Chapter 34 - Don’t Let Silence Become Distance

The villa had stopped feeling like a shared space.

It now felt like a monitored one.

Not in a mechanical way—

but in the way Shen Yichen's attention never fully left Lin Yue, even when he wasn't speaking.

Silence used to be neutral.

Now it felt dangerous.

Lu Han noticed it first.

"You're reacting to pauses now," he said quietly.

Shen Yichen didn't look at him.

"I'm reacting to gaps," he replied.

Lin Yue frowned slightly.

"Gaps in what?" she asked softly.

Shen Yichen finally looked at her.

"Connection," he said.

Simple.

Direct.

Lin Yue exhaled slowly.

"So even silence feels like distance to you."

Shen Yichen nodded once.

"Yes."

No hesitation.

No doubt.

Lu Han stepped forward slightly.

"That's not healthy perception," he said.

Shen Yichen finally turned toward him.

Slow.

Controlled.

"I didn't develop it because it's healthy," he said quietly.

"I developed it because it's necessary."

Silence.

Lin Yue studied him carefully.

"You're treating every moment without interaction as potential loss," she said softly.

Shen Yichen didn't deny it.

"Yes."

A pause.

"And I don't let it last."

Lu Han's voice tightened.

"You're conditioning yourself to panic at normal human space."

Shen Yichen finally looked at him fully.

"I'm conditioning myself not to lose her again," he said.

A pause.

"Even in silence."

Silence dropped again.

Lin Yue stepped slightly closer.

Shen Yichen noticed instantly.

His focus sharpened.

Lin Yue spoke gently.

"You don't trust me enough to even be still around me."

Shen Yichen didn't hesitate.

"I trust you," he said.

A pause.

"I don't trust absence."

Silence.

That distinction changed everything again.

Lin Yue looked at him carefully.

"You're not reacting to me anymore," she said softly.

Shen Yichen shook his head once.

"I am."

A pause.

"But I'm also reacting to what I might lose when I'm not reacting."

Lu Han exhaled sharply.

"This is self-reinforcing anxiety," he said.

Shen Yichen finally turned toward him fully.

"And what do you call forgetting someone completely?" he asked quietly.

No answer.

Because that had already happened once.

Shen Yichen turned back to Lin Yue.

Their distance was almost nonexistent now.

His voice softened slightly.

"Don't let silence become distance," he said quietly.

A pause.

"Because in my mind, it already is."

Silence settled again.

And Lin Yue realized something unsettling—

he wasn't just afraid of losing her physically.

He was now treating even *quiet moments* as the first stage of disappearance.

And once a mind starts seeing absence in everything…

it never stops trying to prevent it.
