Chapter 17 - Chapter 17: The Sovereignty of the Swarm

The closing of the Great Rift did not bring the expected silence. Instead, the air over the Imperial Capital hummed with a new, terrifying frequency. Millions of Glass Locusts, once the vanguard of an alien invasion, now hovered in perfect, geometric formations. They weren't attacking; they were bowing.

Lin Xuan stood on the edge of the palace balcony, his silhouette framed by a sky that had turned a permanent, twilight violet. The Queen of the Endless Swarm—his fifth and final forbidden beast—hovered just inches above his shoulder. Her presence was unlike the others; she didn't radiate heat or shadow, but a sheer, crushing authority that made the soul want to kneel.

Behind him, the three sisters were undergoing a physical metamorphosis.

Lin Yue's skin had taken on a pearlescent sheen, her eyes now mirroring the silver moonlight of the Larva. Lin Feng's hair whipped around her like a storm of wind-blades, and Lin Chen's mind had expanded so far she could hear the heartbeats of every citizen in the city.

"Xuan'er," Lin Yue whispered, her voice sounding as if it were coming from the wind itself. "The synchronization... it's not fading. We can feel the entire city. Every fear, every spark of greed... it's all laid bare."

"That is the burden of the Hive, Sister," Lin Xuan replied, without turning around. "To rule is to know. And to know is to judge."

The Grand Overseer's First Decree

A group of high-ranking generals and the survivors of the noble clans approached the balcony, led by the Emperor. They were ashen-faced, their own high-star beasts whimpering and hiding behind their masters' legs.

"Grand Overseer," the Emperor began, his voice lacking its usual thunder. "The Rift is gone, but these... things... remain. What is to be done with the millions of locusts? They have drained the spiritual reserves of the Capital's treasury."

Lin Xuan turned, and the Queen's gaze fell upon the Emperor. The man staggered back as if struck by a physical blow.

"The locusts are no longer a plague, Your Majesty," Lin Xuan said. "They are the new currency. They have stored the spiritual energy of the old world, and I will redistribute it to those who are worthy."

He gestured to the sky. With a single thought shared with the Queen, the millions of Glass Locusts began to descend. But they didn't attack. They landed on the shoulders of the commoners, the soldiers, and the poor, injecting a refined, purified stream of spiritual essence into their veins.

Across the city, thousands of people who had been "talentless" suddenly felt their spiritual seas ignite.

"You're... you're uplifting the masses?" the Third Prince cried out, appearing from behind his father, his face twisted in horror. "You'll destroy the social order! If everyone is a Tamer, then no one is noble!"

"Exactly," Lin Xuan said. "The era of 'nobility' ended when your Roc hit the dirt. From now on, your rank is determined by your contribution to the Swarm."

The Hidden Path: The Sixth Slot?

As the redistribution continued, the System in Lin Xuan's mind chimed with a sound he hadn't heard before—a deep, resonant bell.

Lin Xuan's eyes narrowed. The system wasn't finished. The Rift hadn't been an accident; it was a beacon.

"Chen'er," Lin Xuan called out.

The youngest sister appeared at his side instantly, her glasses now glowing with data streams. "I see it, Brother. There's a massive energy signature three miles beneath the palace foundations. It's been there for millennia. The Rift wasn't trying to break in... it was trying to wake something up."

Lin Xuan looked at his sisters, then at the Queen.

"Feng'er, take the Sovereign Shadows and secure the palace perimeter. No one enters or leaves. Yue-jie, prepare the ritual of the 'Blood-Ink'—we need to map the ley lines of the entire planet."

"And you?" Lin Yue asked, her hand lingering on his arm, her eyes full of a fierce, protective longing.

"I'm going down," Lin Xuan said, his hand resting on the hilt of a sword he had forged from the Dragon-Slaying Hornet's discarded stingers. "I need to see who really owns this world."

The Shadow in the Deep

As Lin Xuan descended into the hidden catacombs beneath the palace, the four beasts followed him in a silent, lethal procession. The Moon-Glow Larva provided the light, the Shadow-Stalker Ant cleared the traps, the Scarlet Weaver mapped the tunnels with red silk, and the Hornet stood guard.

At the very bottom, in a chamber made of living, pulsing stone, Lin Xuan found it.

It wasn't a beast. It was a sarcophagus made of a material that looked like frozen starlight. Inside, a figure lay in stasis—a man who looked remarkably like Lin Xuan, wearing the robes of a scientist from Earth.

Beside the sarcophagus was a terminal, its screen flickering with ancient, familiar English text:

PROJECT SWARM: PHASE 1 COMPLETE. AWAKEN THE SOVEREIGN.

Lin Xuan froze. His reincarnation wasn't a fluke. His "System" wasn't a gift. It was a set of instructions.

"So," Lin Xuan whispered, a dark, cold smile spreading across his face as he realized the scale of the game he was playing. "I'm not just a Tamer. I'm an experiment."

The Queen of the Swarm landed on the glass of the sarcophagus, her starlight wings shimmering.

Lin Xuan looked back toward the surface, where his sisters awaited him, and then at the face in the glass. The world thought he had saved them from the Rift, but he was only just beginning to realize what he had truly saved them for.

"Let's see who's behind the curtain," Lin Xuan said, his hand pressing against the frozen starlight.
