Chapter 9 - Don’t Look at Anyone Else Like That

The air between them had changed.

Not tense anymore.

Dense.

Like every breath had to pass through something unspoken first.

Shen Yichen didn't step back.

Not even slightly.

His eyes stayed on Lin Yue like the rest of the world had already been dismissed.

Lu Han exhaled slowly.

"This is exactly what I meant," he said again, sharper this time.

But Shen Yichen didn't react.

Because Lin Yue had just looked past him.

Just for a second.

Not intentionally.

But enough.

A pause.

A mistake.

Shen Yichen noticed immediately.

His gaze shifted.

Following hers.

To Lu Han.

Something in his expression tightened.

Not anger yet.

Something quieter.

More dangerous.

Lin Yue turned back.

And felt it instantly.

The shift.

Shen Yichen's voice dropped slightly.

"…Why are you looking at him?"

Lin Yue blinked once.

"What?"

He didn't repeat it.

He didn't need to.

His stare had already changed.

Not at Lu Han.

At her.

Lin Yue exhaled softly.

"You're imagining things."

That should've ended it.

It didn't.

Shen Yichen took one step closer.

Now the distance between them disappeared completely.

His voice lowered.

"I don't imagine things."

A pause.

"And I don't like it."

Lin Yue tilted her head slightly.

"Don't like what?"

His gaze flicked briefly—just briefly—back toward Lu Han.

Then returned.

"To see you look at someone else."

Silence.

Even Lu Han went still for a second.

That wasn't rational anymore.

That was instinct speaking without permission.

Lin Yue studied him.

"You don't even know what you're feeling," she said softly.

Shen Yichen didn't deny it.

Instead—

he leaned slightly closer.

Not enough to touch.

But enough that she could feel his presence fully now.

"I know one thing," he said quietly.

Lin Yue didn't move.

"What?"

His voice dropped even lower.

"You don't look at him like that."

A beat.

Lin Yue frowned slightly.

"Like what?"

That was when something shifted again in his eyes.

Not confusion.

Not restraint.

Possession sharpened into clarity.

"…Like he matters."

Silence.

The words weren't loud.

But they hit like they were meant to stay.

Lin Yue's breath caught slightly.

Because that wasn't logic.

That was emotion refusing explanation.

Behind them, Lu Han finally spoke.

"Shen Yichen, you're misreading everything."

Shen Yichen didn't turn.

Didn't acknowledge him.

Only said, coldly:

"I'm not."

Then his gaze dropped back to Lin Yue.

And softened just slightly.

Not in kindness.

In certainty.

"You don't need him," he said quietly.

Lin Yue's heart tightened slightly.

"That's not your decision."

A pause.

Shen Yichen didn't argue.

Instead—

he lifted his hand slowly.

This time, not sudden.

Not instinct.

Intentional.

His fingers stopped just before her wrist.

Not touching.

Waiting.

Like he was testing something in himself.

Then softly:

"I remember one thing clearly now."

Lin Yue didn't move.

"What?"

His eyes stayed on her.

Focused.

Unwavering.

"You're the only thing I didn't let go of on purpose."

Silence dropped instantly.

Even Lu Han froze slightly.

Lin Yue's breath caught again.

Because that wasn't memory talking anymore.

That was identity forming around her.

Shen Yichen lowered his hand slightly.

Still not touching.

But closer now.

"I don't care what they erased," he said quietly.

"I don't care what I lost."

A pause.

His voice softened just a fraction.

"But I know what I want back."

Then—

finally—

his fingers lightly brushed her wrist.

Not gripping.

Not pulling.

Just contact.

Like confirming she was real.

And the moment he did—

he went still.

Because something inside him reacted instantly.

Like recognition without permission.

Lin Yue didn't move away.

Not because she was frozen.

Because she felt it too.

That strange pull.

Not fear.

Not safety.

Something in between.

Shen Yichen exhaled slowly.

"…Found you," he said under his breath.

And this time—

it didn't sound like memory.

It sounded like obsession becoming certainty.
