CHAPTER START---
---November 27th, X769, 3PM…
Stepping into the Fairy Tail Guild library, Master Makarov looks around, seeing the simple room with all of its walls completely filled with bookshelves and one more shelf in the middle of the room.
He raises a brow, seeing the one desk in the room with a stack of books atop it and the chair, but doesn't see Oberon.
With a sigh he looks up, seeing Oberon sitting on the ceiling with a book in his lap, legs crossed as he unconsciously plays with a Light Sphere in his hand while reading.
"What have I told you about floating around like that?" Makarov asks, snapping Oberon's attention to him for just a moment.
"That it scares and intimidates people so I shouldn't do it outside the guild," Oberon says as he floats down to the desk below.
"And?"
"And not to walk on the ceiling anymore," Oberon says. "But I made sure not to have my shoes on this time."
Makarov glances at his feet and just rolls his eyes, "Anyway, I need to head to Era for some business later today, so if you have any questions about your Spells now is the time to ask."
Makarov moves the books from the chair and sits while Oberon flips through the pages, searching for something.
"Take a look at this," Oberon hands over his Magic Journal before he floats over to the pile of books and begins searching for something else.
"Hmm," Makarov rubs his chin as he reads the notes. "So you're calling it 'Cosmic Armor', I see…so the issue is that the efficiency of it is terrible. That's something that usually gets solved by experience and time, but if your notes are correct the problem is how you've layered it.
And your notes say it blocks the wind as well, but not light, otherwise, you wouldn't be able to see your body or opponent while cloaked in it. Holding your breath must not have been fun. But since it stops Magic Energy there must be some subconscious steps you can't figure out."
"Really?" Oberon asks as he floats over with a book about Light Magic in his hands. "I figured it was a problem with the way I layered Gravity and Light to make Cosmic."
"No, your innate Magic won't be messed up so easily, the problem is the initial steps you took yesterday while creating this spell," Makarov says. "Tell me what you were thinking about when you came up with this Spell, how exactly did you do it?"
"Well, I sat and meditated behind some cover. I figured since my Magic Container separates me from other Magic sources and Spells, I could bring that into a more physical form with a shield around my body."
"Did you focus on the feeling of the wind on your skin while doing this?"
"Yeah, I actually did," Oberon says. "You think that's why it blocks the winds but not the light, because my body can't feel natural light on my skin so it didn't really register the feeling?"
"Precisely," Master Makarov says. "Your Gravity Magic still can't stop Magic Energy, because the amount of Gravity needed to affect energy is immense, but this Cosmic Armor can stop Magic Energy, that's quite impressive."
"I figured that was because Cosmic is Light and Gravity Magic perfectly fused, so Gravity stops the physical and Light stops the Energy Attacks."
"That is a simple way of explaining it, but we both know it's much more complicated than that," Master Makarov says. "This is one of those situations where we know the input and output, but the process remains a mystery. That's the case with most Magics, as much as we'd like it to be an exact science, a large part of Magic is still simply leaning toward faith."
"Yeah, but I can at least adjust what I want to be affected by the Cosmic Armor," Oberon says. "And make it a lot more efficient, but I think I've reached the limit of what I can learn by studying Light Barrier. Do you have any more advanced defensive Light Magic?"
Makarov rubs his chin for a moment before shaking his head.
"There is one, but that won't be too useful for you, since Light Magic is only half of this," Makarov says. "It would be better to study the theory aspects of Defense Seal Magic instead."
After saying that Makarov elongates his right hand around the shelf to the other side of the library, and without looking, retrieves the exact book he needs.
"This book contains the Maximum Defense Seal Spells, don't go learning them, but understand them and how the Magic Energy is layered, some of these spells can designate friend and foe," Makarov says. "Others can keep out certain elements while allowing others to pass through without issue, if you can learn from them your problem will be solved."
Oberon looks at the cover of the new Grimoire in his hands, "Maximum Defense Seal, ok, sounds perfect."
"Now, is that all?"
"Actually no, there is one other thing," Oberon says. "It's actually about my ability to meditate, which lets me heal and refill my Magic Energy super fast, I figured you must be a master of that, right?"
"Of course, you cannot be a Wizard Saint without mastering such a basic technique, what of it? I thought you were already past that."
"I am, but, during that battle, I had to use it, and I got really lucky that she didn't blast away the rock I was hiding behind," Oberon says. "I figured if I could move it would be better, but when I tried that it didn't work."
Makarov raises a brow at that, "And how exactly did you try that?"
"Well, earlier today, I went above the clouds, then just fell. I figured if I was moving but not using a Spell it should be possible, but that didn't work," Oberon says.
"Are you insane?!"
"The next idea wasn't so crazy, I promise," Oberon quickly defended himself. "After that didn't work I needed something slower, so I tried to meditate on the river, and it worked better than on the train, but still, it barely did anything."
Makarov pinches the bridge of his nose, "I'm impressed by how insane and talented you are all at once."
"Uh, thanks?"
"Do you recall what I said, about what Magic is in regards to energy?"
"Yeah, Magic is the energy within us and the energy of the natural world working together perfectly."
"Yes, well, because of how much more vast the world is than us, the meditation exercise only works when we clear our minds and follow the energy of the world," Makarov says. "That's why even I cannot perform that exercise successfully while moving, and certainly not at the speed that trains travel."
"Wait, you can't?" Oberon was genuinely surprised. "I always use it when traveling…it doesn't really restore any Magic Energy, but it helps me pass the time, and clear my head."
"That's because, my boy, you're super weird," Makarov says with a straight face. "Your Magic allows you to separate yourself from the world instead of becoming one with it, but you do this while also developing an understanding and relationship with the world beforehand.
For me, and any other Mage in fact, it's like the Magic Energy of the world and I must always hold hands, that is the only way we can use Magic. And since all things are doing this at once, our Magics can affect each other in invasive ways if we so desire.
But for you, for someone beloved by Magic, the world seems to trust you in a different way. It simply hands you the Magic Energy to fill your Magic Container and lets go of your hand, trusting you not to use that power against it.
It is this relationship that we must focus on to perform that exercise, and moving disrupts that quite easily. But Magic itself seems to love you and trust you, for that reason instead of holding your hand, it's more like a friend pushing you forward."
"Huh, I never thought about it like that," Oberon says, looking down at his hands, while still sitting in the air. "Beloved by Magic, really?"
"Well, I may have been a little dramatic there, but in a sense, yes," Makarov says. "I pride myself on being able to guide and teach my children, to help them along on their path to the summit of Magic, but in your case, that isn't possible."
Oberon looks over at his Master, seeing the man smiling at him.
"Where you go, no one else has been, so I can't tell you what to expect, only help you prepare for all that I've experienced," Makarov says. "I'm sure you will figure this out, I just hope that when you do, when you reach the summit of Magic and the entire world is looking up to you, that you remember this…"
Makarov raises his right hand, with his index finger raised upward and his thumb facing away from his body.
Oberon mimics him, smiling at his Master, "Of course, if I'm going to the top, then Fairy Tail is coming with me!"
