Chapter 31 - THE BREAKING POINT

It didn't explode at once.

It cracked.

Slowly.

Then all at once.

By the time Lillian—Ayo—walked into the classroom, the atmosphere had already shifted.

Too quiet.

Too watchful.

She felt it immediately.

Eyes followed her.

Conversations paused.

Whispers didn't even try to hide.

She stopped walking.

Just for a second.

Then continued like nothing was wrong.

Owen noticed.

Of course he did.

He stood up halfway from his seat.

"What's going on?" he muttered.

No one answered him directly.

But someone laughed softly at the back.

"Ask Ayo," a voice said.

Lillian froze.

Slowly turned.

"I'm sorry?" she said.

A boy leaned back in his chair.

"You didn't know they're calling you that now?"

Murmurs.

"Ayo messed up the file…"

"Ayo almost ruined the group…"

"She changed everything last minute…"

Each sentence hit.

One after the other.

Lillian's grip tightened on her notebook.

"That's not true," she said.

Her voice was calm.

But tighter than usual.

Bella sat still.

Watching.

Not speaking.

Owen stepped forward.

"Who started this?" he asked sharply.

No one answered.

But all eyes shifted.

Not to Lillian.

To Bella.

Just for a second.

But it was enough.

Lillian saw it.

Her eyes slowly moved toward Bella.

Bella didn't look away immediately.

Then she did.

That was all Lillian needed.

"You said something," Lillian said quietly.

Bella looked up.

"I didn't say anything like that," she replied.

"Like what?" Lillian asked.

Silence.

Bella hesitated.

Wrong move.

"I just said there was a mistake in the file," she added quickly.

"And you let them turn it into this?" Lillian said.

Her voice didn't rise.

But it carried.

The class went completely silent.

Owen looked between them.

"This is not making sense," he said.

Lillian stepped forward.

Her eyes locked on Bella now.

"You changed it," she said.

Gasps.

Bella stood up immediately.

"What?!"

"You changed the file," Lillian repeated.

"That's crazy," Bella snapped.

"Then explain why the same mistake appeared twice," Lillian said.

Bella froze.

Owen's expression changed.

"You knew about the first one," he said slowly.

Bella looked at him.

"I just noticed it," she replied.

"No," Owen said.

"You pointed it out before anyone else even saw it."

Silence.

Bella's breathing became uneven.

"You're turning this on me?" she said.

"I'm asking questions," Owen replied.

Lillian didn't move.

Didn't blink.

"You wanted me to look wrong," she said quietly.

Bella shook her head.

"I wanted to be included!"

That broke out louder than she intended.

The room reacted.

"You two shut me out!" Bella continued.

"You worked together, decided everything, and I was just there!"

"That doesn't justify this," Owen said.

"I didn't ruin anything!" Bella snapped.

"You started it," Lillian said.

That sentence landed harder than shouting.

Bella went silent.

And in that silence—

everything became clear.

Not proven.

But understood.

Owen stepped back slightly.

His expression… disappointed.

"Bella…" he said.

But he didn't finish.

Because there was nothing left to say.

Lillian exhaled slowly.

For the first time—

her calm cracked.

Not loudly.

But visibly.

"I worked for that," she said quietly.

Her voice shook just a little.

"I didn't deserve this."

No one spoke.

She picked up her bag.

Owen stepped forward.

"Lillian—"

She stepped back.

"Don't," she said.

Not angry.

Not shouting.

Just… done.

She turned.

Walked toward the door.

This time—

her steps were faster.

The door opened.

Closed.

And the silence she left behind was heavier than anything that had been said.

Bella stood there.

Still.

Her hands trembling slightly.

She got what she wanted.

Attention.

Reaction.

Control.

But not in the way she imagined.

Owen didn't look at her.

Not anymore.

And for the first time—

Bella realized—

she hadn't just pushed Lillian away.

She might have lost Owen too.
