Chapter 36 - Don’t Disappear Even in Front of Me

The villa had grown quiet again.

But it wasn't peace.

It was monitoring stillness.

Like even silence now had rules Shen Yichen enforced without speaking them.

He stood near Lin Yue as always.

Too close to call it coincidence anymore.

Lu Han watched him for a moment before speaking.

"You're no longer reacting to actions," he said quietly.

"You're reacting to *presence itself*."

Shen Yichen didn't look at him.

"I'm reacting to possibility," he replied.

Lin Yue exhaled softly.

"Possibility of what?" she asked.

Shen Yichen turned to her immediately.

"Loss," he said.

Simple.

Constant.

Lin Yue frowned slightly.

"You think I could disappear just by being out of your sight?"

Shen Yichen didn't hesitate.

"Yes."

That answer was too direct to soften.

Lu Han stepped forward.

"That's irrational escalation," he said sharply.

Shen Yichen finally looked at him.

Slow.

Controlled.

"Irrelevant," he said.

A pause.

"If it prevents losing her again."

Silence.

Lin Yue studied him carefully.

"You're treating my existence like it's conditional," she said softly.

Shen Yichen nodded once.

"It is," he said.

A pause.

"Everything is conditional on time."

Silence.

That statement wasn't emotional anymore.

It was philosophy shaped by fear.

Lu Han exhaled sharply.

"You're rewriting reality based on worst-case assumptions," he said.

Shen Yichen didn't deny it.

"Yes."

Simple.

Unshaken.

"And I'm not wrong often."

Lin Yue stepped slightly closer again.

Shen Yichen noticed instantly.

His attention locked.

Lin Yue spoke softly.

"You're not seeing me as someone stable in your life anymore."

Shen Yichen answered immediately.

"I see you," he said.

A pause.

"But I also see what happens when I stop seeing you."

Silence.

That was the fracture again.

Not disbelief.

Memory overriding presence.

Lin Yue looked at him carefully.

"You're not living in the present," she said softly.

Shen Yichen didn't hesitate.

"I'm living in prevention," he replied.

Lu Han stepped forward again.

"This level of vigilance will destroy your ability to function normally."

Shen Yichen finally turned toward him fully.

"And normal functioning led me to losing her once," he said quietly.

A pause.

"I prefer this."

Silence dropped again.

Lin Yue's voice softened slightly.

"You don't even allow me to just exist near you without meaning attached," she said.

Shen Yichen shook his head once.

"No."

A pause.

"Because meaning is what keeps you real to me."

Silence.

That line landed differently.

Not romantic.

Not obsessive.

Existential.

Lin Yue studied him for a long moment.

"You're afraid I'll stop feeling real if I'm not constantly in your awareness," she said softly.

Shen Yichen didn't deny it.

"Yes."

Simple.

Honest.

Final.

"And I can't afford that risk."

Lu Han's voice tightened.

"You're building your entire perception of existence on fragile reassurance."

Shen Yichen finally looked at him fully.

"And what do you call losing someone completely?" he asked quietly.

No answer came.

Because that had already happened once.

Shen Yichen turned back to Lin Yue.

Their distance was minimal again.

His voice softened slightly.

"Don't disappear even in front of me," he said quietly.

A pause.

"Because I don't know how to bring you back twice."

Silence settled again.

And Lin Yue realized—

he wasn't just afraid of separation anymore.

He was afraid of *perceptual loss*.

Even a second of not seeing her as real felt like the beginning of losing her all over again.
