CHAPTER START---
In the blue morning sky above Magnolia, only a few clouds hover lazily above the city, and above one of those small clouds, Oberon floats with his legs crossed.
Wearing a simple blue t-shirt and pair of shorts, his bare feet almost touch the cloud as he focuses on the book in his hands.
He turns it a few times, going back and forth through the pages, studying the design carefully.
"So I basically have to find the angle and focus it to a single point, then expand it again, this is gonna take some practice…" Oberon mutters as he passes a hand through his hair.
After a few more minutes of studying the diagrams, Oberon sets the book down in his lap, and brings his hands together.
Focusing on his Magic Energy, he forms a sphere of light in his hands, then changes its shape into a cylinder.
"Now step two," he stretches the cylinder, and makes both ends translucent while the curved wall becomes opaque.
"Now for the actual hard part," he raises the cylinder to his face and looks through one end of it, then carefully focuses his Light Magic to adjust the angle of the lens on the far side.
"Need the focusing lens," he creates a third lens in the middle of the hollow cylinder, and immediately looks through it. "Ah fuck!"
Oberon and his book begin falling through the sky as the construct he made breaks apart.
Before falling into the cloud he catches himself, covering his dazed right eye.
He closes his left eye for a moment, then relaxes, "Ok, so I didn't blind my left eye, but I need to be more careful, attempt number two," Oberon says as he recreates the construct.
After almost a half hour of work, he finally gets the angle right on all three lenses.
"Yes!" he holds the construct and does a spin above the clouds. "I've got a telescope! Ok, now to study the structure as it is now so I can recreate it more easily," he says as he begins taking notes of the exact angle of the lenses.
After carefully taking notes on his new toy, Oberon looks through it some more, seeing the far shore of the Magnolia Lake behind the Guild Hall.
Oberon laughs so much that he almost loses focus and dispels the telescope.
He moves his focus slightly, aiming the lens toward the lake, seeing a small boat with a man fishing, enjoying the morning on the water by himself.
"Ok, time to see if I can take this to the next level," Oberon says as he gets familiar with the structure of his telescope.
Oberon focuses his Light Magic and brings the telescope to hover in front of him, then touches the opaque curved wall containing the lenses, making it disappear.
Now with the three lenses exposed to light from all sides, it couldn't work, so Oberon focuses his Light Magic between the lenses.
The space between the lenses glows, and Oberon looks through the lenses to see that the device is working once again.
"And now," he places one hand on each of the outer lenses, and sandwiches all three of them together, melding them into one large lens.
Moving his hands away he allows the larger lens to float in front of him, now the size of a beachball to compensate for the change in structure.
He holds it gently and aims it at the man fishing on the lake, seeing him just as clearly as with the previous construct.
"Ok but I seriously need to play more with natural light to get this to a smaller size," he says while moving the massive lens to look at the town below him. "I probably look like an idiot with this huge lens, or a creep that's spying on people…"
After saying that out loud, Oberon decides not to look at people in town with his…
"Telescopic Lens, that's what I'll call it," he decides while looking at the forest instead.
Oberon looks around for another half hour while constantly trying to improve his new Spell, slowly but surely mastering the Telescopic Lens, making it smaller, and adjusting the distance in small increments.
Eventually, Oberon turns his gaze toward the roads leading out of Magnolia, seeing a few interesting things.
"Those Rune Knights look like they're in a rush to board the train huh," he looks around and doesn't see anything interesting for a while while practicing his new spell, eventually spotting an interesting-looking wagon, being pulled by two horses.
He focuses the lens slightly more, trying to see why they've stopped at the side of the dirt road.
He sees an old man repairing a wagon wheel while a younger man with a sword and some basic armor stands guard beside him.
Eventually, the old man finishes repairing the wheel, and the young man struggles to lift the wagon into place for him to place it onto the axle.
Crosses his legs, as if sitting in the air, and watches with curiosity.
"Please just use Magic to lift it, show me something interesting," he mutters while spying on the people.
After a few more minutes Oberon just gets more and more disappointed as the man fails to lift the wagon and sits down to rest.
Oberon just gives a disappointed sigh and flies down to the duo.
He quickly arrives above the pair at the otherwise deserted road, observing them silently.
"How is your back feeling? Did your wound open up?"
"No dad, it's fine, I just need a minute before I try again, don't worry," the younger man says.
"Hi!" Oberon waves, casually, as both men look up at him, staring, frozen.
The old man tries his best to quickly stand as the younger one steps in front of him, putting himself between Oberon and his father, drawing his longsword.
The longsword immediately erupts into flames, drawing Oberon's attention to it.
"Cool sword, so are you a Holder Magic user?" Oberon asks while floating about in the air, not putting much thought into how this looks to the duo.
"Can you take him?" the old man whispers behind his son.
"Let's just try to survive, this kid seems strong," the man responds through gritted teeth.
"Is the sword your only type of Magic?" Oberon asks.
The man looks at Oberon nervously, "Yes actually, it is, and I see you use Flight Magic, quite amazing," he says, trying to flatter Oberon.
