MONDAY
7:43 A.M. — CROFT ESTATE
ALLISON'S POV
Allison Croft Calloway had recently developed a habit of arriving at her parents' house with food.
Not because she couldn't cook.
She could cook now.
She had successfully roasted chicken, prepared pasta, and made pancakes that were mostly circular.
But her mother's kitchen remained superior in several important ways.
Specifically, it contained fresh pastries.
And Susanna Croft.
Allison entered the breakfast room carrying a paper bag.
"Good morning!"
Susanna looked up from her tea.
"Good morning, sweetheart."
Allison kissed her cheek.
"I brought croissants."
Susanna smiled.
"That's lovely."
Adrian Croft lowered his newspaper.
"Did you bring enough for everyone?"
Allison looked at him.
"Dad."
"Yes?"
"Do you think I would come here with only one croissant?"
He considered.
"Depends on how hungry you were."
Susanna laughed.
Allison gasped.
"The disrespect in this house."
Adrian smiled.
"Come sit down."
