Chapter 18 - Learning to be a Blacksmith 2

After creating his first sword, Jack was very happy and Tim asked him to drink a beer to celebrate Jack's achievement, after all knowing how to make a sword Jack could already be considered a blacksmith, even if it was one of the worst.

Jack was excited about it, but the other day he was no longer going to create the sword and had to learn how to make other types of weapons, other weapons were made in different ways and had different important points as well.

A good sword had to be tough, have a sharp blade, and have a good balance in order to be used easily, but several different weapons had to have a different balance, and Jack had to learn to do simple things like spears, axes, club, and club.

It was easier because most of the work was with wood that was much easier to use than metal, so in a few more weeks Jack had already learned to make all kinds of weapons that Tim could teach.

Learning how to make new weapons also helped Jack to increase his skills and experience, so he was able to make the sword more easily now, after learning how to make weapons Tim decided to teach Jack how to make armor.

He would teach how to make leather, metal, and armor of various types, it was not necessarily more difficult to make, but it required more time for the blacksmiths to work, to make the leather armor had to deal with the leather taken from the animals that were the hardest part.

To mold leather into the shape of armor was not difficult and so Tim tried to teach Jack more how to treat leather well so that it didn't smell and was not so uncomfortable to use, the problem with metal armor was that they had to have the exact measure of the person to be used, otherwise it would be impossible for the armor to close properly on the person.

Making the fittings correctly was another challenge for the metal armor, then the rest was to make the iron molds and then put the molten metal into the mold so that he would have the plates to start creating the armor.

It was more tiring to hammer several hours to complete each piece of armor, but it was difficult to make a mistake in making armor and therefore many blacksmiths preferred to make armor, spears, and other things and did not make swords.

Leather was also needed to make metal armor so that it would be more comfortable to wear, yet some knights preferred to use only part of the metal armor and the rest of leather and chainmail to protect and give mobility.

So Jack spent several months creating armor and swords and other weapons like bows and swords and Tim was satisfied with Jack's improvement, Tim thought it would take years for Jack to become a great blacksmith, but what he lacked was just experience.

Tim also taught Jack how to make farm tools and tools for daily use which was very easy for Jack to learn and started selling products at Tim's workshop, Jack also knew how to repair broken armor and how to maintain all weapons.

In the months that Jack learned more about how to be a blacksmith with Tim he often went out hunting with Mark and Ron too, Jack was no longer considered a novice hunter by other hunters and he already had everyone's respect.

Even though he was not a master using the sword he managed to stay for a long time, fighting Ron who was the best using the sword among hunters, with the bow Jack was still not very good with the instinctive shot and so he didn't get it right every time the animals are in motion, but if the animal was stopped it would hit.

After he no longer needed to make weapons and armor every day he always took part in the hunts with the other hunters and was considered important by everyone, so a few months later Jack was much more experienced and did his job as a blacksmith better.

So Jack would have to go on another hunt and stay out of the house for a week, so he had a good conversation with his dad and talked about his mom, that was a topic that Tim normally didn't like to talk about because he felt very sad.

Jack took his sword and went to the hut that was now used by hunters from other villages as well, at least as long as they had to hunt to keep the villages safe and prevent wild animals from attacking the villagers.

Jack took his armor and fixed his bow and left with only the bow, the sword, his quiver to keep the arrows, and with his bag that was prepared for emergencies, Jack went out with Mark and Ron and met with other hunters on the way.

Before going to the forest Jack had a very bad feeling like he had never felt before, even when he was attacked by the lions in the river before he was a hunter and when he fought with the wolves his feeling was not that bad.

The other hunters already knew this because it was not uncommon for hunters to have special skills that would help them survive, so all hunters were tense throughout the week.

They hunted bears and some wild animals which were not so common, but nothing was too dangerous and after a few days on the hunt Jack no longer had the feeling that something bad was going to happen, he thought it was strange, but it was good that nothing bad happened.

Even so, Jack could not calm down and as soon as the hunt was over Jack returned home running, arriving at the village he could see many strange things and the residents did not seem to want to look at him.

This only increased the feeling of anxiety of Jack who came running home with his things without leaving anything in the cabin as he always did, getting close to home he saw that the doors and windows were open as they normally were not.

Jack also smelled a strong smell of blood coming from his house, so Jack felt even more anxious, but he couldn't walk properly because his legs were weak, Jack started to cry without realizing it and forced himself to walk to his house.