"Oh, no I don't have that type of Magic, this is Gravity Magic," Oberon says, casually, still looking at the flaming sword. "Can I try out your Magic Sword, how does it work?"
After hearing 'Gravity Magic' the man and his father instinctively took a step back from the obviously, very dangerous, child.
"Uh, sure," the man deactivates the sword, extinguishing the flames.
As he does so it floats out of his hand and over to Oberon.
"Do I just put Magic Energy into it to bring out the flames?"
"Uh-huh," the man nods nervously.
"Cool!" Oberon immediately activates the flames, and just for a moment, the man gets a sense of his Magic Energy, and how vast it is.
From the moment he connects to the Magic Weapon, he has to constantly feed it Magic Energy, some of his energy leaks out, allowing others to finally sense it.
'Oh fuck,' the man and his father thought simultaneously, watching Oberon dance around in the air playing with the Fire Sword.
"Oh, that reminds me," Oberon turns to them and points at the wagon, then flicks his fingers upward. "There, I made the wagon lighter so you can change the wheel, you should hurry. I have to get to the Guild soon…"
The man and his father look at each other, and they quickly begin working to change the wheel.
The old man works on the wheel while his son keeps his eyes on Oberon, hand ready to throw the daggers held at the back of his belt.
After a few minutes, the wheel is locked back into place and the old man wipes the sweat from his brow.
"Alright, the wheel is fixed, so we'll be heading off now," the younger man says.
"Alright, don't forget this," Oberon says as he gently floats the sword back down to the man, who cautiously takes it.
"So, we can go?"
Oberon looks at the man, a bit unsure why he's asking him, "Are you two selling Magic Items?"
"Oh no," the old man says. "We sell incense and special fragrances, quite popular with the Blue Pegasus Guild, are you perhaps interested in a sample?"
"Are they Magic?"
"Uh…no th—"
"Well good luck on your trip to Hargeon," Oberon cuts him off. "And if you ever get bored of that cool sword, you can always send it to the Fairy Tail Guildhall, tell them it's for Oberon, they'll get it to me, bye!"
And with that, Oberon soars back into the sky to continue his work.
Both the men look at each other and release a sigh of relief, finally able to relax.
"That kid can't be normal, right?" the man asks his father.
"I'm just glad it wasn't some rogue Wizard trying to rob us, be sure to remember his name, Oberon."
"Yeah, let's get out of here, we've still got a few hundred kilometers until Hargeon…"
---1 Hour Later…
Wakaba, Macao, and Master Makarov are laughing to the point of tears as Oberon just floats around the Guildhall trying to make sense of this.
"But that doesn't make any sense!" Oberon says, causing more of the Guildhall to erupt into laughter. "Why would they even think I'm robbing them, I just wanted to check out the Magic Sword! I was helping them!"
Wakaba laughs so hard that he falls off his chair, causing people to laugh even harder as Oberon gets more embarrassed.
Macao is the first to catch his breath, wiping the tears from his eyes. "Kid, you can't just fly over to people and start talking to them. To people like you, Magic is something to be curious about, but to regular people, or people with very little Magic at all, powerful Wizards suddenly appearing from the sky while their wagon is broken down on a deserted road…is probably close to the top of their list of nightmares."
"Ugh, I was just practicing my flying!" Oberon moans as he spins upside down above everyone, yet his clothes and hair remain as if he were standing on the ground.
"We can see that, you're getting quite good at it," Master Makarov says as the Guildhall calms down, now everyone is either at home or recovering from the party they had last night to celebrate Laxus and Oberon's first job.
While some of the less alcohol-inclined individuals were scattered about eating breakfast before heading out for the day.
"Thanks, I was up above the clouds practicing a spell earlier, wanna see it?" Oberon asks, excitedly.
"Will it explode?" Wakaba asks.
"No…I'm still working on Light Magic to make things explode, but check this out," Oberon puts his hands together, still upside down in the air, and as he separates his hands a lens as wide as his head forms between them.
He moves his hands away, allowing it to float on its own.
"Pretty cool right?"
They all stare at him, not sure what they're looking at.
"I call it Telescopic Lens… it's a telescope!"
"Ohhh!" half the Guildhall nods along.
"So does it actually work?" Macao asks.
"Yeah, I used the book you got me to design it, pretty awesome right?"
"That is quite impressive," Master Makarov says. "Most Wizards can destroy things, but very few can use Magic for such delicate work, you're most impressive my boy, as always."
As he's explaining the Spell to Master Makarov and Wakaba, Macao walks over to the bar to refresh his drink.
"So, you got him a book about telescopes?" Enno asks as she pours him another drink.
"Well, the kids pretty excited about eventually getting a Celestial Spirit, but the Master made him promise to focus on Cosmic until he becomes S-Class," Macao said. "I figured letting him learn a bit about the stars would help him sate his curiosity."
"Awe, I didn't know you were such a softie," she gently touches his arm before moving the counter to deal with another customer.
Macao turns to look back at Oberon, who was now teaching Master Makarov the spell, both Wizards forming telescopes between their hands.
'Kid, you're one hell of a Wizard, but I think your true calling is being a wingman,' Macao thinks as he steals a glance at Enno, who was smiling at him…
