Chapter 36 - TOO LATE TO CHOOSE ii

The apology didn't happen immediately.

Bella tried twice before she actually went through with it.

The first time, she saw Lillian across the corridor and turned away.

The second time, she followed her… but stopped halfway.

Because saying "sorry" suddenly felt too small for what she had done.

By the third day—

she didn't give herself a choice.

It was after school.

The building was quieter.

The noise reduced to footsteps, distant voices, and the occasional locker shutting.

Lillian was at the back of the school.

The same place.

The one with the trees, the soft wind, the quiet.

Bella saw her from a distance.

Standing alone.

Again.

For a moment—

Bella almost turned back.

She won't listen.

She won't forgive you.

You don't even deserve to talk to her.

But this time—

Bella kept walking.

"Lillian."

Her voice came out lower than she expected.

Lillian didn't turn immediately.

"I know it's you," she said.

That alone made Bella's chest tighten.

Lillian turned slowly.

Her expression was calm.

But not soft.

"What do you want?" she asked.

No anger.

No emotion.

And somehow—

that hurt more.

Bella swallowed.

"I came to apologize," she said.

Silence.

Lillian didn't respond.

Bella stepped closer.

Carefully.

"I know what I did," she continued.

"And I know saying sorry won't fix it."

Lillian folded her arms slightly.

"Then why say it?" she asked.

Bella hesitated.

"Because you deserve to hear it," she replied.

Silence stretched between them.

The wind moved gently.

Leaves shifted.

But neither of them did.

"I was jealous," Bella admitted.

That word hung in the air.

"I didn't like how he looked at you," she added.

"How he chose you… even when I thought—"

She stopped.

Lillian watched her.

Waiting.

"…even when I thought I mattered more," Bella finished.

There it was.

Truth.

Ugly.

Honest.

Lillian's expression didn't change much.

"I didn't plan everything," Bella continued quickly.

"But I didn't stop it either."

Her voice started shaking now.

"I saw it getting worse… and I let it happen."

Silence.

"I'm sorry," she said again.

This time—

it sounded different.

Not forced.

Not defensive.

Just… real.

Lillian looked at her.

Long.

Careful.

Then she said—

"I believe you."

Bella blinked.

She wasn't expecting that.

"But that doesn't change anything," Lillian added.

That hit immediately.

Bella nodded slowly.

"I know," she whispered.

Silence again.

Then Bella took one more step.

"Can we go back?" she asked.

That question carried everything.

Lillian's eyes softened—

just a little.

But then—

she shook her head.

"No."

Simple.

Clear.

Bella felt it.

Like something closing.

"We can't," Lillian continued.

Her voice wasn't harsh.

But it was firm.

"What we had…" she paused,

"…was built on trust."

Silence.

"And you broke that," she finished.

Bella's eyes filled slightly.

"I can fix it," she said quickly.

Lillian shook her head again.

"Some things don't go back," she replied.

That line landed heavily.

"I don't hate you," Lillian added.

Bella looked up.

"But I can't be your best friend again."

There it was.

Not anger.

Not revenge.

Just… truth.

Bella let out a shaky breath.

"So what are we?" she asked.

Lillian paused.

Then said—

"People who used to matter to each other."

That hurt more than anything.

Bella nodded slowly.

Because deep down—

she understood.

Across the field—

Owen stood.

He hadn't planned to watch.

But he had seen Bella walk over.

And he stayed.

Not to interfere.

But to understand.

Now—

he did.

Lillian picked up her bag.

"I hope you do better," she said to Bella.

Not as an insult.

But as something real.

Then she turned.

And walked away.

Bella didn't follow.

This time—

she knew not to.

Later that evening—

Owen walked beside Lillian.

Not too close.

Not too far.

Just… beside her.

"You handled that well," he said.

Lillian didn't look at him.

"I just said the truth," she replied.

Silence.

After a few steps—

Owen spoke again.

"About us…"

Lillian stopped walking.

He stopped too.

"I'm still here," he said.

No pressure.

No rush.

Just… presence.

Lillian looked at him.

"You didn't leave," she said.

"I won't," he replied.

Silence.

Then—

for the first time in a while—

Lillian's expression softened.

Not fully.

But enough.

"We'll take it slow," she said.

Owen nodded.

"I'm not going anywhere."

That time—

she believed him.

Not completely.

But more than before.

Days passed.

Things didn't magically fix.

But they changed.

Lillian and Owen started studying together again.

Not like before.

More careful.

More aware.

But real.

Sometimes they laughed.

Sometimes they argued.

Sometimes they just sat in silence.

And somehow—

that silence felt safe again.

Bella watched from a distance.

Not every day.

But enough.

She saw the way Owen stayed.

The way Lillian allowed it.

And this time—

she didn't interrupt.

She didn't interfere.

She just… watched.

And slowly—

she started sitting alone by choice.

Not because no one wanted her.

But because she needed to understand herself first.

Zainab joined her one afternoon.

"You're quiet these days," she said.

Bella smiled faintly.

"I'm learning," she replied.

Zainab didn't ask what that meant.

Because it showed.

Some things ended.

Some things didn't go back.

But not everything was lost.

Because in the middle of broken friendships and painful truths—

something else started.

Not perfect.

Not easy.

But real.

And sometimes—

that's better than what came before.
