Chapter 7 - The Truth He Refuses to Lose Again

The air inside the estate felt tighter than before.

Not because anything had physically changed.

But because Shen Yichen had.

He stood closer to Lin Yue now.

Not touching.

Not yet.

But no longer distant either.

Like distance itself had stopped being an option.

Lu Han watched him carefully.

This wasn't how memory recovery was supposed to look.

It wasn't clean.

It wasn't linear.

It was emotional distortion.

Shen Yichen spoke again.

"Tell me the rest."

His voice was low.

Controlled—but no longer fully stable.

Lu Han hesitated for the first time.

"That's not how it works."

Shen Yichen's gaze sharpened instantly.

"Then explain it properly."

Silence.

Lin Yue stepped slightly forward.

"Shen Yichen…"

He didn't look away from Lu Han.

But his voice softened a fraction when he answered her.

"Don't interrupt."

That wasn't harsh.

It was protective.

And that made it worse.

Lu Han exhaled slowly.

"Three years ago," he said, "you were going to break your engagement with your family's choice."

Shen Yichen's jaw tightened slightly.

"You were going to choose her permanently," Lu Han continued.

A pause.

"And leave everything behind."

Silence.

Lin Yue felt it again.

The weight of something that didn't survive time.

Shen Yichen spoke quietly.

"…And they erased me instead."

Lu Han didn't deny it.

"Yes."

That word settled heavily.

Shen Yichen's fingers curled slightly.

Not anger.

Something more unstable.

Recognition without full memory.

A shape without clarity.

Then—

another flash.

---

Rain again.

But louder.

Not rooftop this time.

A hospital corridor.

Bright lights.

Too clean.

Too white.

A girl sitting on a bench.

Hands trembling.

Blood on her sleeve.

Shen Yichen standing in front of her.

Frozen.

Not from fear.

From decision.

A man in a suit grabbing his arm behind him.

"Shen Yichen, you're coming back."

The voice sharp.

Commanding.

Family.

Pressure.

And in front of him—

her eyes.

Waiting.

Not asking him to stay.

Just hoping he would.

His hand lifted.

Halfway toward her.

Then stopped.

Because something invisible pulled harder from behind.

And for the first time—

he didn't move forward.

---

Snap back.

Shen Yichen exhaled sharply.

A slight step backward this time.

Lin Yue noticed immediately.

His balance wasn't fully his anymore.

Lu Han noticed too.

"You're forcing it too fast," he said.

But Shen Yichen didn't respond.

His eyes stayed locked on Lin Yue.

Like she was the only stable point left.

His voice came out quieter.

"…I left."

Not a question.

A realization forming too late.

Lin Yue didn't answer.

Because if she confirmed it—

he would break.

Or worse.

He would rebuild it wrong again.

Shen Yichen took a slow step forward.

Closer than before.

Then another.

Not aggressive.

Not controlled either.

Just instinct.

His voice lowered.

"If I left…"

A pause.

"…why do I feel like I never stopped looking for you?"

Silence.

That sentence didn't belong to logic.

It belonged to obsession forming through missing pieces.

Lu Han's expression tightened.

"That's not stable memory," he said quickly.

But Shen Yichen didn't hear him anymore.

His gaze stayed on Lin Yue.

And something inside it finally stopped pretending to be calm.

"You're real," he said softly.

Not confirmation.

Anchor.

Like saying it would stop him from losing her again.

Lin Yue's breath caught slightly.

Because this version of him—

wasn't remembering gently anymore.

He was attaching.

Dangerously.

Shen Yichen's hand lifted slightly.

Not touching her yet.

But close enough that it mattered.

"…I don't care what they erased," he said quietly.

A pause.

"I'm not losing you twice."

And in that moment—

Lu Han understood.

The memory wasn't the problem anymore.

The problem was what Shen Yichen was becoming *because of it*.
