Chapter 31 - Don’t Put Me in a Position I Can’t Accept

The atmosphere didn't return to normal after that.

It lingered—stuck between them like an unresolved tension that refused to dissolve.

Shen Yichen still stood close to Lin Yue.

Closer now.

As if correcting something invisible that had gone wrong.

Lu Han hadn't moved from his spot.

But he also hadn't stepped forward again.

That was new.

Even he seemed to understand something had shifted.

Lin Yue broke the silence first.

"Shen Yichen," she said softly, "you're escalating every time something small happens."

His eyes immediately turned to her.

Not defensive.

Attentive.

"I know," he replied.

A pause.

"And I don't want to stop."

Silence.

That honesty again—sharp, unfiltered.

Lu Han exhaled slowly.

"You're reacting like she belongs exclusively in your space," he said.

Shen Yichen looked at him.

Slow.

Controlled.

"I'm reacting like I can't afford competition," he said quietly.

That word—*competition*—made Lin Yue's expression shift slightly.

"I'm not something people compete over," she said softly.

Shen Yichen's gaze softened immediately.

"I know," he said.

A pause.

"But my mind doesn't respond like that."

Silence.

Lin Yue studied him carefully.

"So what does it respond like?"

Shen Yichen didn't hesitate.

"Risk," he said.

A pause.

"Anything too close to you feels like risk."

Lu Han stepped forward slightly.

"So you're labeling everyone as a threat?"

Shen Yichen didn't look away.

"Not everyone," he said.

A pause.

"Only what feels like it could replace me."

That line hit differently.

Because it wasn't about control anymore.

It was about replacement fear.

Lin Yue frowned slightly.

"You think someone can replace you in my life?"

Shen Yichen paused.

That was the first time he didn't answer immediately.

Then quietly:

"I don't know."

Silence.

"And I don't want to find out."

Lu Han's voice sharpened.

"That's not a rational way to live."

Shen Yichen finally turned toward him.

Slow.

Cold.

"I didn't choose rationality when I lost her once," he said.

A pause.

"I choose prevention now."

Lin Yue stepped slightly closer.

Not away.

Closer.

Shen Yichen noticed instantly.

His attention locked onto her movement.

Lin Yue spoke softly.

"You're building rules around me that no one else agreed to."

Shen Yichen didn't deny it.

"Yes."

Simple.

Honest.

Final.

"And I will keep building them."

Silence.

Lu Han looked between them.

"This is exactly how isolation begins," he said quietly.

Shen Yichen turned toward him.

"And what do you call losing her again?" he asked.

A pause.

"Freedom?"

No answer came.

Because neither option felt acceptable in this situation.

Shen Yichen turned back to Lin Yue.

Their distance was minimal again.

His voice softened slightly.

"Don't put me in a position I can't accept," he said quietly.

A pause.

"Because I won't choose the world over you again."

Silence settled heavier than before.

And Lin Yue finally understood—

this wasn't just jealousy anymore.

It was fear turning into rules.

And rules turning into something that could quietly reshape everything around them.

Without asking permission.
