Chapter 1 - Prologue - I

It was just another day of the life of an ordinary 19 year old boy named Alex. He was just passing through his daily routine of walking from his college back to the orphanage where he had lived since he was a little over five months old according to the matron of the orphanage. He had short black hair arranged in a neat hairstyle and dark brown eyes. His features weren't something extraordinary but he was a fairly good looking guy with an average body and was wearing second hand clothes as he couldn't afford many new clothes with the little money he got from doing odd jobs here and there and the orphanage he lived in couldn't provide much allowance either.

According to the matron of the orphanage, he was left in front of the door of the orphanage with a letter which told him that his Mother was a single woman that couldn't afford nor take care of a baby. She also said in the letter that she wanted him to live a happy life but couldn't even properly feed the both of them the 5 months she had been taking care of him and that he was better off living in the orphanage without knowing his incapable Mother. She also left his name in the letter - Alex Grey.

Even though he knew his Mother left him, Alex longed to someday meet his mother and never gave up trying to search for her ever since he heard the story from the matron.

Today Alex was very happy because he got his test results of his first semester and he finished in the top 10 of his year and he'd get to enjoy two weeks of vacations following his results. As Alex was imagining what he will do in the vacations, he heard someone yell at him to move and he snapped back to reality and noticed a truck coming at him at a very fast speed. He panicked and froze on the spot and before he realised what happened and he could move out of the way of the truck, it was too late. Everything went black.

When Alex woke up, he noticed it was night time and he was lying on a lawn. He tried to remember how he got there when he realised that he was hit by a truck and started panicking. He started examining his face and other body parts but couldn't feel any kind of pain and was starting to wonder whether he dreamed of being hit by the truck or if he was dead right now. he decided on the latter being the realistic option as the memory of being hit by the truck was still too vivid in his mind and decided to search for clues about the place he found himself in.

When Alex was deciding this, he suddenly felt a sharp pain in his head and yelped. the pain kept increasing and Alex fell to his knees when he suddenly felt as if a lot of information was being dumped in his head. He realised that he was receiving memories of someone.

He remembered how he was born in a loving family of three people - His Mom, Dad and him. He remembered how his parents raised him and he remembered playing with them and eating with them and spending every day with them. He remembered his Mother's beautiful voice as well as the taste of her great food. He remembered how hard his Dad worked to provide for them. They were poor but they were still happy.

Then came the next memories, he remembered how his 18 year old self who came home after spending some time with his friends felt when the police officer gave him the news that his Mother and Father's taxi got hit by a speeding truck and how no one in the taxi survived. He remembered how he cried himself to sleep every night before he got too hungry and had to start working to provide for himself as he noticed he would run out of his parents' savings sooner or later. He remembered how some of his friends tried to help him but as all of them also came from poor families they couldn't afford to give much away.

Being the age of an adult, he didn't need to get a guardian and was expected to be able to feed himself so he tried to work but he couldn't afford his current living arrangements or his school fees and had to give up the apartment where he and his parents had spent the last 6 years of their lives to move into a different apartment which he could afford. He also decided to give up on any further education until he could save enough money for it. His new apartment was much cheaper but had much less commodities available but he made it work as long as he had a bed to sleep in and had a bathroom and kitchen that worked.

He was trying hard to make something of his life by working at a construction site doing labor work as he soon found out it was hard for someone to get a job for someone who had dropped out of the education system midway. He worked hard at his job as he didn't want to go through the stressful nights he spent when he didn't have any job and was burning through his remaining funds. But, even then he was fired from his current job after working the whole month and not receiving any salary for it as the man in charge of the construction site he worked in thought him an easy target to scam and swindled his salary out of him.

He remembered the hopelessness he felt when he returned to his shabby apartment that night. He remembered counting the remaining money he had and realising that he can't pay his rent for the next month and could barely feed himself for six days with it.

All these recent changes in his life instilled a sense of hopelessness in him and he decided to give up and end his life instead of suffering more and bought sleeping pills with most of his remaining saved money and came to his favorite spot in the city - The edge of the Clyne River where he often came with his parents for a picnic during summer. He remembered as the light left his eyes as he watched the smooth surface of the river with the occasional ripples appearing here and there as he closed his eyes.
