Chapter 15 - Chapter 15: The Dragon-Slaying Hornet and the Emperor’s Choice

The aftermath of the arena was not marked by cheering, but by a suffocating, collective intake of breath. The sight of the Imperial Roc—the symbol of the Zhao family's celestial right to rule—lying in the dust like a plucked chicken was a sight that many feared would bring the wrath of the heavens.

Prince Zhao Mu collapsed onto his jade platform, his spiritual sea recoiling from the sudden severance of his bond. He looked at Lin Xuan with eyes that held no more arrogance, only a shattered, hollow terror.

"You... you didn't just defeat it," the Prince wheezed, clutching his chest. "You stole its divinity."

"I merely reclaimed energy that was being wasted on a tyrant," Lin Xuan replied, his voice cutting through the silence. He didn't look at the Prince; his gaze was fixed on the high balcony where the Emperor sat.

The Emperor, a man whose presence was like a mountain of unsheathed swords, stood up. The air in the coliseum grew heavy—the pressure of a 9-star Tamer. "Lin Xuan of the Sovereign Sect. You have humiliated the Imperial Family. By the laws of the Centennial, you have won the resource rights. But by the laws of the Empire, you have committed an act of supreme insolence."

The Sovereign Shadows and Lin Feng instantly moved, their hands on their weapons. But Lin Xuan raised a hand, signaling them to stand down.

"Your Majesty," Lin Xuan said, his voice steady. "Insolence is the word the old world uses for progress. If the Empire wants to survive the coming Calamity, it needs a Sovereign, not a Prince who plays with birds."

The Emperor's eyes narrowed. "The Calamity? You speak of the Great Rift?"

"I speak of what lies inside the Rift," Lin Xuan said.

Before the Emperor could respond, the 'Hornet's Sting'—the system reward from the previous mission—materialized in Lin Xuan's spiritual sea. It wasn't a physical item, but a jagged, golden needle of pure concentrated malice.

The Emperor's Gamble

The Emperor stepped off his balcony, walking through the air on invisible stairs of spiritual pressure until he landed ten paces from Lin Xuan. "You talk of the Rift. You talk of Sovereignty. Show me your fourth beast, boy. Show me the 'nothing' that you claim can replace the 'everything' of the Zhao Dynasty."

Lin Xuan smiled. It was a dark, dangerous expression that made Lin Yue and Lin Chen shiver with a mixture of fear and desire from the sidelines.

He didn't reach into a pocket. He reached into his own chest, pulling out a small, golden light that buzzed with the sound of a thousand chainsaws.

"Xiao Jin," Lin Xuan whispered. "The world is too loud. Silence it."

The golden light expanded. It was a hornet, but its wings were made of jagged, serrated light, and its stinger was a needle of pure black void-energy. It didn't hover; it vibrated so fast it seemed to exist in three places at once.

[Trait: 'Sovereign's Needle' — Can pierce any defense, including 9-star Spiritual Shields and Divine Artifacts.]

The Emperor laughed, a booming sound that shook the coliseum. "A bee? You offer a bee against the Dragon of the State?"

"Try your shield, Your Majesty," Lin Xuan challenged.

The Emperor flared his aura, a golden dragon phantom manifesting around him—the 'Imperial Dragon Guard', the ultimate defense of the realm. Even a 9-star attack would take hours to crack it.

The hornet flickered.

There was no explosion. No roar of energy. There was only a tiny, microscopic ping.

The Emperor's eyes widened. A single, hair-thin crack appeared in the center of his golden dragon shield. Then, the crack branched out like a spiderweb. With a sound like shattering glass, the 9-star defense evaporated into sparks.

The hornet sat on the Emperor's throat, its stinger millimeters from his carotid artery.

"One sting, and your spiritual sea collapses," Lin Xuan said, his voice a low, lethal murmur. "The Dragon is dead. The Hornet remains."

The New Order

The Emperor stood perfectly still. He felt the cold, sharp law of destruction pressed against his neck—a power that ignored his rank, his history, and his bloodline.

Slowly, the Emperor began to chuckle. The chuckle turned into a roar of laughter. He raised his hands, signaling his guards to stand down.

"Magnificent," the Emperor whispered, looking at Lin Xuan with a terrifying, newfound respect. "A bug that slays dragons. You are right, Lin Xuan. The old world is dead. If you can pierce my shield, you can pierce the Rift."

The Emperor turned to the stunned crowd. "By Imperial Decree! The Sovereign Sect is hereby granted the status of 'Imperial Protectorate'. Lin Xuan is named the Grand Overseer of Resources. Any clan that opposes him opposes the Throne!"

The crowd went wild, but the cheers were tinged with a deep, primal fear.

The Sovereign's Reward

That night, the Sovereign Sect took over the Prince's private palace. In the central chamber, Lin Xuan sat on a throne of black jade, his four insects resting on the arms and back of the seat.

Lin Feng, Lin Yue, and Lin Chen entered the room. They had shed their combat gear for silk robes that clung to their curves, their eyes burning with the realization of what they had truly become. They weren't just sisters to a genius anymore; they were the consorts of a god.

Lin Yue knelt at his feet, resting her head on his knee. "The Capital is yours, Xuan'er. The Emperor has surrendered without a drop of blood being spilled."

"He didn't surrender to me," Lin Xuan said, his hand tangling in Yue's hair. "He surrendered to the future. He knows that the bugs are coming—the real ones, from the Rift. And I am the only one who speaks their language."

Lin Feng walked up behind him, her hands sliding over his shoulders, her lips pressing against his ear. "So, Grand Overseer... what is the first command of the new era?"

Lin Xuan looked at the Dragon-Slaying Hornet, which was now absorbing the golden fragments of the Emperor's shattered shield.

"My first command?" Lin Xuan's eyes glowed with a violet, absolute light. "Close the doors. I have three sisters who need to be rewarded for their loyalty... and a fifth path that requires a very specific type of 'life-force' to unlock."

As the heavy doors of the palace chamber swung shut, the system chimed one final time for the night.
