Hayes didn't reply with words. Instead, he leaned down and claimed Euphoria's lips with a slow, deep kiss.
This time, she didn't pull away. She reached up, winding her arms around his neck and leaning into him, her response soft and yielding. It was the spark Hayes needed; his composure shattered, and he kissed her with a sudden, desperate intensity, as if trying to memorize the very soul of her.
After a long moment, he pulled back, his breathing ragged. He looked into her dazed, misty eyes and whispered, "What if we're stuck here forever, Euphoria? What will you do then?"
The question acted like a splash of cold water. The haze in her eyes cleared instantly as the weight of their situation came crashing back. What if there truly is no way out?
Hayes traced the curve of her lip, his voice low and coaxing. "I want to leave too, but we have to face the possibility that this is our life now. So... why wait? Let's become partners."
