The path they chose was not the fastest, nor the easiest, but it was the only one that didn't lead them straight into death. The deeper parts of the demon territory were no longer something they could casually pass through, not after the fall of the warlord.
The balance had shifted, and stronger entities would already be on alert, searching for the cause of disturbance. Lee Hyun knew that if they stepped into that zone again, they would not face a single enemy this time, but an entire chain of predators far beyond their current strength.
So instead of forcing their way through, they chose patience, control, and precision, moving along the edges of danger rather than through its heart.
They moved like shadows, hiding their presence, suppressing their aura, avoiding any unnecessary conflict. The journey became slower, more calculated, every step taken with awareness of what could be hiding beyond their sight.
At one point, the land beneath their feet began to crack, heat rising from below as the environment shifted again, the cold air giving way to scorching winds. Before them stood a massive stretch of jagged terrain, glowing faintly from beneath, a region filled with molten cracks and rising smoke.
"The lava mountain range…"
Min Seoah spoke softly, her eyes narrowing as she observed the unstable land ahead.
Lee Hyun looked at it calmly.
"We cross from here."
She glanced at him.
"This is not safer."
He nodded slightly.
"But it's less suicidal than the demon core."
She didn't argue.
They stepped forward. The harsh and suffocating heat hit them immediately, the ground was unstable under their feet as waves of hot air distorted their vision. The sharp contrast from the cold they had been moving through made it harder to adapt, but both of them adjusted quickly, using their energy to regulate their bodies as they moved carefully through the terrain.
The path was dangerous, one wrong step leading into molten cracks or sudden eruptions of heat, but they moved with precision, their coordination now far better than before.
Hours passed like that, slow and intense, until finally the land began to change again. The heat faded and the air cooled. And ahead of them, a vast white expanse appeared.
Snow Island. The moment they stepped onto it, the cold struck them like a physical force, sharp and overwhelming, far beyond normal winter conditions. The wind howled across the land, carrying freezing particles that stung their skin, the ground covered in endless snow that reflected the pale light of the sky.
Min Seoah exhaled slowly, her breath turning visible instantly.
"…This is it."
Lee Hyun looked around. The silence here was different, not empty but watchful.
"Moving further will be dangerous in night. Let's stop here for today."
He said calmly.
"The cold will only get worse."
She nodded, agreeing without hesitation.
They began searching for shelter, their movements slower now as the temperature continued to drop rapidly with the fall of night. After some time, they found it. A cave, partially hidden beneath layers of snow, its entrance narrow but leading deeper underground.
They entered carefully. The cave extended inward, sloping slightly downward, shielding them from the wind outside. After moving a bit deeper, they found a relatively stable area, dry enough to rest, protected enough to survive the night.
"This will do."
Lee Hyun said.
They set up basic precautions, placing small barriers, marking the entrance subtly, ensuring they would not be caught off guard. There was no comfort here, no proper bedding, only the cold ground beneath them.
Min Seoah sat down slowly, her expression slightly stiff as she adjusted.
"…This is uncomfortable."
He glanced at her briefly.
"Yah.. for a queen like you to be sleeping in a place like this.. I can understand."
She shot him a look.
"Very comforting..."
Despite that, she didn't complain further, pulling her coat closer as she leaned back against the cave wall. Time passed quietly. At first, it was manageable. Then, the cold intensified. It didn't come slowly. It dropped sharply.
The kind of cold that seeped into the bones, ignoring external protection, slowly freezing everything from within. Lee Hyun's eyes opened. He immediately felt it.
"This isn't normal…"
Min Seoah also stirred, her body tensing as she hugged herself slightly.
"…It's getting worse."
Their breath turned heavier, their bodies reacting despite their strength. This was not ordinary cold, it carried energy within it, something that suppressed warmth directly.
Lee Hyun thought for a moment, then spoke.
"There's only one way."
She looked at him.
"What?"
He hesitated for a second, then said it plainly.
"If we share body heat..."
Her eyes widened instantly.
"What the hell are you saying?!"
Her voice echoed slightly in the cave, her face turning red despite the freezing temperature.
"Have you lost your mind?!"
He raised his hand slightly.
"Don't misunderstand."
His tone remained calm, serious.
"If we let this continue, it will affect our condition tomorrow. This cold isn't normal. It's draining us slowly."
She froze for a moment. Her expression shifted as she understood.
But still,
"That doesn't mean—"
She stopped mid-sentence, her voice lowering. The wind outside howled louder and the temperature dropped again. She clenched her hands slightly, clearly struggling between embarrassment and logic.
Lee Hyun didn't push further. He simply sat there, waiting. After a few moments of silence, she slowly moved closer.
"…Don't misunderstand this."
Her voice was low, almost hesitant.
"I'm only doing this because of the situation."
He nodded.
"Of course."
She sat beside him, close, closer than before. There was a brief awkward pause. Then she leaned slightly, her shoulder touching his.
"…Don't do anything weird."
He let out a faint breath.
"I won't."
For a moment, both of them stayed stiff, unsure how to act, the closeness unfamiliar, the warmth slowly beginning to spread between them.
Then, he adjusted slightly, wrapping one arm carefully around her to stabilize the position.
She flinched instantly.
"Where are you putting your hand?!"
He looked at her calmly.
"Here works best for balance."
She glared at him, her face burning.
"Don't push your luck."
A faint smile appeared on his lips.
"So I can?"
She froze for a second, realizing what she almost allowed, then turned her face away.
"Idiot…"
But she didn't move away. That alone was answer enough. The warmth slowly began to build between them, pushing back against the freezing cold, their breathing gradually stabilizing as their bodies adapted.
Inside, Lee Hyun sighed slightly in relief.
"Good thing…"
He thought quietly.
"If she refused, I would've had to use the system for a heat source."
A faint smirk crossed his face.
"Guess luck is really on my side."
Min Seoah glanced at him suspiciously.
"…Why are you smiling?"
"Nothing."
He replied calmly.
"…Just thinking we'll survive the night."
She didn't believe him completely. But she didn't question further. Instead, she relaxed slightly. Her head lowering just a bit, resting closer. The distance between them, which once felt awkward, now slowly disappeared, replaced by a quiet comfort neither of them spoke about.
Outside, the storm continued but inside, warmth remained. And somewhere between survival and silence, something else quietly began to grow.
