
What he saw there was truly fearsome. A mech, as tall as a three storey building, with one eye at the centre of its face and two horns was fighting with three commanders at once. It had rib like structures below the neck and a canon on one hand and a sharp blade on the other.
Two more commanders were darting around saving cadets from danger and killing the mechs that were rising from the ground. The elites were doing the same too.
He quickly approached one of the commanders who was saving other cadets and spoke to him,
"Sir, at the perimeter, the mechs are slaughtering cadets. They keep appearing endlessly, please find a way to stop them"
The man quickly glanced towards the perimeter, but it was too chaotic there.
"There are more pawns present there than here, they're clearing out the weaker ones first...follow me"
He told Avon as again two mechs appeared before them, but to attack another cadet who was alone.
The commander reached near the mechs instantaneously and with almost no effort defeated them. This surprised Avon, the mechs that were slaughtering them were that weak to the commanders?
Then the man spoke with his fellow commanders while continuing the fight. They seemed to be discussing something while fighting.
Avon too, teaming up with some of the cadets was defeating a few mechs while losing his fellow cadets every now and then.
Soon, the commander came towards Avon,
"Listen, go over to that part of the perimeter and search for a pillar with a hole at the top. Then just throw this in there. Do the same on the opposite side too. Go now!"
Saying so he was handed two metal sticks. He didn't know what was the plan but he had to follow the command. So, dodging all the attacks coming towards him he flew in the direction he pointed to. The footing there had risen and he flew to the top. As he went above, he stopped to look for the pillar, that's when a missile hit him from the side. He was blown away into the wall at a lower level. The armour had cracked and it seemed like he broke a few bones too. It pained too much. His mind went blank for a moment.
Trying to keep it together he tried to fly again but he only got small bursts. He had fallen at the edge of the risen platform but at a lower level. It seemed that there were some lower level which became exposed when the platforms rose up. He was panting heavily trying to come on terms with the pain. Clutching his side he stood up.
His head was ringing and he couldn't think properly. He just looked at the sky, it was bright blue and sun was clearly visible.
He just stood there flat on his feet, both arms just suspended. Sunlight poured from behind him because the exposed level had no walls but only pillars. He raised his head slightly.
Only a sillouete could be seen, standing alone, breathing hard and slow.
Slowly the ringing in his head died out and he could think properly again. The pain felt more intense now. He couldn't fly so he needed to go up top some other way.
Two more missiles could be seen coming towards from a distance and his body did the first thing his mind told him. He jumped off the level and once missile was close enough he used his jet, using the burst he momentarily went above the missile and as it passed by below him, he held it tail.
Everything seemed to happen in slow motion for him. The missile lost balance and course because of his weight on it and trying to hit who was on its tail it tried to circle around. In the process it went higher. The missile was glitching and this was not something it was built for. It can't attack it own tail.
It continued ascending instead, going higher than the top of the platform. Soon the second one missile caught up too and it was coming at Avon perpendicularly, again Avon, using a burst went higher and the two missiles collided. The shockwave from the explosion pushed him a little higher and away from the platform. Using the burst again, he pushed himself towards the platform and fall hard onto it. He rolled a little upon falling to reduce the impact. Then he stood up, limping, and looked for the pillar.
He kept an eye out for incoming projectiles too. After walking around a little he found one. It was not tall and he could see its top without jumping. It seemed that up top no one was targetting him. He quickly put one stick inside and looked at the other side. It was too far away. He didn't know how to get there since he couldn't fly anymore.
He looked at the distance once again and thought of something.
He would use the bursts of his jet to try and reach as close as possible. He was hoping a missile would come targetting him and he would use it like earlier.
He took a few deep breathes and after reflecting on his plan he thought
'I'm probably gonna die'
